Wait no actually come on this Rozanov twins separated at birth journey with me.
So Irina falls pregnant again. This is already a disaster. She didn't want to bring another child into this situation. But she can't bring herself to end the pregnancy either. She needs someone, anyone in the house to be on her side. She's so desperately lonely. So she keeps it.
But then at one of her scans she learns it's twins and dreads the life that she'd have if she came home from the hospital with two babies. Grigory is already so jealous of Alexei and the new unborn baby, she knows he would be vile if there was another child to take her attention. Desperate, she finds an organisation willing to discreetly help her put one of her babies up for adoption. (Idk how she keeps it from Grigory yet, just go with it â he doesn't know).
She gives birth, and has to make the impossible choice. She keeps Ilya, and without Grigory or Alexei or Ilya ever knowing about the other baby, she gives him away.
Fast forward 30 years or so, secret Rozanov twin (let's call him Daniel) is living his best comfortable, openly queer life with a warm and supportive mum and dad in England (because it's always fun to imagine Connor doing even more accent work). He's a dancer, is managing to get pretty good work on the West End, life is good. He knows he's adopted, but he's long since abandoned any hope of finding his birth family. There's just no trace of them anywhere. He gave up looking for them years ago.
That is, until he gets cast in the same show as A-list actress Rose Landry. He's really not expecting her to pay attention to him â the really big stars usually keep to themselves â but as they're introduced she looks at him and is like "Holy shit. Has anyone ever told you that you look just like Ilya Rozanov?"
And Daniel is so thrown by this that he's just like "Who the fuck is that when he's at home?"
Everyone holds their breath, expecting Rose to be offended, but she just laughs.
"Oh shit, I forgot that you aren't that big on hockey here. He's a friend of mine, a professional hockey player. And I swear to god you look identical to him. It's actually crazy."
She types a quick Google search and shows him a picture and when she turns the screen to him to show him, Daniel literally gasps because she wasn't fucking joking. It's like looking in a very slightly warped mirror. He's bigger, and there's something harder about his face, but those eyes, those lips, the nose â they're all just like his.
"Holy shit," he says, taking the phone from her to get a better look. And Rose nods like 'Yeah, see what I mean?' as she pulls him aside, out of earshot of the rest of the cast.
Daniel's heart is racing as he looks up at her again. It's impossible, it's probably nothing, but at the same time they have the same fucking face. He can't just laugh it away. And the name. Rozanov. A Russian name. The coincidences are just too crazy.
"Would you believe me if I told you I was adopted?" He asks and Rose's eyebrows shoot up.
"How long ago?"
Rose's eyebrows climb still higher.
"From here?"
"From Russia."
"Holy shit."
"Holy shit," Daniel agrees.
"Well that does it. You're coming to my hotel room tonight. I think we're going to need wine for the rest of this conversation."
And he doesn't think he needs to, but his body feels so disconnected from his head that he finds himself saying without thinking, "Just for the record, I'm gay. So I don't..."
And to his relief Rose grins.
"When you come over later, I'll explain how funny it is that you told me that in the light of this conversation."
went on vacation and did not read as much as normally. Here you go with some old reads, some new, all worthy. As always, more vibes than specific topic, everything is hollanov unless stated otherwise, check the tags inside, etc. Enjoy!

Winner's Curse by Cecily_v, liminalmemories (e, 60k, centaurs first year)
How this fic shows Shane on that first year defaulting to Hollander and how it works from Ilya's POV is so so so well done that I basically forced myself to pace the reading because I really did not want it to end. The team, their communication, the relationship with everyone and how you can see that Shane trying to be perfect, to be what he thinks heâs supposed to be is consuming them both (and the incredible landing of the end) makes this my fav first year with the centaurs fic right now. Simply a delightful read if you love to suffer and be rewarded by it in the end (it is my case).
free rein by eleadore (e, 18k, undernegotiated cnc during situationship)
this fic changed my brain chemistry the first time I clicked on it. I think it was the first or one of the first cnc I read for them and it really hits the spot of undernegotiated kink, extremely hot, and a writing that honestly made me want to eat my phone (very positive). Just. Click the link and lose your mind with me.
