not asking this to be rude, genuinely wondering: did cevans and hayley atwell actually like,, do something to emily vancamp that I missed? I know they were clear they didn't like the Steve+Sharon relationship in cacw but I don't know if they actually did something to be rude to her that I missed at the time (I was younger and not much paying attention to anything then.) Hope this doesn't come across as rude, just trying to get answers. Ty !
I’d prefer it if you messaged me privately about this and I’ll try to explain it better, but basically they were both super petty about the whole thing, calling it icky to her face, or being completely dismissive of her and saying he’d rather be with the Black Widow, even tho he was literally doing civil war press and knew damn well where the story was headed. Meanwhile Emily had to sit there and take it, deal with the fandom backlash against her specifically, and defend her character, being one of the few cast members who actually knows her shit, and wants to do Sharon justice, with the three and a half minutes of screen time she was given per movie.
One time Hayley got asked on twitter whether she approves of Steve/Sharon or Steve/Nat, and she said absolutely not, but yes to Steve/Bucky, only because she knew damn well that’d never be a genuine option. You can take it as a joke but Steve gets shipped with 345634 different characters, and everyone was just looking for a reason to hate Sharon & Emily, and felt validated by Hayley and Chris’ behavior.
I don’t know what happened bts, but midway through cacw promo Emily switched to doing interviews with RDJ & team Iron Man instead, and you could tell she felt more comfortable around them.
And you know the worst part is, they’d both be all over Steve/Sharon, if they had let Hayley play Sharon in a blonde wig, like she wanted to initially. She wanted to play her, and then when EVC got cast, she said Peggy’s rolling in her grave over them sharing a kiss. Hello?
It’s like, no one’s forcing them to like how the romance played out in the mcu, I don’t either, but it really wouldn’t have hurt to at least try and be professional, instead of encouraging their fans to be horrible to this real life person who’s been nothing but nice to them and was just trying to do her job. It was just. The most unfortunate situation ever.
I can't believe how politely Emily van Camp told Kevin Feige to go fuck himself on stage.
KEVIN: "where has Sharon Carter been in the mcu?"
EMILY: "you tell me, Kevin."
This is going to be unpopular but I feel really sorry for Emily VanCamp. Marvel hired her, didn’t use her, and now will just forget about her. And she got all those death threats and I can’t say it won’t get better. Imagine getting an awesome job, then not getting what you thought you were getting, having your coworkers ignore you or disrespect you, and then basically being let go only they don’t even tell you, you just know. On top of getting a bunch of death threats. My heart honestly goes out to her and I’m angry at the russos and marvel for what they did to her
This might be an unpopular post, but it shouldn’t be!
What really gets me is that it’s so obvious that this was never their endgame plan for Steve. The writers talked down the relationship in TFA, CE and EVC said these were just the seeds of their ship. So all of them performed that relationship in good faith.
But Emily. ESPECIALLY Emily. She defended the relationship. She constantly made the case for the relationship because that’s almost all she got asked about. She was pretty much the only person going to bat for it, again and again. Defending her character, defending the ship. For months. Doing it almost entirely alone.
She propped up the other actors. She complimented even the ones she didn’t have scenes in. CE gave fans who were trying to get Emily to kill herself a rallying cry to use, and Emily talked about how nice and talented he is. The nicest thing he’s said about her since 2015 is her name in response to “Who’s most likely to cry at a Disney movie?”
One of the people in Marvel wanted to play Sharon but didn’t get the role. Prior to Emily being cast, this person said that if SHE got to play Sharon, Sharon and Steve would be true love. But Emily was cast, and suddenly this person thought Staron was disgusting and borderline-incestuous and disrespectful. She was asked if Sharon should have an expanded role in the universe after CW, and she said, “No, absolutely not.” People cheered. This person put down Sharon, knowing that Emily would get the brunt of the hate for playing Sharon, and she put Sharon down for roughly five years to applause and laughter.
