I’m reading this book about the changing arctic and the author stayed with the Nunamiut people of inland alaska for a while and talked to this high school kid who was like “ugh I hate going to school in the spring I wish I was hunting caribou” and I thought that was charming. you often hear about people who are devoted to preserving their traditional culture and knowledge but it’s rare to hear about someone who’s invested in the old ways out of pure teenage selfishness. school is lame and hunting caribou is awesome

signs at stores? émail? menu ?? instruction ? post online ? caption with andswer to question ? group hand outs ??? street sign ??? no. The Written Word Is The Enemy
#The number of compliments i have gotten for reading a thing
The ability to occasionally Read A Thing will make you a hero in your workplace, especially if it is for example an error message that tells you what you need to do differently, or instructions on unjamming a printer.
how dare you say we put jam in the printer
Ok reblogging this again because story time.
I work in tech, and much of what I do is support sales reps within the company by resolving errors with the software they use.
There is one sales rep who, every single time I send her a message or email with extremely specific instructions that will resolve her issue, does something completely different from what I tell her. Every time. Without fail. It is so glaringly obvious that she has never read even a single word that I have written to her.
So one day, she sends me a message that says little more than "(software) is broken, help"
So I do my standard song and dance of asking her what she's trying to accomplish, and what specifically is stopping her from doing that. And eventually, after much unnecessary back and forth, she tells me there's an error message. I ask her to send me a screenshot of the error message. She does.
The error message basically says, "these two required fields are blank. To resolve this, please fill in these two specific fields, and then click save."
So I take a few deep breaths.
Then I lie to her.
I message her back, saying "hey yeah, for some reason it's not loading that screenshot on my end. Could you type out the full text of the error message for me?"
She does.
I ask her if she still needs help.
She does not respond.
I have similar story from tech support.
Client is reporting that Some Thing Program doesn't work. I ask if there's an error message with further information about what's not working. Client says "no". I go over and ask Client to open Some Thing. Client double-clicks on the icon for Some Thing, it starts to boot, an error message dialog flashes up on screen, Client closes error message before I can read it, Thing closes after the error.
"What did that error message say?" I ask.
"What error message?" asks Client.
I tell Client to open the Some Thing again and then not click anything else. Client opens Some Thing, error message appears, Client clicks it away again.
I tell Client to stand up, step away, and give me physical control of the computer. I open Some Thing, start looking at the error message without closing it, and Client says "You should close that." I tell Client that I am reading the error message. Client is apparently accustomed to treating error messages as a kind of spam email that should be deleted as fast as possible, and gets agitated that I'm reading it.
I read the error message. It tells me what the problem is. I fix the problem. Some Thing works now.
---
Later, I start thinking about how such an error message might perhaps be engineered to be more attention-grabbing and close-resistant as a way of making people read it. It's not important for some random program here, but there are more important systems (medical, etc) where it would be reasonable to demand the user's attention because people's lives depend on paying attention to the error message.
But then people with a perverted intellect would still be thinking about ways to avoid reading the message, like dragging it off edge of screen or hiding it behind another window. So maybe the dialog box could have an always-in-front feature to override other windows, and the alert could use the computer's hardware "beep" functionality that can't be switched off by muting the regular sound system, and keep beeping... shit, I realize I'm reinventing pain, and get philosophical about it.
Story from The Past about My Mum:
She was a computer programmer / analyst, a... Long Time Ago. Called in for a system she'd installed before, the office folk said they kept having problems where it Didn't Work Right (no error, a malfunction)
She investigated, and told them that could only happen if they did 3 specific things in a specific order, which they should not ever do.
So, she asked, did they ever do that?
No! Of course not, was the answer.
So she made a couple of small changes, packed up and said that should be fine, but they should call her if there were problems.
The next week
She had a call saying "We're getting a strange error message on the system, can you help?"
She said, of course, can they tell her the error?
And the message was:
"You Said You Didn't Do This"

every time someone realizes they dont have to pick between being a boy or a girl an angel gets its wings btw. and also extremely loud cheering can be heard in the distance from me specifically
btw if you've ever wondered why i make posts like this and get really obnoxious about nonbinary positivity. this is why
and for all of yall that are still figuring it out or aren't getting the support you deserve:
@this-is-nonbinary-joy
That one tumblr post about supine vs prone constantly haunts me. I’ll be reading a fic that’s like:
[character a] pushes [character b] onto his back, then straddles his prone body
meanwhile I’m reading like: he’s not lying on his pronis, he’s lying on his s(u)pine…
sleeve tattoo
potentially controversial but i don't think "male sexuality is inherently predatory (and so if you don't want to be predatory, you're probably a girl) is a winning feminist take. i actually think it's exactly the opposite and we should really be avoiding the implication that predatory misogynistic behavior is biological and not social in nature

