If there is still a will then there is still a way
Summary: Seems like Hades has forgotten who raised the boy. Orpheus finds a way to outsmart the King of the Mine to walk out of hell with Eurydice.
"If you want to walk out of hell, you're gonna have to prove it before gods and men."
And Orpheus wanted nothing more than that, to walk out of hell.
But not hand in hand, not arm in arm, not side by side? How would he know Eurydice's safe? How would he know it isn't a trick to get him off of the King of Shades' back, to steal his lover again?
He walks in front and Eurydice walks in back? That's it? Really?
"Can you do that?" Mister Hermes asked, for what felt like the hundredth time in his lifetime. And it's true, for the most part, he stopped counting all the tales that didn't turn out well.
"We can." Eurydice responded like she always does, only it wasn't like all the other cycles.
Orpheus didn't say anything yet, the gears in his head kept turning, brows knit tight like they always were when he was working on his song.
Eurydice spoke again "Orpheus? We can, right?"
He suddenly gasps as a light goes on inside his head and Eurydice runs to hold him by his shoulders with worry "Orpheus?"
He does the same with her.
"We can, right?" She repeats herself.
In Orpheus' eyes returns a light that hasn't been there in a long time. He beams at his lover, a smile that equals both mischief and fondness.
Aside, Hermes watches them so intensely that he forgets to blink. 'Change,' he thought, 'change is good'
He's brought out of his thoughts when his boy calls out to him, the boy he raised, the boy he dedicated time to showing everything he could show to a mortal child left in a god's care. The boy he taught how to cheat at cards and poker, despite never being able to outplay the God of wit and cunning. The boy Hermes saw finally become a man.
"Do you perhaps... Have a mirror on ya'?"
"Yes! Not a super big one, just- like the size of my head, maybe?"
"I-" Hermes pauses before spawning a mirror into his hand and hands it to Orpheus.
Orpheus keeps his beaming smile as he returns to Eurydice, who looks at him with confusion. "What are you doing?" She asked.
"If I can't turn back to look at you, I'll look at you without turning back." He explained
Eurydice smiles, her expression matching her lover's now. "... Smart."
And suddenly it hits Hermes like a truck.
Maybe they might make it out.
Maybe they might have a chance.
Maybe it will turn out this time.
"Mister Hermes!" Orpheus speaks again, "Thank you..."
Hermes doesn't even realize he's been tearing up until he finds it hard to reply. He blinks away tears, saving them to fall once they walk out of hell safe and sound, and clears his throat.
It's a long road, it's a long walk. But Eurydice had underestimated how long of a walk it was.
Orpheus lifts his arm that holds the mirror after a short period of rest, aiming it to look directly at his beloved. "Hey pretty lady." He chimed.
"Hey stranger," Eurydice jested back. "Are we there yet?"
"Mmmmh" Orpheus looked ahead of them, squinting his eyes. Up in the distance, he could see a tiny dot of white: the outside.
"We are," He said, trying to hide his excitement to not ruin the moment. "We're almost there, my love!"
Everything was going perfectly. Orpheus had seen and conversed with Eurydice and not once did he turn around. He did it. He outsmarted the Gods themselves.
"Well hurry up, I wanna go home!" Hollered Eurydice from behind him. Despite her complaining, her smile was audible through her voice too.
Orpheus laughed. He lifted the mirror a bit higher, just enough to see the group of workers following close behind.
His answer was a chorus of voices, some saying hi back, some laughter and cheering was heard too. Orpheus, ever the musician, could now differentiate all their unique voices from each other. Now, they were all different beautiful instruments playing in unison and harmony, no longer the monotonous sound of machinery that didn't let them have an identity.
The moment got closer and closer. That small dot of light slowly grew into a big ball of warmth that Orpheus could already feel buzzing on his skin.
His steps grew faster without even realizing it, still holding up that mirror. Walking turned into speed-walking, speed-walking into jogging, and jogging into running full-force towards the outside.
Spring had come again, he could feel it. The sunshine burned hotter and hotter on his skin the closer he was. He could already smell the grass, the trees, the flowers of Topside. He heard the birds singing and insects buzzing. Orpheus knew his song would take what's broken and make it whole, put the world back into tune again.
And then he turns around.
And all he sees is Eurydice's face running right after him before being tackled into the soft, grassy, mildewy ground.
Her arms snake around his neck, tucking her face into the crook of his neck and shoulder. Orpheus envelopes her in his arms, holding her so tight that he's afraid she'll disappear into Hadestown if he lets go.
"We made it..." Eurydice's voice cracks though muffled.
"We made it..." Orpheus echoes.
