in s12 the writers really saidĀ āweāre gonna make sure that people know that angels and humans can have sex, fall in love, get married, and have kids. also angels can have a male vessel without identifying as male cause itās different for angels. also weāll do market research into deanās sexuality. donāt worry about it though.ā

Mary waits until everyone is out of the room before rounding on him again. āJohn.ā
Something in her tone makes him feel twenty again, caught playing the fool and the last one to know it. āWhat?ā
āWe need to talk about Dean.ā
The old fear comes fast, and John goes hard around it on instinct, already bracing for whatever needs handling.
āWhat happened.ā
āNothing happened. I justāā She lowers her voice. āYou need to stop teasing him about... Castiel.ā
He frowns. Heās been giving them shit about it for weeks, one of the few things thatās started to feel easy between them, like maybe heās finally found his footing in this strange version of his family.
āWhy?ā
āBecause weāre not supposed to point it out.ā
āPoint what out?ā He knows damn well what she means. The look she gives him says she knows he knows, too, but he keeps his face blank on principle.
āJohn.ā
āWhat?ā
āDonāt.ā
He gives it another second before letting the act drop. āFine. That. Didnāt realize we were supposed to ignore it.ā
Her voice drops to a hiss. āCould you say it a little louder?ā
āTheyāre gone.ā
āThatās not the point.ā
āThen what is?ā
āDean doesn't want us to know.ā
He stares at her. āYouāre kidding.ā
āI wish.ā Her expression hardens. āHe does this thing whenever Iām around. Flirts with women, tries to get Cas to flirt with women. Puts on a whole show for my benefit.ā Her jaw sets. āHe doesnāt want me to know.ā
āDid you try talking to him?ā
She gives him a flat look. āAbout the thing heās going out of his way to make sure I donāt know?ā
He sighs. āRight. Forgot who I was talking to. So youād rather go with donāt ask, donāt tell.ā
Her eyes flash, and he feels the old thrill of it, the one that always makes him want to push when he knows damn well he should quit. (That part of her hasnāt changed. Heās just starting to better understand what sets her off.)
āBetter than what you do.ā
āWhich is?ā
āInsult them.ā
He falters. āIām not insulting them. Iām giving them shit.ā Thatās the whole point. You give people shit about the things that are normal, the things nobody has to tiptoe around. āTeasing.ā
āTeasing.ā
Something in the way she says it puts him on guard. āYeah. The doghouse thing. The couch thing.ā He starts counting them off. āLast week I told Cas if he kept disappearing without calling, Dean was gonna put a tracking collar on him. But Dean knows that I know. Thatās⦠thatās what makes it funny.ā
She closes her eyes. āApparently he thinks youāre making jokes.ā
āI am making jokes.ā
āJohn.ā
āI mean, I thought we were all laughing about the same thing. Andāā He gropes for something else in his defense. āCas thought they were funny.ā
āCas doesnāt understand half of them!ā
āWell. He understands ādoghouseā now.ā
She rubs her forehead and sighs. āGiven your history with Dean, he canāt take ribbing like that. Not from you.ā
Okay. That stings. Apparently a guy can turn over a new leaf and still get beaten over the head with the old one.
āOr me,ā she continues, and the miserable set of her mouth takes some of the fight out of him, āwhich is why heās going through all this trouble to hide it.ā
āSee, Iām not sure I believe that. Deanās not subtle.ā
āI know heās not.ā
āCas isnāt subtle either.ā
āI know. Thatās not the point.ā
āSo hereās a crazy thought.ā He gives her an innocent look. āWe could ask them. You know, instead of keeping secrets about the secrets we think theyāre keeping.ā
He knows heās gone too far when she clams up instead of biting back. His mind starts an automatic countdown to the moment she turns on her heel and storms out in an icy wall of silence.
And he could leave it there.
In fact, every instinct he has for self-preservation tells him he should. Instead, he makes the catastrophic decision to keep talking: āLook, maybe you can pretend Dean doesnāt know that you know, but he definitely knows that I know.ā
She turns her head toward him with terrifying slowness. āā¦Why?ā
He drops his gaze to the table and traces a thumb along one of the gouges in the wood. Somebody got sloppy with a knife. Deep cut, too. He wonders who.
John raises his eyebrows, and understanding moves across Maryās face. Color floods her cheeks, and she buries her face in her hands. āOh, my God.ā
āIn my defense, I knocked.ā
āClearly not loud enough!ā
āHey, it was an accident. I didnāt know theyād beāā
āI donāt need details,ā she cuts in tightly, her blue eyes peering at him through the gaps between her fingers. āWhat happened when they saw you?ā
āWhat was I supposed to do?ā
āI donāt know. Leave?ā
āI did leave.ā
āImmediately?ā
He hesitates, and her hands come down so fast he knows heās picked the wrong answer.
āJohn.ā
āWe had a lead.ā
It sounds weak now. At the time, heād been proud of it. Heād spent weeks feeling like an amateur among hunters who made more than a decade of experience look like none at all. Then heād found something useful. A real lead, on his own, and for five minutes heād felt like he knew what he was doing again.
Unfortunately, those five minutes had included opening that door.
āYou walked in on them and started talking about a case?ā
āWe did have a lead!ā
And heād just walked in on something he wouldāve happily clawed his own eyes out to avoid, and the case had been right there: urgent, impersonal, safe.
Any reasonable man wouldāve panic-babbled.
She sighs. āWhat exactly did you say to them?ā
He has to think about it.
Most of those thirty seconds survive only as a mortified blur: his mouth going ninety-to-nothing about the case while the soldier in him steered his body on autopilot. He remembers spotting Casās button-down on the floor, bending to swipe it up, and tossing it in his direction without breaking stride.
āI tossed Cas his shirt and told them to get it together.ā
when another man asks you on a date and youāre a supposedly straight man would you say āsorry man iām straightā or would you say āITS A AA FEDeral inVESTIGATIONā and then trip over a table