And Emily still said good things about her.
The way fandom and Marvel and the Russos treated Emily VanCamp is inexcusable. And the fact that Marvel gave in is mind-boggling and hurtful.
“One of the people in Marvel”
It was Hayley Atwell. I understand if you didn’t names, but I will, bc I’m salty and how Hayley came to treat both Sharon the character and Emily the actor is just atrocious.
She acted all supportive, did dubsmashes with her and such, and then threw her and the character in front of the bus.
@spidyboymiles also thanks for using my post I knew it would come to great use!
Oh man this is some motherfucking tea right here. I just watched Endgame and to see Sharon and EVC completely erased that she wasn’t even one of the cameos or minor characters shoehorned into the film is just so utterly disappointing.
That whole period was a nightmare and the hatred only fueled my love for Sharon and EVC more. It wasn’t just the fans, sadly people influential to Marvel including the actors mentioned in this post were just heartbreakingly disappointing. For so long so-called fans championed more women in the MCU and more comraderie between women, but no one came to EVC’s defense when Hayley Atwell said all those things about Sharon and by extension, the actress playing her. Haters were fed with the haphazard stuff Hayley and Chris (which is even more disappointing) said.
It’s beyond shipping, it’s the complete disrespect towards EVC who received death threats, was teased on twitter, and correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure she was booed during one of the red carpets? Please check that info for me. In all my experience in multiple fandoms, I’d never seen so many shippers come together to unfairly target a ship, fans, and the actress playing one half of that ship.
You can laugh about canon if you want, disagree if you want, hate what I have to say if you want. But you can’t deny the stuff that antis and Hayley did. It’s all there on the internet if you search for the videos and interviews.
Its annoying how much Chris and Hayley are worshipped because their “feminists” 🙄🙄 lol they’re feminism is performative at best. When will y'all stop kissing their ass and praising them for doing the bare minimum, Chris isn’t the real life emobodiment of captain america 🤢🤧 he wishes he was lmaooo
Also when asked about having lgbt+ and poc representation in her show her reply was “wait your turn…” 😶 lmaoo glad that show got canceled, she was fine with baiting fans of angela x peggy ship just for views and hyping them up, but at the end of the end of day she didn’t actually care about representation her she’s poster picture for a white feminist. Also Hayley you can talk all the shit you want about Sharon and Emily but don’t pretend that you weren’t thirsting after her role 🤧🤮
They really showed their asses but people refused to acknowledge it. Their behavior and attitude towards Emily and about the character Sharon has been nasty and disgusting, I hope it comes back to bite them in the asses and pray that them and their awful fans stay the fuck away from Emily, keep her name and the character Sharon out their mouths.
@mainstreetusay Yep! Two people on tumblr who attended the premiere said they heard people booing when EVC’s name was announced/she took the stage. There were at least two other people who said they never heard that, but they also acknowledged that things were so loud and the area large enough that they wouldn’t have heard boos if they were far enough away.
Like, not only did Sharon Carter never get a fair shake by the Russos (they admitted in a 2014 interview while promoting TWS that they’d cut an entire storyline for Sharon due to time, hence why the movie was only “introducing” the character), one of the deleted scenes made the DVD and we know from leaked storyboards that she originally had much more to do. But they cut it. Not only that, but they never let her win a fight. And they show her going into fights at a complete 90-degree angle (other cameras get to face the camera). Sharon is ALWAYS filmed at an angle or behind something or someone. They cut her screentime down to 7 ½ minutes - 2 ½ in Winter Soldier, where she was originally said to be the lead (SJ hadn’t even signed on yet, and there was only a rumor that SJ would APPEAR in the film, but the Russos talked later of casting her and expanding the role because they wanted to meet SJ and are huge fans of hers. So.), to 5 minutes in Civil War, where, again, she was supposed to have a much larger role. On Jimmy Kimmel, when he asked who among the cast (Team Iron Man, at least), got the whole script, Emily was the only one who nodded. So Markus and McFeely might have liked and trusted her enough, or she originally had a larger role and had to understand Sharon’s motivations since her character was on both sides to an extent, or she didn’t realize what she got wasn’t the whole script (and with 5 mins of screentime, they didn’t just give her those 5-10 pages and let her think that was the full movie. No one can believe that).