To have and to hold by Sirens_Scales (e, 4k, first night married smut, commitment kink)
Sometimes you need mushy lovely hot newlywed hollanov smut and sometimes you are so lucky to get it. All hail ao3. The dialogues are quick and funny and the smut just sent me to the stratosphere.
[REDACTED] by CorvidCordelia (e, 33k, Red for Hunt October AU)
Walk with me and with the writer on this one. Watched this movie last year for the first time and I already thought there was PLENTY yaoi potential in it, and the fact that someone did this for hollanov made me jump over my usually non-interest for full-AUs and boy I am happy I did it. Feral about them together honestly.
911, Jackie speaking (t, 6,5k, outsider pov after Ilya takes a hit)
Outsider POV are very satisfying when they land the feelings and they nail the characterization and how this one builds Jackie does both things terribly well.
"'We could only have one child,'' David said quietly. "We thought about adopting, but we decided in the end to just focus on making Shane the best person we could. I think we did an okay job of it.
Ilya smiled at the understatement.
"We couldn't be prouder of the man he's become,' David continued. "I don't have any Stanley Cup rings, but I have Shane.''
Chapter 39, The Long Game
....
It's Christmas of 1988.
There's one more present under the tree, and Yuna's eyes are dancing as she hands it to David. He opens it to find the tiniest pair of shoes he's ever seen.
"No. Really?" He's dizzy.
"Really," Yuna grins, and her eyes are shining with tears, and David loves that face more than anything. He hopes their baby looks just like her.
.....
It's a bitterly cold day in February of 1989 when David puts the shoes away. He pushes down all the anger of it's not fair, why us, why our baby. Yuna needs him.
The doctor had said you're young, you can try again.
.....
In the spring of 1990 the flowers are blooming to life and Yuna's belly is starting to look rounder. David looks around the empty bedroom in their Ottawa house and thinks green might be nice, something that works for a boy or a girl, a nice cheerful shade. Next week he'll buy the paint.
The call from the hospital comes before he gets the chance. When he looks at the doctor's scrubs he thinks green is the ugliest colour on earth.
.....
They don't talk about it. Not when the leaves are changing colour and the nurse offers them congratulations. Not at Christmas or New Year's as they turn the calendar over to 1991. It's Valentines Day before David gets the courage to touch the rounded swell of his wife's body and he cries when whoever is inside touches him back. It doesn't matter that they don't have a name or a face yet, he loves them so much it hurts.
.....
On a Friday morning in May, David holds his son for the first time. His face is scrunched and blotchy red and angry. He's the most perfect thing anyone has ever laid eyes on.
He watches Yuna sing and rock him near the nursery window at home, her face glowing. He thinks the yellow paint was definitely the right choice for their sunshine, their only sunshine.
.....
Shane is a chubby baby (they laugh themselves sick when the baby shoes don't even fit on his fat little biscuit feet) but by the time he turns two he has leaned out into a little boy, they think maybe they are ready to try again. David imagines a girl this time, introducing Shane to his baby sister. Melissa sounds pretty. The baby name book had said it meant honeybee and doesn't that just fit perfectly amidst sunshine and flowers and springtime?
.....
It never happens.
Shane is an only child at four and five and six and he's becoming something special on the ice, all the coaches say so. David thinks that they have no idea what they're talking about when they say that because Shane Hollander has always been special from the time he kicked and rolled inside his mother, before he ever knew what cold was.
If he's all they get, they will make sure he knows he is everything.
.....
Sometimes David wants to take Shane by the shoulders and apologize to him for making him think he has to be everything. You don't have to try so hard to be perfect for us, he wants to say. You're perfect to us because you're you, you're ours, don't you know how we prayed and hoped and waited just for you to exist, don't you know that's enough?
Much, much later as he waves to him (to them) in late evening sunshine, he sees Shane relax behind the windshield with a loving hand on the back of his neck. David feels something inside of him loosen.
.....
