For people with anxiety about filing taxes, here’s what things that happen when you make a mistake on your tax return:
- it gets corrected
- you get a letter in the mail either asking for some additional information or a letter showing the adjustment
- you pay the amount (there’s options for payment plans too!) or get a refund
Things that do not happen
- you’re “in trouble”
- you are charged with fraud
- you go to jail
I know that most people are probably just joking/exaggerating when they say a mistake on their return means they get thrown in jail but when I worked with the public I always would encounter people who believed that would happen and they would be panicking about it. So I like to put this out there every year because if I can even prevent one person from feeling that way, it’s worth it

This is becoming an actual issue, so please take the time to read if you can.
If you're a bit out of the loop on what's been going down in syscourse recently, the context doesn't really matter that much. What does matter is that there is someone (or multiple people) threatening to dox system accounts, pro and anti alike. It's usually preceded by multiple anon harassment asks, including death / harm / SA threats, and the people threaten to dox the person in question by sending their personal information through anon (address, zipcode, etc).
This is a serious privacy risk. I cannot stress how dangerous this situation is. Someone knowing where you live while simultaneously threatening to kill you can actually get that person arrested. Everything about it is very illegal.
If you receive a doxing threat, do not delete the ask. Click on the three dots in the corner and click "report". Report it as a privacy violation. I also recommend blocking the anonymous user so they can't send you anymore asks. This person (or people) needs to be removed from this community.
If you want to end it at a report and block, that's fine. I don't know much about technology myself, but it might be possible for the police to track the IP address of where these asks are coming from, and hopefully the person can be put behind bars. If anyone knows more about how a process like that would work, if possible, feel free to add it to this thread.
Please share this around for the sake of awareness. I don't care if you're pro or anti. I would like for us to drop the hate long enough that we can deal with this threat together.
