Send â for a starter where my muse is suffering a high fever but hasnât told anyone.
@carryindabanner
Katherine tucked her handkerchief into her pocket and tried not to waver drunkenly as she padded into their kitchen for some water. âMorning, sweetheart,â she muttered. âSleep good? It was awfully warm last night, wasnât it?â
carryindabannerâ:
Jack watched her with a weary eye as she walked into the kitchen, sheâd been acting off for a few days. âMorninâ sugar.â He pulled his robe tighter around him, their little apartment was drafty as ever.
âIt would be with you hogginâ all thâ blankets. Couldnât even snag a corner from ya.â
âSorry.â Tea. Thatâs what she should be making. Tea to soothe her throat and relieve her aching body. Ah, well.
Blearily, she searched through their kitchen to find their kettle, which seemed to move around depending on the day. Had they not yet found its appropriate shelf? âWant tea?â
âMade some already.â He held up the cup in his hand. ââs in thâ pot if ya want any. Been up for a few hours already. Got a deadline, anâ Sietz is breathinâ down my neck.â
Jack had his a drawing out on his drawimg desk, heâd only taken a break to get caffeine in his veins.
âYou feelinâ alright, ace? Ya look a lilâ pale.â
âOh.â The kettle was already on the stove. Slowly, to appease her aching joints, she grabbed a mug and poured her drink.
Despite the fatigue she was wrapped in, she managed a snicker. âWhen arenât I pale,â she muttered. âItâs hardly a blue moon.â
âI mean more than usual.â True, his wife of only a few months was fair skinned by nature, a striking contrast to his tanned complexion, but this was different.
Jack got up from his spot at the table and crossed over to her, putting the back of his cool hand against her forehead and cheeks with the sort of practice one would have after looking after numerous children like he had at the lodging house.
âKatherine, ya hot.â
âHow very sweet of you.â She brushed his hand away and started preparing a little breakfast. It wasnât much, but it would sustain her. âDid you already eat this morning?â
âNo, I mean ya burning up.â His brow furrowed in concern. âSugar, why donât you go lay back down. Iâm sure we can scrape together enough tâ afford you takinâ a sick day.â
Jack reached for one of her hands. There were so many illnesses going around, he wouldnât risk Katherine catching one of them proper.

good good newsies boys (x)
âHey, letâs run away togetherâ letâs elope.â
@carryindabanner
She snorted, glancing at Jack over her notebook. âVery funny,â she said, flipping through the pages and leaving inky fingerprints on the corners. âDid Race bet you couldnât convince me?â
carryindabannerâ:
He rolled his right shoulder, trying to get the stiffness to leave it, the nightly climb up three floors of ladders certainly didnât help it.
Jack scoffed. âLike either oâ us is able tâ afford a honeymoon. Bet weâd have tâ be at work thâ day after we got married.â
His eyes were set on her, he liked watching her work, seeing the gears in her brain move along with her fingers in her type writer, piecing together hard truths to hopefully expose the less flattering side of their city and make things better.
âIâm serious though, ace. Letâs elope. I mean we is already very good at the fun part oâ marriage. Weâs both adults, with employment. We could do it.â
She looked up at him again with an arched eyebrow. âAre you asking me to marry you?â she asked, only half-joking. Jack found a new way to surprise her every dayâthis must be the dayâs shock.
She smirked. âWhere in New York could we possibly fit all your boys? They wouldnât let us get married if they werenât there to see it.â
âYeah.â He chuckled. âI guess I is askinâ.â
He hadnât thought much beyond asking her. Jack scratched at the back of his neck. He was more concerned on trying to make it happen without her father interfering. Though they were civil, he knew Pulitzer still held out hope that maybe Katherine would get over her infatuation with him.
âDoes that mean you is sayinâ yes?â
âHey, letâs run away togetherâ letâs elope.â

carryindabannerâ:
âNah, justâŚitâs an idea. If we do I donât gotta convince ya father tâ let me. Weâd already be hitched by thâ time ya father would know.â
There was a smirk on his face and a twinkle in his eyes as he leaned back against her windowsill, enjoying the light breeze coming the Manhattan skyline, straight to the fire escape to Katherineâs room.
âI mean as much as I enjoy sneaking in here tâ see ya at night, it do take a lot oâ work.â
âIâm sorry I put you out so much,â she teased. âYou know society girls. Weâre terribly high maintenance.â
It took conscious effort to turn away from the vision in her windowsill and back to her work. Her desk was littered with her notes that she had to whittle down into a storyâor at least the beginnings of a draftâby tomorrow morning. âThree guesses where youâd like to honeymoon.â

