Taking the last two oysters that were left, I quickly swallow them, trying not to grimace as I do. It definitely wasn’t my favorite meal, but it was better than snacks. It was goo for me to have them, but that was no meal. I throw the oysters shells in the fire pit with the remains of the fish and finish my burying work. It almost looked as if nobody had passed by this place. Then, I place my pack on my back and wait for Amely to be ready. Once we’re all ready to go, we all head back in the building we had left earlier today’s direction.

We walk slowly, quietly, weapon raised just in case something happen. But it was late, people were probably sleeping or eating like we just did. We needed a place to hide and sleep. Hopefully we wont find anyone but we all knew there a major chance we see Gunnar since we saw him walking toward this area

when we saw a small builsing with a J on it I point the boys. «Let’s go here. Let’s hide and sleep. If you guys want to fight you need more rest than the 3 hours we allowed ourself yesterday»

Making our way toward the two buildings I try to remember which one I saw him run into. Left he went left. Our best bet of finding him would be in there, so when Amley asked to go in there to hide/sleep I didnt know what to say. I knew she didnt want to fight, but we had to start sometime. So it did hurt me when I decide to go in there without telling them about Gunnar.

"I agree with you on the hide and sleep part, but I think you're wrong about the fighting part, Little Am. All that protein from those oysters really helped. " I say nudging her softly with my elbow. "I feel like I could take on a bull" gripping my axe tightly we walk down the pathway toward the door. The games had finally begun for us, and I'm more than ready to play now.

I remove the fish from the fire and place the empty shells of the oyster dirty side down to make an approximate plate to put the fish on. “There’s nothing like a good almost looking like a plate thing.” I say, cutting the fish with my katana. “That’s a really overkill knife to cut a poor fish” I think out loud. Once I finish cutting it, I look at Carr and Am. “I don’t think we can actually lift it now… so I’d suggest we just kind of pick from the fish and they oysters! Lunch’s ready kids” I say with a benevolent smile.

I thank Cardell for the piece of bread as I catch it in its flight and cut off a piece of it before I put a part of the fish on the fish on it and take a mouthful. It was surprisingly good! Realizing we would not need the fire anymore, I decided to put it off by throwing sand on it. On contrary to water, it made no smoke and we did not wanted people to spot us from afar. Thinking about Cardell’s point. “You know what. You’re right Carr. Let’s pay Gunnar a little visit. If he’s not already out of that place, it means it has to be a little comfortable. We should see by ourselves.” I smiled at him, a shiny competitive spark glittering in my eyes.

I thank Cardell with a smile for the bread but to stop fighting too. I start eating and quite surprisingly, it was a feast. I was starting to feel a bit better as my belly was getting full. I let the boy talk and look at Elijah putting sand on the fire. I grin, proud of him that he thought of that. I was sure I had to explain why we shouldnt put water on the fire

I shouldn’t have left the boys decide because going to hunt someone wasnt what I wanted. But f we were lucky, Gunna wouldnt be there and we wouldnt have to fight. «Try an oyster» I said to Cardell seeing he wasnt touching them

When I saw that look in his eyes, I knew it was a little bit of a challenge. It would have bothered me yesterday, but now I've realized what we have to do. I can't just be this fucken wussy anymore, trying to save everyone I saw. I had to be ruthless to help the people that meant the most to me. I smirk back, the same one I always give 'em before a big game. I went back to eating my bread, I still didnt want to eat that disgusting looking thing.

Elijah got up and threw sand on the fire. Stopping any smoke, I guess there goes my objections from earlier huh, When Amley asked me to try it I was just about to barf, but I had to try it now. I bet she knew she could get me to do it just by asking huh, clever girl. She handed it to me and I gave her a smile. "Yummm looks great" I hesitantly place it to my mouth and eat it. I had to stop myself from spitting it out. She handed me one more, Just kill me now. I ate it quickly and swallowed.

"Those were so good thank you, Im sooo full now. No more for me" I grabbed the water bottle from my bag and took a huge gulp to wash down the taste. "Well if you're both done I'm ready to go" standing i twirl my axe in hand.

