barbary macaques are one of two species who exhibit "Triadic interactions". 2 males will sit with a baby, and "babysit", using it as a social mediator to establish friendly social contact, which helps with strenghtening bonds in the social hierachy! younger males do this, sometimes combined with friendly teeth chattering, in order to climb the social hierachy. the baby also benefits, enjoying the attention provided!
