affection is not simply assertion, or overt, flashy gestures.

a dog will lay on you, engage with you, capture your attention as a form of love. but cats, they will gently share space with you, quietly, beautifully. they won't always sleep on top of you but it is the nearness, the closeness, that they practice that is so comforting & kind

if you want to befriend a neighbourhood cat - put some food down a bit away from you, and turn your back. make yourself small, and silent, and let them come to you.

my cat Gin doesn't always sleep on me - she prefers to lean against the bend of my knees if she is closer. but there is a spot in my bed near my head beside my pillow on the side of the bed that is not against the wall that she occupies, this intimate space of "i love you and i will be near you," where she just barely leans against my back or arm and purrs and is warm and soft and she knows i love her and i know she loves me even though we are hardly touching

dogs use attention as a form of love but cats use presence.