I let the boy making the cooking part as I did the fire. This was weird. The girl was making the fire and going t grab oyster and the boys were cooking. the world was upside down. I didnt want to tell the boy taht their fake cheer up was a waste of time. We wont make it to the end us three. and I was maybe the onl one here not wishing it to happen

because if we do, if we are the final three, it meas we had to kill eachoter. They have to had their victor. No matter the cost. «Do what you want.» I said to the boys. One wanted to do A and the other wanted to do the exact oppisite B. And I fell that despite anything, nothing was safe enough. «I just dont want to stay near the fire, otherwise i dont mind»

As Elijah cooked the food I ruffled through my bag for the loaf of bread. We still did have all this food, and we aren’t going to be in the arena long anyway. Might as well make the meal a good none. I pull the loaf out and divide it into 3 pieces. Handing one to Amley and throwing one at Elijah. I look back over to Am and she has a sad look on her face. No doubt ignoring what we had to say. She was putting herself down again.

I squeeze her hand reassuringly. I’ll stop arguing with Elijah over what to do, its just adding more stress onto her. “Alright Eli, I'm just saying to think it over, its your decision. But remember that we can’t let our guard down. If we see anyone we can’t just keep running.” When I say the words Im still not sure what I mean by it. Am I talking about trying to help people live I wanted to? Or was I saying we needed to kill? It took me by surprise when I realized, I meant we needed to kill.

I give Carr a glare as he talks about my oyster opening skill and, when I finally get to open the oyster, trow him the part that had no animal in it. A smile light up my face and I burst in laughter. This done, I go back to my oyster opening. Once I had understood how I was suppose to open them, it was pretty easy. There was this whole somewhere near a spongy place and this was where the tip of my blade was suppose to do. After that, I only had to twist the blade and the shell would open.

"Survival… no I didn’t… I assumed you would." I say, smiling boldly at Amely. "You know how good of a student I am…" I keep opening the oysters, really getting a hand of it. "To come back to our survival plan. I say, once we’re done, we bury the fire and go back in the grass to walk or walk in the water. We don’t want people to see our footprint, that’d be an invite for them to follow us." I them point in the opposite direction of the building, where the person we had seen the day before wasn’t. "And I think we should go that way. As far as we can from Gunnar."

I roll my eyes, a bit amused but still trying to get serious. «You should have boys.. When I wont be around what will yuo do» I said as if I knew I wouldnt make it.

I continue to rub the stone and create sparks. Finally, with Cardell help we manaage to start the fire. «I agree. But i dont think theres any place around that is safe. We just have to find a spot that is free of people» Yes. safe wasnt an option anymore I think sadly as I trying to make the fire grow

I look up at Amley, her words again bringing herself down. I hated it. "Thats won't be a problem, cause I'm with you till the end" I say giving her a confident smile and sly wink. She can't think like that, not in the arena.

We try again and the fire ignites. Seeing that tiny flame gave me alot of hope. I raised my fist up "Fuck yeah" a huge smile on my face. When I hear their plan it makes sense, but they didnt know what was in those other areas. "But we don't know if anyones there or not, at least if we go towards him we know its just him right? Also lets stick to the trees so we have cover, plus we could retreat to the water if anything goes wrong" What i was really thinking is its just sooooooo cold.

I see Amely get out of the water and I do the same. I was cold now and we had enough food to have a great meal. Stepping on dry sand, I pick the fish I caught earlier and open its belly before taking out the nasty things we couldn’t eat. “You’ve taken down a tree, that’s true. But can you eat it?” I ask joking. Starting a fire uh.. I couldn’t do it. I had flint stones tough and handed them to Amely after taking them out of the bag. “Can you do this? I’ll open the oysters?”

Saying so, I pile up all the oysters me and my sister have harvested and start to open them one by one. At first, I sucked. It was pretty dangerous to open them with a katana and I almost cut myself twice, but eventually I got the hang of it and could open all of them as the others were taking care of the fire for the fish.

