i love how garnet and pearl are just continuing to use the name of their infamous guerilla military organization while their current jobs are fighting lv4 rpg monsters and giving each other basket weaving seminars. and steven has no context for this and just thinks of "The Crystal Gems" as basically the name for his mom's side of the family. so he walks up to lapis and says "you should hang out with me and my treehouse friends, the Viet Cong!"
be nice to him its his first day!! πππ

thinking about eva stratt crafting a coffin for her friends. the very best coffin, full of every piece of pirated media the entire world has to offer. crafted for maximum comfort, this coffin, with every bit of authority available to her, which is all of it.
and then thinking about all the people who call her cold or uncaring or clinical about what she has to do to save earth. eva stratt, who had silly t-shirts and vodka and favorite meals stored in the Hail Mary and treated with the same level of importance as the finely tuned equipment and the centrifuge the entire planet relies on for salvation.
and then thinking about eva stratt nodding and saying, βyeah, Iβm pretty awful. thatβs why iβm in chargeβ with a neutral expression and even believing it. as if crafting the most beautiful coffin and homage to her soon-to-be dead friends wonβt haunt her always.
thinking about eva stratt being the first person on the βeva stratt is a monsterβ train, welcoming ryland grace aboard and knowing she believed in him more than anyone else.
itβs fine, really itβs fine and normal and eva stratt makes beautiful coffins for the people and things she cares about.

One thing that's so underrated about PHM is Eva Stratt's appearance. She doesn't have the lipstick, sleek bun, pencil skirt (or even pantsuit), and heels look that is so often the uniform of female characters in similar roles. She doesn't wear makeup (as much as any other actor). She wears her hair down or in the simplest ten-second buns. She wears softs, easy to move in clothes that are weather appropriate. Why would she spend extra time making her physical body less efficient?
PHM characters as text posts: Pt. 4/?
Part 3 -> Part 5
rocky's crew dying from radiation exposure, something humans go to great lengths to prevent and are very scared of and grace's crew dying in their "sleep" with nobody watching, something eridians go to great lengths to prevent and are very scared of. cool book that is easy to read through your tears.
things in phm that really tickled me as a marine biologist:
the concept of star-eating microbes causing a crisis and the solution being the introduction of space wolves to space yellowstone to control the space elk population. i love a good trophic cascade
dr ryland grace immediately pitching "turn the spaceship into a giant centrifuge to generate gravity" and then not balancing his actual centrifuge later on
the entire "life is reason" scene really
grace forgetting to open the mystery alien container in a fume hood AND immediately sticking his nose in it. if we did this in chemistry lab we were executed on the spot
academia drama being one of the cornerstones of grace's character
grace switching through every spectrum setting on the microscope to try to see into the astrophages and not being able to (relatable)
also: the astrophage dying and grace going "ohhh it died..." (very relatable)
grace having his not-scientist buddy Carl to give him frank solutions when he's overthinking. yes, often the solution is just to put the box in another box
copious duct tape usage
just sticking a filter into the path of the petrova line to collect astrophage goop
eva going "so it's alive" when grace tells them the astrophage are moving, and him being like "WELL ok that could be for a lot of reasons" in the tone of someone who doesn't even know where to start explaining why that's a hasty assumption
grace referring to the first new astrophage as his and carl's baby multiple times (HIGHLY relatable)
humanity's greatest hope being a teacher. humanity being saved by grace's ability to find novel ways to communicate well with others -- something that made him excellent as an educator, and enabled him to bond with rocky
Origin of Bear by Nina Pommelin
Where was broad-forehead born, was honey-paws produced? Born in the sky aloft, on the horns of the moon, on the head of the sun, on the Seven starsβ back. Fire shot in flashes from the sky, on a wheel the world turned around, while broad-forehead being formed. From there was he let down to earth, on the edge of the forest-fort, in the home of the golden wilderness.
*
The bear was arguably the most important and respected animal to ancient Finns, essentially considered a deity. It was believed that humans were descendants of this deity; they both ate the same food, could stand on two feet, and shared the same wisdom and emotional intelligence.
The bear was said to have come from the sky. When it set foot on earth it was warned not to ever harm humans. But it did, and as a punishment the bear was beheaded and sent back to the sky. This is the origin story of the Big Dipper constellation.
Painted in ink, white poster color and gold medium on 300 g/sqm Lanaquarelle 100% cotton hot press watercolour paper. The painting is unframed.

i like to imagine the eridians having similar conversations that we're having about their alien
more of a vibe than anything
grace, who has been alone for five minutes: oh my god. an alien! im not alone anymore! i hope he wants to be friends :)
rocky, coming up on 50 years of solitude, imprinting on grace in ways baby ducklings can only dream of: if you leave me to sleep where i can't watch your heart beat i am blowing up this tunnel with us both in it
free fic idea up for grabs. godspeed
i know we just met but iβve been thinking about you my whole life