"Get away!" Katherine sent a fiery curse down the stone corridor, forcing the platoon of Death Eaters to scatter. It was just like Katherine to try and take on so many of them at once; her Gryffindor husband, wherever he was, had rubbed off on her. She faced the retaliating spells unflinchingly, throwing up a Shield charm and preparing to weather the storm. The spells bounced around the room, hitting the already crumbling walls. "That all you got?"
@withcameraandpen
Jack saw a flash of auburn hair and went bolting into a fire fight, not even thinking twice. He knew his wife. Her voice.
He grabbed her arm, with a loud pop they disapparated, he wasnât going to lose her. Not when heâd already seen to many folks he knew fall.
He stumbled when they apparated into an empty classroom. âHave you gone mental? You they were gonna kill ya! There was at least a dozen there!â

âDo yâknow what type oâ wood the stick up ya fatherâs ass is? Askinâ foâ a friend.â
@carryindabanner
âCome on, Jack!â They had the patio to themselves after an explosive supper, though the timer had been ticking since they first arrived at Chatwold last week. Surely Jack could see it. Surely he knew to behave himselfâwell, tonight proved otherwise very decisively, didnât it?
âHe was goading you! How couldnât you see?â
carryindabannerâ:
âI didnât fall foâ nothinâ! He was actinâ like I canât support a family on my salary! I ainât gonna just lie down anâ let him drag me through thâ mud in front oâ folks!â
Josephâs words had really upset him, but he couldâve grinned and bared it if it hadnât been in front of Katherineâs whole family. It was exactly what Joe had wanted, a reaction.
Not only that but Jack got up and stormed out of the dining room at the end of their shouting match. And yeah, he had Katherineâs mother in his corner, Katie had been a fan of Jack from the beginning, but that didnât take away the sting of his wifeâs father suggesting that he wouldnât be able to keep a kid fed and clothed, not that he and Katherine were looking to have a kid any time soon anyway.
âNo, you wouldnât.â This happened more often than Katherine could stomach. Her father was a lifelong needler, an expert in finding peopleâs weaknesses, but Jackâs was clear as day: his pride.
And that pride would keep him locked in this battle, which was exactly what her father wanted. He wanted to illustrate Jackâs immaturity, and he was doing a damn fine job.
âHave at it, then. Keep fighting him on it. Keep giving him what he wants. Goodnight, Jack.â
Her dismissing him like that didnât help. He reached for her arm. âHey, weâs talkinâ ya canât just walk away! Its almost like you is takinâ his side, yâknow. Ya didnât stand up foâ me at dinner anâ now you is just actinâ as if thâ fact ya fatherâs words hurt me donât mean nothinâ.â
Jack was looking for an argument he could win at this point. He wanted something, anything he could cling on to to prove he was not in the wrong.

âI saw it! Ya act like I couldnât see what he was doinâ!â
He couldnât, in fact, tell that he was just being wound up by the elder Pulitzer. He took the bait every time it was offered. And it usually ended like this.
âAlso, what gives him thâ right tâ talk âbout my income like he ainât thâ one signinâ my checks. Ya father donât play fair, anâ maybe if heâd unclench a lilâ heâd see that it donât matter if I canât afford more than a one bedroom in Brooklyn anâ that you anâ I is content.â
âHe did this all through our engagement, so what makes you think heâd stop when we tied the knot?â
She had held out hope for that, doubtful but growing nonetheless. Her father was getting a little less coarse, but his newfound gentleness did not extend to Jack.
She raked her hands through her hair. âIs it too much to ask not to fall for it?â
âI didnât fall foâ nothinâ! He was actinâ like I canât support a family on my salary! I ainât gonna just lie down anâ let him drag me through thâ mud in front oâ folks!â

