Matt Duffer indicated that the follow up is better describe as a sequel rather than a second season.

The plan is to continue with the same set of characters

It will take place during the Fall of 1984, which is 1 year after season 1.

There Will be 3 new characters; Max, Roman and Billy. Max is a tough 13 year old female, Billy is supposedly Max’s 17 year old brother who “steals people’s girlfriends” and drives a black Camaro, and Roman is either a woman/man in their 30′s.

Max and Roman are series regulars while Billy’s status in the show is unknown.

“When terrifying supernatural forces once again begin to affect Hawkins, they realize Will’s disappearance was only the beginning,” reads an official season two logline posted with the casting breakdown

Matt Duffer has confirmed that Barb is not coming back, but also continued on to say that Barb will never be forgotten and that there will be justice for her.

“It’s about a girl who gets turned into a swan and she needs love to break the spell, but her prince falls for the wrong girl so she kills herself.”