TERFs, on a fundamental and very literal level, genuinely don't think (cis perisex) women can ever do anything wrong. You can clearly see this in how they talk about cis men and trans women: they say "men" are, essentially, biologically wired and socially encouraged to be sexually violent predators towards "women," who are apparently never encouraged to be sexually violent in any way, and that's one of their many reasons as to why they think trans women aren't women, because "real women can't be [sexual predators.]" When confronted with the fact that this obviously false to any normal person, they say, "It's not possible for women to rape men because men hold such an overwhelming amount of privilege over women that a woman sexually assaulting a man wouldn't be nearly as traumatizing as the inverse situation, so it's not comparable to call both of those situations by the same word. Also men are basically robots who don't feel pain anyway, and if they did, they'd deserve it lol."
... HOWEVER, when a gay trans man dates a cis man, they immediately drop their whole "women are precious little angels who can do no wrong" act. Suddenly it becomes "You're a predatory homophobic woman forcing gay men to have sex with a female," even though they claim women can't be rapists and the feelings of men don't even matter because they deserve to be hurt for being male. And that's kind of my whole problem with the idea that "TERFs love trans men/TERFs only hate trans women," because when you really analyze it, you notice they just... don't treat us and talk about us the same way they talk about fellow cis perisex women. Everything that applies to "women" doesn't apply to us when they want to villanize and misgender us. They claim that they love us because they feel they have some inherent kinship with us, but when it comes to trans men and cis men, TERFs will always side with cis men no matter what.
TERFs do not love trans men, just like abusers don't love their victims. They "love" the idea of being able to force us to detransition so we can be "normal women" again. If someone loves the idea of trans men detransitioning back into a cis perisex woman, then they don't love trans men: they only love cis perisex women.
For years, the online landscape has been dedicated to demonizing and fearmongering around T and other forms of masculinizing gender-affirming care. "You'll go bald! You'll start to get stinky! You'll be so fucking ugly I won't be able to even look at you. You will get aggressive, even violent for no reason. You'll get unrelentingly horny and will be a threat to those around you. Your disgusting T cooties will contaminate trans women if you touch them days after using T. You'll become obese (and therefore ugly because fat people can't ever, ever be attractive). You'll be hairy and stinky and gross. Your breasts are the most important, most beautiful thing about you and if you have top surgery, you'll just be an ugly zippertits. If you get bottom surgery you'll have an ugly mutilated micropenis. (You are AFAB, and therefore you are public property, and therefore the only thing about your body is that it's attractive to others, not if you are happy with it. You are just an object to be ogled.)"
And now, mysteriously, those some people who spent years handwringing about ugly t-boys are confused that a lot of trans men are suddenly not all that interested in transitioning. "Are you even trans at all? Why are you clinging to womanhood so hard?!" they cry, also conveniently ignoring the acceptance movements around people who choose not to transition (those are only for trans women, see, not UGLY BIRTHDAY BOYS!) If they aren't transitioning, they must not want to be seen as men. They must want to cling to womanhood so they can keep victimhood status! And that's wrong! They're basically claiming to be more of a woman than trans women!
My sibling in Blahaj, you did this. You spent years demonizing anything adjacent to masculinity as the root of all evil. "Masculinity is a prison!" you cried for years. You can't actually be confused that your actions have scared a lot of transmascs out of transitioning. Or did you hope they would transition anyway so you could ridicule them, and what you're actually angry about is a reduction in potential targets for bullying?
one simply must not underestimate the amount of intense transandrophobia that comes from self-identified TMEs & other trans men. & one must not underestimate the amount of people that would be considered "TMA" and trans women who get treated like shit for calling out anti-transmasculinity.
this is why the problem of anti-transmasculinity in trans spaces is not as simple as "non-transmascs need to stop talking over transmascs on transmasc experiences" because while yes that is true! the real problem is anti-transmasculinity as something we all internalize. our goal should be collective healing through unlearning anti-transmasculinity, so we can treat each other better and be more effective in resisting oppression, not treating different trans groups as warring factions.
(additionally there are people who don't identify as transmasculine who are still affected by anti-transmasculinity, or who otherwise contribute in valuable ways to the discussion on it; "talking over" does not mean "talking at all.")
Introducing a new promotion that will be available to both adults and children at its restaurants nationwide, 24-hour diner chain Denny’s announced this week that free pancakes would be provided to customers who take their fighting outside. “We know our customers love coming to Denny’s to participate in violent late-night brawls, and now those guests will be treated to a complimentary short stack as a thank-you for moving the bloodshed out of the restaurant and into the parking lot,” said company spokesperson Tricia Kim, who added that patrons watching the melee from inside a participating Denny’s location were welcome to bang the windows and yell “Fight! Fight! Fight!” in encouragement.

and why he oulka dots

I think sometimes ya'll forget that intersex people can be born with JUST penises as their genitalia. 😭
Like, don't misconstrue me!! Intersex trans women who were born with vulvas &/or ambiguous genitalia are beautiful and wonderful and absolutely deserve to be listened to!!! Their genitalia does not make them any less or more of a trans woman!
But if your first thought when you hear "intersex trans woman" is a trans woman born with a vulva or ambiguous genitals, then I NEED you to reevaluate your view of the intersection of intersexuality and trans womanhood!!!
