good job everyone! let's keep going!
Sometimes I wonder how much greek mythology discourse or even general mythology discourse could've been avoided if people just made it clearer that mythology isn't just a big monolith and instead a lot of different interpretations and sources
I think a good part of the problem stems from the fact that every version of any given myth is portrayed as the "one and only true version" instead of part of a discourse that was just taking place a very long time ago.
If people learned from earlier on that e.g. the greek and roman gods were worshipped differently across time (or even in different parts of any given country), and that this was often influenced by the cultural ideas of any given city, then it would be clear that there is no "one true version" of any myth. Instead there are (and were back then) versions of the gods that appealed to certain groups, and liking/disliking any version of them isn't a problem at all. The problem is being a dick about it, really.
You like Dionysus as a young party boi? sure go ahead. You like Aphrodite the way she was predominantly worshipped in Sparta and Kythera, where she wasn't only the goddess of love and beauty, but had a major connotation of war? Go ham.
But don't be mean to people who like middle age man Dionysus, or Aphrodite Pandemos or Urania, even if they are not "the original version" according to what you learned in school.
Disagreeing is fine, policing other's likes is not.
"Only people who have been discriminated against can really know how much it hurts. Each person feels the pain in his own way, each has his own scars."
Oshima in "Kafka on the Shore" by Haruki Murakami (2002), Vintage Ed. 2005, p. 207
I'm reminded of a Spanish witticism, when two and a half centuries ago the French built the first madhouse: "They locked up all their fools in a special building to reassure themselves that they're the sane ones."
Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Bobok (1873)
"When will it no longer be necessary to attach special weight to the word 'woman' and to raise it specially?"

An impossible thing to imagine, what might happen if my husband ever paused and thought about the governing law of his own starry universe: his wife might as well have been a farm dog for all the rights she had. Even the sweetest, stupidest man can grow cruel and cunning when he learns a thing like that.
