The series of historical events that determined the current silhouette of Mexico also determined what we think of as “us,” an artificial “us” that could well have included people born in El Salvador or Guatemala. Historic events shaped by the dynamics of power determined what the word us means and why others cannot pass freely through all the territories they would like to. The same can be said of the northern border, where the voices of stateless peoples and nations did not play a part in its establishment. “They have no reason to enter a country that is not theirs” is a phrase repeatedly tirelessly without anyone ever really questioning how that country came to be “theirs” or why it can no longer belong to someone born in Honduras.

Our present isn’t the confinement that survival imposes on us; it is the opening to all possibilities. It is due to panic that the oligarchic State is forced to adopt measures that even yesterday it decreed were impossible. It is to the call of life and the earth to be restored that we want to respond. Quarantine is good for reflection. Confinement doesn’t abolish the presence of the street; it reinvents it. Cum granosalis, let me think that the insurrection of everyday life has unexpected therapeutic virtues.

For to prostrate oneself and then to get up again is a symbol of resurrection.

‘They’ champion a cause, whether it be a ‘return to traditional values,’ or ‘retributive justice and social change’ not because such things are formally coherent as a blueprint for saving the fucking human race, but because they’re selling you a platform to get you behind them for their access to privilege and convenience. Those they see as like them, they use as a following of sorts as per their chosen identity shtick. And they all want your money and your guilt. They’re identical. They’re the direct results of many generations lived in a capitalist society where every idea is designed to reflect only its sellable, consumable qualities.

Holiness (wholeness) is not a sterile, one-sided purity but is the reconciliation of opposites, embracing both poles and all the teeming levels of interwoven lives and deaths between.

Let us be proud that we are not experts in anything. Let us be proud of the words that are given to us for nothing, not to teach anyone, not to confute anyone, not to prove anyone absurd, but to point beyond all objects into the silence where nothing can be said.

Attention can penetrate beyond the opposites of particular and general and see that nirvana and samsara, the noumenal and the phenomenal, the one and the many, being and becoming, are one and the same—or rather, as Zen teachers say, ‘not-two.’