On Shaneâs wedding day, David embraces both his sons and dances with his wife and my god, if this is all he ever gets in life, no man has ever been so lucky.
.....
"Are you ready?" Shane is smiling and his eyes are shiny. Ilya looks much the same.
David is dizzy. But he nods and holds his hands out. Shane places the baby in his arms and oh, she's so tiny. He forgot how tiny they start out.
Her little knit hat is yellow.
"Hey there, honeybee," he murmurs, and his voice is foggy with unshed tears. "I'm your grandpa."

After six months with Winner's Curse (which I love! and I'm glad we figured out!) @liminalmemories21 and I promised each other: short! sweet! Uncomplicated!
And then there were outlines and thoughts and feelings and y'all. Y'ALL. All I want is this:
"I'm bringing it home to Boston." Shane juts out his chin, Harvard toque pulled down over his ears.
Ilya laughs, pokes himself in the chest, right in the middle of the BU. "No, I'm bringing it home to Boston."
Shitty wraps his arms around both of them and shouts, "PROVIDENCE, BABY."
Notes for the uninitiated: wip amnesty was an event where people would share their wip's with no obligation to finish. they're posted as-is and with the understanding that this is their final form. i started writing this in december 2024 and stopped writing it in february/march 2025. currently, i will not be writing more in this single dad tommy universe.
---
Summary:
The weird and fraught but eventually great adventures of single dad Tommy Kinard.
Excerpt:
"I need toâwe need to talk," Tommy says.Â
"Oh," Catie says. "Yeah. Sounds serious." She nods. "We should talk."Â
And Tommy sits them down on the couch, holds her hands, and takes a deep breath. He looks into her eyes and says: "Catie, I'm gay. I'm so sorry."
Her hands are limp in his, not even a flinch. They just get colder. She stares at him, in shock but⌠maybe not as much as he imagined. It should make him feel great (it does not).Â
"Tommy, I'm pregnant," she says.Â
Neither of them make a move.

Gets his first inkling of what Shane deciding to not care looks like the next morning when they park and Shane shifts his bag to his other shoulder so he can reach for Ilyaâs hand as they walk in. Stares at it for a beat too long, and Shane waggles it impatiently until he takes it, threads their fingers together and continues their conversation from the car about the new Raiderâs left winger and his tendency to telegraph when heâs going to deke left and if thatâs a weakness they can exploit, like he hasnât shifted Ilyaâs world on its axis.
Spends all of practice waiting for the other shoe to drop, but Shane is utterly normal. Chirps him on the scrimmage line, gloats when his line wins, makes a face at the gatorade Ilya takes from the fridge â âYou donât love me anymore?â
He almost drops the gatorade in shock. âWhat?â
Shane nods at the bottle in his hand. âYou know that strawberry is empirically the worst flavor, right?â closes the gap between them, whispers in his ear, âDo you not want me to kiss you?â
He is still staring at Shane while the locker room devolves into a debate about how to rank the flavors of gatorade.
Tunes back in when he hears Z say, âPoint of order.â
âChrist, not you too?â he bemoans to the air.
Dykstra says seriously, âWe failed in our duty as parents.â He snorts.
Waves a hand at Z. âYes? You had a comment?â
âActually, pedialyte is superior to gatorade, and the tropical fruit flavor slaps.â
Which is sufficiently heretical to stop all conversation in the room for a solid 30 seconds, before Holmberg manages to regroup enough to explain to Z why heâs wrong in extreme detail.
Harris waylays them all as theyâre getting ready for practice the next day. âSocial media time,â he announces. âNew challenge for you. Who can open velcro the fastest and quietist.â
Shane gives him a sidelong look under his lashes. âIlya canât do anything quietly.â
Holmberg hoots and Bood gives him a startled look, and looks at Ilya to see if he read that right. Ilya gives him a small nod, and Bood grins. âSo, when I room next to you, youâre saying Ilyaâs calling out his own name?â
Shane flushes, leaning down to stuff something into his bag so he doesnât have to look at the others, but doesnât shut down the laughter or leave the room.