I love how dean is fruity even in small details like the movies he references and his literary every friend is gay, every queer person around them always gravitates towards him, and he's always the one to get hit on by other men, this is so funny, genuinely.

I fell asleep last night thinking of a concept episode.
Basically itās just an episode with Jack holding a camera and filming everyoneās daily routines, like a home video. He just follows them around and theyāre just so confused what heās doing and ignores it. He introduces them and is like āhere are my dads :3 and hereās me!!!ā and he turns the camera back to himself, smiling and then he turns the camera back around and theyāre just all smiling at him. And then the episode continues with like minor conflicts like just fighting n stuff. But like the way families interact with each other.
This part is semi lame but like he would definitely capture like a weird destiel moment. Like they accidentally bumped into each other the way they do on romcoms or just a moment of them sitting awkwardly close in silence and Jack records from around a corner and he just giggles and they both just stare at him, and then the camera cuts.
Jack would also record their daily routines and narrate. āCas is always the one up first because he doesnāt need to sleep. Sam wakes up early to do is runs.ā He just holds the camera with Sam walking up the stairs and he pauses. āJack, what are you doing?ā He somewhat laughs but also is confused. āIām making a video of our lives!ā
GOD I HATE THEM I HATE THEM I HATE THEM
I smiled so big writing this. They are everything to me.
Dean remembers having had the thought: "When did he start smiling like that?" on one of many occasions he'd seen Cas smile big -or at least big for Cas - an undeniable flash of teeth that often seemed to be drawn out in spite of himself. A prolonged pun, a pie he could taste, a tv commercial for a local mattress store with an overly themed advertising concept. Dean hadn't been able to recollect the first, but the warmth, he knew, carried through all of them.
Now, Dean suffers with his head in his hands with a new thought: "When did he stop smiling like that?". Cas had made the decision, at some point, to stop being happy, and somehow, Dean hadn't noticed. Cas had wondered what happiness looked like, but Dean could have told him, if he'd asked. It looked like crows feet crinkling, and a mouth twitching up, and a shake of the head, and the shifting light of the tv playing BIG TOP'S BIG LOW PRICES. It looked like safety. It looked like a nerd in a trench coat delighting in a novelty beer mug that said SO WHAT, IT'S MONDAY, even when that makes no goddamn sense as a joke. It looked like Cas. It looked like Cas.
People love to say what is and what should never be is the first supernatural episode that made them fall in love with Dean and is when he became the main character of the show WRONG itās actually dead in the water

TBF, I think sometimes ppl consider Casās communication style too divorced from what is actively happening to him (being hunted, being murdered despite billion years of service, civil war, grief/ptsd, vessel trauma, and an empty deal that hinges on staying āclosed offā in order to stay alive)
#iām not saying s14-15#but ESPECIALLY s14-15#the empty deal is a barrier to emotion and an important one too#and cas got problems i like him messy#but to say heās hopeless is high dollar uncharitable#iām surprised heās as warm and communicative as he is tbh#a huge portion of his arc is he canāt reciprocate or he dies (and you die)#and itās not just the empty deal#thatās a microcosm of his plight for most of his run#the cool thing is: 99% of the times dean both understands and is heartbroken by this#and sometimes what looks like chivalry is angelic enforcement: i.e. you can care about MISSIONS but not individuals#which is how and why he tends to convert things he cares about into to missions#it's a sort or bargaining effect
//
#the empty deal is a barrier to emotion and an important one too#< prev yes !!! SAY THAT#i get frustrations with some of the s14 / 15 stuff i do#but i can't blame cas /too/ much for sticking to old patterns and staying avoidant abt things riiiiight up until the end bc yeah#the empty deal was a huge chain around his neck#sure he could've told dean abt the deal but. hello. this is CAS we're talking abt here. he was NOT going to do that if he could avoid it#(just like how dean really did not want to tell them abt his malak box plan. they are samesies in this way)#cas studies via @angelsdean