«Did you guys went to the survival training or only did weapon» I try to tease hoping they wouldnt take it bad. Cardell help me do the fire pyramid with wood and i took some leafs to start the fire. I start hitting the stones together, creating sparkle. «Blow a little on them, maybe they will catch the spark» I ask to Cardell looking at my brother workign hard

I walk over to her as she grabs the stones. "Well if I didnt go to the weapons station, you wouldnt have anyone to protect you" I said smiling. " I mean look at this guy, can't even open an oyster" I say as Elijah attempts to open the first one. When she sparks the stones a small spark comes up, i blow. Nothng happens. She tries again and I blow. Nothing.

"I have no idea whats going on here " I let out a nervous laugh, feeling dumb for not knowing what to do.

I still walk in the fishes’ direction, silently, not caring to pick oysters with now. Raising my katana high in the air, I strike with a quick blow, but not quick enough to stab anything. “Dammit!” I murmur, walking were the fish had swam to. This time, I stab quickly and successfully catch one. “Oh yeah!” I say, happy as I wave my katana in the air. “Looks like we’ll also eat fish for dinner!” I exclaim myself, happy that I succeeded in my quest. I walk back to the shore and put the fish on the sand before emptying my pockets. I’d wash the fish later and empty it when we’d be ready to cook it.

"What the oyster taste like?" I ask, returning in the water. "I don’t know, but it doesn’t really look that good…" I say, shivering as I walk deeper in the water. Picking a new oyster that I place in my pocket.

«awh! yeah! Nice catch Ely!» I said with a big grin just to see his gaze on me

«Salty apparently. Thats what I’ve read» I said at his question thanking my eidetic memory to save my life once more. We picked a few more before I was too cold to contine. Anyway we had enough for us three. I went out of the water, shivering and starting to help our friend making a decent fire

I heard Elijah cheer as he caught a fish. I turn around and see him raise it victoriously. Now I need to prove I can do better. Ill chop this tree down. I steady the axe to the tree directly in the spot I struck earlier. I raise the axe big swinging it across a hard THUD, almost there. One more hard swing and the tree CRACKS the tree falls back and hits the floor the tree falls to the bushes making barley above a shout of noise, the leaves as cushions. I smile triumphantly. "Yeah but did you take down a tree?" I say pointing toward it

I pull the tree off and begin cutting it into smaller pieces. When I'm finished Ibring it over to where Elijah and Amley have setup camp. "So who's starting the fire?" Hopefully one of these two volunteer, because I have NO idea what to do here.

I harvested another oyster and slide it in my pocket. As I was walking around, I noticed there was a few fishes swiming by. If only I could catch one ! “Yeah! I guess you should pick wood so we can do at least a barbecue like… if we can light a fire and put it out pretty quickly we could bake stuff on coal…” I pick a new oyster as I slowly walk in the fishes’ direction. A few more step and I’ll be able to stab one with my Katana, I feel it.

I saw Cardel face and I wonder if I was too hard on him. Probably. I felt bad suddenly. I just didnt like to see him eat strawberries as I was freezing my ass off in this fucking cold water. Okay Amely. Breath. He’s doing something now. Just breath and relax.

«I dont think its safe to sleep here anyway. What about we eat here and walk away a bit further to sleep after. So even if people see our fire we wont be there. » I propose trying to be nicer now.

"Sounds like a plan to me" I stretched out a bit. I walk back over to the nearby trees ready to cut that tree down. It was flimsy as hell, so itll go down good. I find the tree with the deep cut through it, here it is.

"So what do those things tastelike anyway? I say loudly so they could hear me over the waves. I ready my axe and CHOP hard. I wonder if itll be this easy on one of my classmates. I bet it wasnt long till I found that out.

I nodded. It made sense not to build a fire after all. That one was pretty visible and we didn’t especially wanted to be seen from that far. “You’re probably right.” I said, still looking down. When Amely caught the first oyster, I smiled. “Great! I just have to catch some too!” I said, glad to know what it looked like. It wasn’t too long before my toe landed on one and I gladly brought it out of the water, proud of myself. Putting it in my pocket, I continued to look for them and it wasn’t too long until I found a second one. Raising my head, I looked at Cardell eating his strawberries.

"Those little things might not look good, but they’ve got much more protein than fruits. You should try some anyway… just so you don’t feel hungry 20 minutes after eating these." I say, pointing at the strawberries. It was true and as sportsman those were the things we learned pretty fast. We needed sugar and protein to be able to properly function. I putted the second oyster I had found in my pocket, looking for a new one.