In hindsight, talking to Hunter about it feels prophetic in the worst way. Like he manifested every nightmare heâs had in the last five years, every worry thatâs kept him awake at night this season.
He sees Shane get boarded, sees him break loose, kick the puck free, and then he sees him go down. Doesnât actually realize what happened until he watches replay footage later. Shane broke free, kicked the puck loose, and Minnesotaâs veteran defenseman tangled his stick with Shaneâs skates. He went down hard. He doesnât get back up.
Game play stops. Ilya feels like his heart stops.
It doesnât start again until Shane moves, tries to push himself up and canât.
Hops the boards without really realizing heâs moving. Â No one stops him. âShane.â Â Shaneâs eyes are focusing. Heâs trying to sit up. This isnât like last time.
âIâm okay.â Â He drops to one knee and strips off his glove to reach for Shaneâs hand. âIlya, Iâm fine. I swear.â
âStay down, wait for the medics.â
Shane rolls his eyes. âJust help me up. Iâm fine.â
âShane.â
Shane looks over his shoulder. âHaas, help me up?â
He twists to glance behind him. Â Haas and Chouinard are hovering, keeping the space around them clear. Â Haas looks concerned, but also amused. âYeah, no, Iâm gonna go with Cap on this one. Letâs wait for the medics. You went down pretty hard.â
âTraitor,â Shane mutters, but by then the medics are there. They say thereâs probably no concussion, but they want to err on the side of caution. And either way he definitely needs x-rays before they let him back on the ice.
Shane gives in with ill grace, but fast enough that Ilya thinks heâs probably hurting more than he lets on.
Itâs not like last time. He gets to escort Shane off the ice. Gets to hear the prognosis. Gets to hold his hand. Gets to feel the solid reassurance of Shaneâs silicone wedding band.
I don't know how to explain this. @liminalmemories21 and I have been friends for <ahem> a long time. Our story is complicated and involves livejournal (mine), international travel (mine), and an ex (mine) before we had an IRL friendship based around food. And then I moved. Far, far away, and suddenly we just had fanfic.
So if you ever wonder how you stay friends with someone over distance and time? It's fanfic.
Our journey, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (January 2009), began with Merlin. Like it does. We have... over 50k of a story written that will never see the light of day. We wrote it because -- we love each other. And Edinburgh. And there was not a lot that you could do together in 2009 over a continent other than write? So we wrote. A lot.
So, here you go. Our origin story. Chapter 1 of a story that will never fully see the light of day but that exists in our google docs and kept us close enough together until Buck and Tommy's fateful kiss.
This is a love story. It's just maybe not Merlin and Arthur's love story.

University of Edinburgh Academic AU
Chapter One
In which Merlin is lost, Arthur doesnât study, Gwen is mentioned tangentially and Morgana doesnât appear at all
Arthur was studying. Or rather, he was trying to study but somebody was making a hell of a racket outside. He was annoyed by this since heâd specifically set aside this evening to study for his Theories of Political Thought midterm. It wasnât precisely that he didnât want to admit that he studied, it was just that the mystique of being effortlessly brilliant tended to take a hit when people actually saw you making note cards and quizzing yourself.
He was manfully ignoring the increasingly distressed noises coming from outside, it was no business of his if someone had gotten a little too pissed and wandered out to Arthurâs Seat in the fog. If he went out to rescue every drunken fresher who got lost on Arthurâs Seat heâd never get anything done. Besides, it was only October and not that cold out. Whoever it was would spend a marginally unpleasant night outside, and then wander back home in the morning with a bad cold at the most. Hopefully theyâd learn something from the experience, although having been a drunken fresher all too recently Arthur wouldnât have put any serious money on that outcome.
Heâd just refocused his attention on the impact of Hobbes on Lockeâs emerging political ethic when there was a startled shriek, a loud thump and then the sounds of some really inspired swearing. Arthur was impressed despite himself with the variety of curses the mysterious stranger in his garden had at his command, and resigned himself to going out to see what was going on.  He flipped on the outside lights and flung open the door prepared to give whoever it was a proper bollocking for disturbing the peace, but found himself arrested by the scene presented to him.
