O’Neil was a leading Victorian painter of historical scenes. He worked in a highly detailed and realistic style. O’Neil studied art at the Royal Academy schools from 1836. He was a founder member of The Clique, a group of young artists who were dissatisfied with the restrictions of the Royal Academy and wanted to bring a new realism and emotional intensity to their work.

Mathieu Kessels (1784 – 1836), was a Dutch Neoclassical sculptor who worked in Paris and St Petersbourg, before settling the main of his career out of Rome, where he arrived in 1819.  On December 26, 1829, Kessels was admitted to the Academy of Saint Luke as residing academician of merit. On November 5, 1830, as the statutes prescribed, he gave as a gift to the Academy a work that can be identified with this Resting Discobolus, a subject the sculptor frequently devoted himself at several occasions, starting from the moment when he began to work as a student in Thorvaldsen’s workshop, the year after his arrival in Rome. Of this work, that shows clear references to Hellenistic and classical art, different replicas, partial reproductions and variants exist in various European museums.  Mattieu Kessels died in Rome while working on Saint Michael overcoming the Hydra of Anarchy for the church of Saint Gudula, now Brussels cathedral.  On Kessels’s death his studio, inventoried by Thorvaldsen, was acquired by the Belgian government and transferred to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, in Brussels.
