Like for many people, having to micromanage your every thought and constantly correct and repress "wrong" thoughts and feelings is far more unhealthy than joking about dark subjects - or openly accepting and working with an unpleasant reality - ever could be, but I guess we're all too crazy to be allowed to conclude that something doesn't work for us

I don't know if it was the depression speaking but I've always only seen the weariness in adults caused by work and life. I could see it in their eyes, in the way they dragged their bodies home from work. I was so young and I hated the thought of having to do the same for the rest of my life. Every grown up had to do it. Wake up, make it to work, endure the stress and tiredness, somehow get home and the laundry or making dinner waited for them there. It never seemed to end. Work. Nothing else. I always heard everyone complaining or if they didn't it seemed like they were just too tired to speak but the word tired was everywhere. Somehow I could see it in their eyes. Or written on their forehead.

pop health science is so annoying bc it'll be like "did you know? eating strawberries will give you mega cancer" and you're like pfft whatever begone influencer. but sometimes then you'll see a reasonably credible article like "Study Shows Possible Link Between Strawberries and Mega Cancer" and you're not usually the type to follow that kind of thing religiously but idk maybe you should consider not eating strawberries? but then there's another article saying "Strawberry/Mega Cancer Study Debunked" and it turns out the original study had a sample size of 3 and was funded by Big Blueberry, and strawberries may have a small connection to mega cancer but only if you are genetically predisposed to mega cancer and eat 50 strawberries every day. so you return to your strawberry eating life. but whenever you eat strawberries in public someone tells you about the mega cancer.

my 100% failproof way to handle reactionaries asking why i don’t shave at all is going “because i don’t want to” it works because what they really want is an argument about the merits of feminism, and they’ll draw it out and try to convince you it’s a cult or whatever, but you can avoid it all by sticking to “i just don’t wanna. don’t feel like it” and if they argue with you about it you can use your ultimate ability, which is “i’m sorry i thought it was a free country?” which, believe me, they cannot come back from. they’ll either drop it or start harping on something you didn’t say, and it’s important you don’t take the bait at that point. when they can’t argue with what you say, they assume your beliefs and attack those. and you crucially must be visibly baffled at their change of direction because it will make them seem and possibly feel crazy (which they are). “i don’t want to shave” is a perfect response because truly it all comes down to autonomy and the ability to do what you want. they’ll try to say “feminism makes you think you have to do that” and it’s important to not take that bait. to reiterate that you don’t know what they mean and you just don’t like shaving and that it’s really weird to look into it that deep. this works i promise