In one corner there was a very large, very handsome horse calmly munching on his motherâs rose bushes. In front of him was a tangle of fabric and sticks that was flailing in a curious way, and he supposed was the perpetrator of the inventive swearing. Arthur watched fascinated as the tangle of cloth resolved itself into a tall, gangly man with untidy black hair wearing an outlandish tattered cloak and what appeared to be a headdress made of twigs.
Arthur cleared his throat to get the manâs attention, and then cleared it again more emphatically when it failed to garner the appropriate reaction the first time. The man on the ground glared up at him balefully, âWhat?â
âWho are you, and why is your horse eating my roses?â
The man turned his head to stare at the horse, then turned back to Arthur, âIâve no idea why that hell beast does anything.âÂ
When he made no move to get up and dissuade the horse from denuding the roses, Arthur sighed irritably and marched down the front walk to yank the horse out of range of the roses and tie him up where he couldnât do any damage. He walked over to loom over the man on the ground and asked again, âAnd who the hell are you?â
The man grinned suddenly, âIâm Herne the Hunter.â
Arthur blinked, âCome again?â
He gestured vaguely, âHerne the Hunter, Elizabethan conceptualization of the Celtic deity Cernunnos,â he paused then added, âor possibly of the Anglo-Saxon god Woden. It depends on which poorly researched popular theory you buy into.â
Arthur raised an eyebrow, âYou expect me to believe that the leader of the Wild Hunt canât manage to stay on his own horse?â
Herne, for lack of a better name, looked annoyed, âObviously Iâm not actually Herne the Hunter.âÂ
Arthur barely managed to stop himself from saying, âNo, really?â Although judging from the frown the man on the ground gave him, he hadnât managed to keep the expression off his face.
âLook, I donât suppose youâd like to give me a hand up?â
Arthur considered the idea, âIf I do will you tell me why youâre riding around Arthurâs Seat dressed up like a reject from a low budget medieval reenactment?â
The man on the ground looked put upon, âOnly if you make me tea.â Arthurâs must have looked as incredulous as he felt, because the man added, âIâm cold and wet and itâs going to take a while to explain, and anyway I need to call someone to come get me and I donât know how long itâll take them to get here so you might as well make me tea.â
Arthur mentally wrote off the evening and stretched out a hand, âFine, but you have to actually tell me your name, Iâm not going to keep calling you Herne.â
The man hauled himself up with Arthurâs help, disentangled himself from the cloak and kicked the twiggy headdress away venomously, revealing himself to be wearing perfectly ordinary jeans and an atrocious sweater with an even more atrocious scarf. âMerlin.â
Arthur blinked, âBeg pardon?â
âMerlin. You asked my name.â
Arthur could feel his eyebrows rising, âYour actual name is Merlin?â The man nodded. âDid your parents hate you?â
âI donât think anyone named Arthur Pendragon who lives in a house overlooking Arthurâs Seat should really be throwing stones.â Merlin said waspishly, âBesides, itâs an old family name.â
Arthur conceded the point, not terribly surprised that heâd been identified. It wasnât as if he went out of his way to be inconspicuous on campus. Heâd given up on that idea about a week into his fresher year. The name Pendragon wasnât precisely common and by the second week of term even the dimmest students had worked out that Professor Uther Pendragon, Principal of the University, probably had something to do with the Arthur Pendragon in their history class. Arthur figured if he couldnât blend in, then he should stand out and heâd made it a point since then to be the center around which the student population revolved. This was frequently tedious, but all things considered it was better than any of the alternatives.
Arthur gestured Merlin into his house heâd inherited from his mother, and chose to live in now because it put him as far out of his fatherâs reach as he could get without being really pointed about it, bundled up his notes and set the kettle on to boil. He settled in a chair and pointed, âRight, time for you to sing for your tea.â
Merlin grimaced, âI have this friend Toby,â he paused and scrunched his face up, âwell, friend might be pushing it. We lived together for a highly regrettable six months, and ever since I canât get rid of him. Anyway. Toby belongs to this medieval reenactment group,â Arthur must have looked confused because Merlin waved a hand and explained, âYou know, the idiots who like to dress up in costume and call each other lord and lady and stage tournaments, even though their concept of the Middle Ages has about as much to do with real medieval life as,â he gestured wildly as he looked for a suitably damning comparison.