For someone in a deadly arena Cardel was a bit too comfortable. I was a bit annoy that he didnt even try to do something. As I was picking oyster, I wonder if he was counting on my brain to help him so he dont have to work. I didnt want to think like that but it happen often in my life. «Car can you try to do something useful please.» I ask trying to be polite as I continue to pick our dinner

They were right only strawberriers are bad for you, i need meat. Amleys comment catches me by surprise. I guess I should try and help them out. It was my meal too after all. " Alright then should I get some wood or something? Cause i dont wanna go in there." I shiver at the thought.

I grab my axe and stand. REady to go back at cut that fucking tree down.

Finally on shore, I remove my shoes and look at Amely entering the water, ignoring on purpose the kiss I had just witnessed. As she swears, I take a falsely offended face. “Watch your language young girl!” I say, taking a really deep voice, before laughing as Cardell adds in a joke.

Preparing myself mentally, I try to look tough as I step in the water, but get out a a split second: “oh shit!” I let out in surprise. I wasn’t expecting it to be that cold, but as I really wanted to eat, this would not stop me. Taking a deep breath, I step in the water again and take a few steps back in. Cardell then declares that he will watch us as we pick food. “Than, can miss Goode prepare a firecamp in case we come back with a fish?” I ask grimacing as I jump from one foot to the other. It was really cold.

I then turn in Amely’s direction. “What are we looking for exactly?” I ask, holding my katana in one hand in case I see a fish and looking in the water.

I laugh a bit. Between Elijah being a goofy and Cardell joining him made me feel so much better. I suddenly remeber why we were together. Why we were friend. The stress and the arena might have drove us appart but things like this proev that we were stronger than fear.

«You are a wuss» I said to Cardell throwing water toward him before going until my ankle were wet. Okay lets not stay forever here «I dont know…» I admit not able to discribe the image I saw in the books. I found one and put my hand on the water to grab it. «Oyster!» I said happy. I showerd him so he could see.

They bot made fun of me but I kept my smile on. At least i wasnt getting my ass frozen off.. I shrieked when the water hit me. I was acting like a little schoolgirl huh? I just laugh it off, I'm glad things arent changing between us. When Elijah asked em to build a fire i realized there was one problem, I had no idea how. I worked with wood all my life, but tell me to set fire to it without using a lighter and I'm useless. Why I didnt go to that station was beyond me. So I just had to come up with an excuse. Thats when I noticed the smoke pillar in the distance. Perfect. "No can do Captain, unless you want every tribute in the place coming for us" I say pointing toward the smoke.

Amley bringing the oyester up was the funniest thing, she was so happy to have caught it I was proud of her. Then I saw how it looked, NOPE. I ruffle through my bag and pull out the carton of strawberries. I pull one out and it looks so good. "I think I'll just stick to my delicious strawberries, instead of....that." I say placing one in my mouth. They really were refreshing.

I can’t help but smile back at her. That smile… it looked so much like mom’s. He calling my Ely only brought me back home for a second. Until my look went back to the sea. I was now back in the arena. There is no such thing as a sea in 12 and this alone was enough to make me realize there was so little time to smile now. I eat the chips she gave me and nod at her answer.

I was packing back my bag when she suggested we should go and look for food. That was exactly my plan. I grabbed my back and put in on my shoulder after standing up. Then, I started to roll the bottom of my pants so they would no get wet. Normally I would have removed my cloths, but there were cameras everywhere and I did not know if I would have the time to slowly eat what we would have harvested, or if we would have to run away and not grab anything. “Excellent idea. We’ll harvest enough for the 3 of us… are you coming Carr or you stay in the bushes?” I asked, worried, about how silent Cardell had been since we got out of the recreation building.

We start walking and I was wondering if mom, dad and buzz were watching. I wonder what they talk or think of us. I am sure mom is happy Elijah is around. I am anyway.

I rollup my pants and undo my shoes, letting the sand going in my toe. I look at Cardell walking toward us. He was hurt and sad but I was proud of him trying to stay back on the game. When he was next to us I kiss his cheek and put my toes in the water. «shit is cold as fuck» I swear then blush. I never swear out loud.
