Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

to be fair when the word initially came about it was often used as a shorthand to say "hey there are some issues with this that aren't hugely bigoted but it does deserve some discussion" and opening up talks around things.
it was also used when people wanted to discuss themes and tropes that had multiple issues where the root or how things reflected into life isn't perfectly clear.
the internet being what it is that quickly got lost and it became the word that essentially means " this is bad no more discussion", rather then an invitation to start one.
Completely true. Ultimately the core problem I think is that social media and the way humans interact on the internet creates massive pressure explicitly against critical thinking and acknowledging the existence of nuance.

I need help finding an audition monologue for TGWDLM!! I've somehow made it my whole life only going to auditions that provide sides and now I need to bring a monologue of my own and I have none :( any tips? (auditioning for any male role)
Monologue found!!! now I just gotta spend all day tomorrow filming a million takes of it and my song and overanalyzing each one and then I'll be done!

Got called back for Ted!!! He’s my number one role but knowing the quality of my audition this is probably just for courtesy and I’m being fast tracked to ensemble. But a guy can dream.
dedicating myself to learning harmonies as early as possible bc that's the hardest thing for me to do
Callbacks done!! I think I did a great job BUT there was someone else who was much bigger and more comedic as Ted. Idk what the director is looking for so I’m still holding out hope, but I’m happy with my scenes.
Alright!!! Drumroll please….. Ted/Bill Understudy + ensemble!! Pretty much what I was expecting lol. The small ensemble bit parts will be chosen..: soon? I guess? So idk what specifically I’ll be playing yet BUT we do get guaranteed understudy performances!! And I get to choose which track I play (I’m picking Ted. Obviously.)!!! So I’m pretty happy with this all around, it being not my forte in many ways (musical, contemporary, comedy) lol.
Oh shit UPDATE??? I’ve been offered the role of Bill?? I guess the other actor chosen had conflicts or something? This is so fucking sick and awesome???