âAs the average University cafeteria lunch has to do with actual food?â Arthur suggested.
Merlin snapped his finger, âYes, exactly. Anyway, somehow Tobyâs gotten into a feud with one of those strange German fraternities where they duel with swords as part of the initiation.â He paused looking a little confused, âAlso, I think heâs feuding with one of the Wiccan groups on campus, Iâm not really sure why or how, but knowing him it probably has to do with a girl he didnât call.â
The kettle boiled and Arthur got up to make tea, gesturing to Merlin to keep talking. Merlin wrapped his fingers around the hot mug Arthur handed him gratefully and continued, âRight. So Toby comes up with the idea that his club is going to stage a Wild Hunt on All Hallows Eve â down Princes Street, up across the North Bridge and then down the Royal Mile to Holyrood.â
Arthur stared at him, âThatâs mad.â
Merlin sighed, âYes. I know.â
âSo how exactly did you get involved? You donât sound like you belong to this group.â
Merlin looked far more offended than anyone who had been riding around Edinburgh wearing a twig headdress had a right to, âBelong to that bunch of nutters?â
âRight, so you ended up as Herne the Hunter how?â
Merlin look positively martyred, âToby said it was because they wanted to incorporate early Celtic symbolism and music into the ride, and thatâs what I do.â Arthur must have looked confused because Merlin elaborated, âI study early British religions over at the Divinity School. Iâm researching the syncretism between the very early incarnations of the Christian Church and the native Celtic religious systems in contrast to the Anglo-Saxon interpretation of and resistance to conversion.â
Arthur held up a hand before Merlin could start to give him the details of his thesis, âSo, Toby wanted you for research?â
Merlin rolled his eyes, âThatâs what he said, but what he really wanted was the name of my friend whose father is the vet for all the local stables.â
Arthur leaned his chin on his hand, âHow does this lead to you being Herne the Hunter?â
âRight, so everythingâs going to plan until Ben â thatâs the guy who was supposed to lead the pack â breaks his leg falling out of bed. No, donât ask, I have no idea how he managed it. So now they have no Herne, and it looks like theyâre going to have to call the whole thing off.â
âWhy couldnât one of the others have played Herne?â
âBecause nobody else in the group is as tall as Ben, and Herne has to be tall because otherwise nobody can see him, and anyway the cloak was ridiculously too big on everyone else in the group.â
Merlin shot him an incredulous look, âGenerally the point of giving into blackmail is so that nobody finds out what youâre being blackmailed with.â
âFair point. So there you are, dressed up as Herne, leading the Hunt. How do you end up lost a good 2 miles from Holyrood?â
âActually the Hunt started brilliantly. We met up at the far end of Princes Street by Queensferry Road and waited until dusk, lit some torches and rode hell for leather down the middle of the street. It was all going really well until we turned down the Royal Mile. Turns out the Parliament was having an emergency session about something and the guards donât have much of a sense of humor about a bunch of people on horseback screaming like banshees, even if they are just students.â
Merlin shrugged, âSo we split up. We were supposed to meet up at this pub round the other side of the Seat, but then I got lost in the fog, and well you know the story from there.â
Arthur shook his head slowly in admiration, âSo let me see if I have this all. You dressed up as ancient obscure woodland gods, rode screaming down two of the busiest streets in Edinburgh at dusk on Halloween with torches.â
âAnd bagpipes,â Merlin added.
Arthur nodded, âRight of course, with bagpipes.â He paused for effect, âWhat I want to know is, is there video somewhere?â
@cecilyv is leaving out the number of times she kidnapped me to eat french toast, the amount of CSI we watched, and how the only person I talk to more often than her is the person I actually live with. â¤ď¸

As ever, many thanks to @screamletâ for hockey-picking, any hockey mistakes that remain belong to @cecilyvâ and I.