In Celebration of Fatherâs Day, ask my muse (or the mun) anything about his/her father.
"It's okay, baby," Katherine murmured to little Teddy Lupin, barely a month old and already an orphan. When Katherine found herself pregnant after Jack's death, Tonks and her mother had gladly taken her in, eager to give support (and gain an extra pair of hands, Tonks always joked). Death's cloak had descended upon the Wizarding World, bringing Tonks and Remus Lupin into its fold after the Battle at Hogwarts. Now she, Teddy, and Andromeda were alone, and Andy had gone to answer the door.
@withcameraandpen
Teddy had been fussy for last few hours, hair a steady shade of pink as he wailed for his mother who wouldnât be coming to sooth him again. Certainly he wasnât having this woman who was trying to offer him comfort.
Jack looked like hell, he felt hollow after all heâd been through and seen, especially that last battle. Hogwarts in ruins, and the dead. All those who were laid out in the great hall, some of them children, and among them was his best friend and her husband. He had her wand, he felt it only right to return it to her mother before going to find Katherine.
carryindabannerâ:
âShe was right. Iâm glad youâve not been alone. Look at you though, Katherine.â He was taking in all he had missed, absorbing it like a sponge.
âA baby. Thatâs the first good thing I heard in weeks. Not since I went deeper into hiding. I couldnât risk it, yâknow. I couldnât leave any trace behind with Ted.â
She nodded. âI know, I understand. I even hoped that was the case when you didnât contact us. Andy wasnât so optimisticâoh, Andy! Sheâll want to know about Tedâs death. If you know anythingâŚbut later.â
Her hands cradled his face. He was thinner, and hollower than she remembered. âIf youâre here,â she said, âyou must have heard. The Battle of Hogwarts. Heâs dead.â
His face was unreadable. âI was there. Itâs over. Itâs really over this time, Katherine. It was awful. And then I didnât see you, and all the bodies in the great hall. You wasnât there neither. And I was so glad.â
Jackâs eyes were watering, he swallowed a lump in his throat, the images still remained crisp in his mindâs eye. âTonks and Lupin-â he started. There was something almost out of body about seeing your best friendâs corpse laid out next her husbandâs. Seeing all those dead who were too young to die. So many students and. âFred Weasley.â

carryindabannerâ:
Jack was in a state of shock at the sight of her, heâd not been expecting her to have changed much but oh how she had in the months heâd been away.
No one had mentioned a baby, not a single soul at Hogwarts, of course there were more important things to worry about when youâre on a battlefield.
âWhen did this happen?â He gestured once heâd pulled away from their embrace.
She laughed, but it sounded like a gasp as her eyes welled with tears. âI found out after you and Ted ran,â she explained, her hands spreading across his chest. Yes, he was alive and well, if a little on the lean side, but nothing a hot meal and a warm bed couldnât fix. It was unbelievable that after the losses of the past year, which reached a striking peak after the Battle of Hogwarts, Katherine should be granted a boon. Her husband was home. Her baby would know their father.
âWhen Ted died, I thoughtâwe all thoughtââ
She choked, tears cascading down her face. âAndy insisted I come stay with her. Said I shouldnât live alone in my condition.â
âShe was right. Iâm glad youâve not been alone. Look at you though, Katherine.â He was taking in all he had missed, absorbing it like a sponge.

carryindabannerâ:
âIâm sorry, I tried. I tried.â Jack felt broken offering Nymphadoraâs wand to Andromeda. âI tried to help but I couldnât.â He was apologizing for the death of his best friend, heâd seen her grieving over her husbandâs body, heâd seen her aunt coming up, heâd tried to stop it from happening but couldnât move fast enough.
âI thought I should return this before I go looking for Katherine.â
Andromeda pulled away, the momentary brightness in her eyes gone. Her family was all gone except for her granddaughter now. They were either dead, or they may as well be. But now, Andromeda found herself in the company of another young woman who had become a niece.
A niece who didnât know her husband was waiting here.
âKatherineâs here.â
Jack felt his breath catch in his throat at those two words. Putting hope in the place of grief. Heâd been so worried, no one had seen Katherine at Hogwarts and heâd feared the worst happened, pure blood only gets you so far if you married a muggle born.
âSheâs-Sheâs here?â If he had Katherine, then maybe something close to normalcy could be found once more.
She nodded. âSheâs putting Teddy down for a nap. Wait here.â
In a few moments, Katherine turned from the crib and found Andromeda waiting in the doorway. âGive Teddy to me,â she said over his wails. She reached out for the baby and explained, âHeâs alive. Jack is alive and waiting downstairs.â
âJack?â she gasped, clutching her six-month belly. He was alive. Her husband was aliveâand waiting just a stairwell away! All the grief and uncertainty had had a happy end after all!
âThank you, Andy!â she said as she rushed out. She hurried out as fast as her bulky form would allow, clambering down the stairs until her eyes alit on Jack, skinny and battered and alive. A cry escaped her, a desperate sob of gratitude.
âJack!â