Emily also talked in interviews about how Marvel had her on a diet for Civil War, which was hard because she was such a foodie. Maybe she was just joking? But what an odd tidbit to throw out. (I can’t find the link for this one, sorry!)
During the Chelsea Handler interview, Chris Evans talked about how the first step to getting women equal pay in Hollywood was advocating for them to have equal screentime. Emily VanCamp, with her five minutes of time in Civil War, was sitting right beside him. He never publicly advocated for her. The nicest thing he said about her during press for Civil War was her name in response to “Who’s most likely to cry at a Disney movie?” He seemed happy that Cap got to make out with someone again, and talked about how the movie was planting the seeds of Sharon and Steve and how they had time to develop the relationship more (awwwwwwwwwwkward now), but never actually said anything nice about Sharon herself or Emily.
She was so supportive of her coworkers, even when she didn’t have scenes with them. She was Paul Bettany was hilarious (they did press together, and he apparently told a lot of funny stories on the plane), and when an interviewer tried to get her to trash talk Tom Holland, she started complimenting him instead.
The bit that really gets me, though, is that they had Emily VanCamp at the 10-year-anniversary photoshoot. At that point in time, they had either already filmed the Steggy scene or were about to. The scene that makes Steve seem like he was just using Sharon as a literal replacement for her great-aunt even though they look and sound nothing alike. The scene that likely erases Sharon from the MCU, just like HA wanted, because even though Sharon doesn’t know what Steve did, the audience does. And they had her there, smiling, just glad to be included, and all along they knew what they were going to do. Chris knew, Hayley knew, the Russos knew, Markus & McFeely knew, and they had her there to, what. Humiliate her? As one last hurrah? Why have her there if they knew they were going to write her out? It was cruel.
Basically, Emily VanCamp/Sharon Carter were undermined or outright insulted by coworkers and directors. She was hung out to dry, and fandom was happy to let it happen. She was treated horribly by so many people, and judging by the fan & media response, nearly everyone is STILL happy to let the treatment continue, or feel she somehow earned it.
I had to do… things to survive. Some of them were violent… Some, degrading… And all of them gave me a new perspective. (Captain America, v3, #446) (A STUDY IN SURVIVAL)

Wanna know how dirty Sharon Carter was done by the MCU?
I want to see Bucky and Sharon Carter as BFFs in The Falcon and Winter Soldier show.
I don’t think that’s too much to ask.
Ok but consider: Steve, Nat and Sam go on a mission somewhere in cold climate like Russia and it goes wrong and they have to make an escape so Steve just goes "don't worry I got this", whips out his shield, pulls Sam and Nat into his lap and they just slide down of the mountain using the shield as a sled.
As awesome as that is, I am thinking about how they are just speeding down the mountain screaming their heads off because I don't think the shield would slow down like regular sleds that are slowed by frictional force. Since the shield can conserve momentum and maintain constant velocity while in air, it means air resistance/friction doesn't slow it down.
Well this just got a lot more interesting lmao!
Steve: don't worry, I got this!
*50 meters down the hill*
Steve: I HAVE MADE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE-
Sam and Nat: *panicked screaming*

― CAPTAIN AMERICA VOL. 5 #22
why do we pretend that peggy was one of the people that really knew steve before he became captain america lmao she knew him for what? a week? before he got the serum it’s not like they were spending a lot of time together. the people that really knew steve, actually knew the real steve rogers before captain america, were his mom and bucky, who have both been erased from his life at the demands of making sure nothing seems more important than romantic love between a man and a woman