This is the calm before the storm.
Boodâs the one who breaks the silence. âThis season is different isnât it.â
He makes a face at the ceiling. âYes.â
âWeâre getting hit more. The games are rougher.â
âYes.â
âThe refs keep making calls against us.â
âYes.â
Looks over and sees Bood looking at him with exasperation. âTalk to me.â
He looks at the timer and heaves himself out of the ice bath. âIs a conversation we should have with Wiebe too.â And he doesnât want to have to have it twice.
Bood makes a thoughtful noise, but just follows him out of the baths to the showers and then down the hall to Wiebeâs office.
They have all adjusted to the hits, the defensemen do their job, and deliver their own â and to the refs small benefit, they at least are even here and do not call these fouls. Theyâre still adjusting to the refs, but Bood and he do not argue; âhead down on ice,â they tell the locker room. âDo not show frustration. Take frustration out by skating hard, clean hits. We are still winning.â
Heâd hoped that would be enough, to play through it. That they could keep what Crowell had said to themselves, but if Bood is seeing it, bringing it up with his captain, the ways that it is very clearly (and statistically) affecting the team, then they cannot stay silent about it any longer, at least Wiebe and Bood need to know.
Wiebeâs face shutters, and he really really doesnât want to have been wrong about him. Heâd promised Shane.
âThe fuck?â Bood says. âThat why Hollanderââ doesnât even finish the question. âOf course it is. Dumb question. Ignore me.â
He spares him a smile, more focused on Wiebe. Wiebe steeples his fingers. âBoodâs right, thatâs horseshit.â

@cecilyv and I would be remiss if we did not thank @screamlet for the invaluable read through and hockey-picking. Any mistakes are our own; they tried their best.
He and Shane are making dinner, focused on picking apart New Jerseyâs defense, when he answers Farahâs call a day later.
âIâm guessing neither one of you has checked your email this afternoon.â She sounds annoyed, but he doesnât think itâs at them.
He glances at Shane, who shakes his head. Theyâve been enjoying the last free evening theyâre going to have in a while. âNo. Why?â Although heâs clicking over to his email even as he asks the question. Scrolling down the page of spam, news alerts, note from the vet about an appointment for Anya, email from the pest control people for the house, something from Yuna about the foundation. And there it is. Email from Crowell.
He clicks on it, and makes a face.
Shane has also found it on his phone, and is reading it. Heâs tempted to let Shaneâs reactions tell him what he needs to know, but Farah is waiting so he reads it. Skims it and then goes back to read it more slowly, to make sure he is not missing something.
âHe wants a meeting? Tomorrow? We are traveling.â
âHe says at our convenience,â Shane mutters. âCan it be never?â
(You may also notice the chapter numbers fluctuating. Itâs all written; @cecilyv and I are just reconfiguring how we want to break it up.)
The first preseason game is usually a nothing game. Half the time he would barely even play in it, too senior, no need to court injury. But this year is different, and everyone knows it. This year, their stands are filled. He does not kid himself that theyâre here to see him. Theyâre here to see Shane. See what their money bought them. Okay, be more charitable. They are here to see their native son come home, play for the team he rooted for as a child. Maybe also see him skating with his arch rival. Who he married. Itâs a good story.
When the team skates out, one by one, the roar the crowd lets out for Shane is deafening. He ducks his head, and smiles, and waves at them. Ilya looks around. There are scattered pride flags in the stands, and at least one sign that says Ilya âĽď¸ Shane. He grins at them, and makes a mental note to ask Gen to find them and give them merch. Shane will hate it, but it is not as if they are wrong.
Looks up when the screen flashes a shot of the family box. Yuna and David are there, standing with Boodâs wife, and Hazyâs sister and her wife. Lisa is working tonight, remembers Hazy telling them she was mad she would miss the opener, even if it was still just pre-season. They wave at the camera, and then at the ice. Has never had family in the stands who were proud of him before.
They win, which feels like a good omen, even if Chicago had really only sent their newer lines on a shake down cruise, and it is not a real indication of anything. Still, a win for their first game on their own ice is a good omen.
