Finally got to see Encanto this week, and as someone who works with kids under 10, I can promise you the Madrigal kids did a LOT of dumb shit with their powers growing up. And also did the usual weird kid stuff, but weirder ‘cause they have magic powers.
Please imagine the following:
Six-year-old Dolores having dinner with the family. She pauses and tilts her ear toward the window. There’s a lull in the conversation and she asks, “Mamá, what’s a quickie?”
“CAMILO! Stop pretending to be an adult so you can get alcohol!”
Julieta’s working in the kitchen. She sees Luisa running past the window at top speed, carrying a rocking horse over her head with 2-year-old Mirabel riding it. Julieta drops her pitcher running outside to stop them.
Dolores: “Mom! Camilo keeps calling me estupida!”
Camilo: *inaudible*
Dolores: “YOU DID TOO! I CAN HEAR YOU, ESTUPIDO!”
Pepa: *thunder intensifies*
Bruno hears a commotion from the nursery and opens the door. The kids immediately freeze and stare back at him, clearly in the act of throwing fistfuls of flowers. There are flowers covering everything, petals and pollen floating to the ground. The kids are wearing sheets and pillowcases instead of clothing. Bruno closes the door.
Dolores listening to her tía’s pregnant belly with wide eyes and describing all the sounds to Isabela and Luisa. Julieta asks “Why don’t you go tell your mother what her baby sounds like?” and Dolores replies “I did. She started raining.”
Two identical Antonios run up to Felix
Camilo: “One of us only tells lies, the other only tells the truth.”
Antonio: “Ask us only one question or you’re doomed!”
“LUISA! Put your sister down!”
Abuela sitting alone on the porch with a cup of coffee. Hears arguing from upstairs. Sighs and says “Dolores, go tell your cousins I said to stop or nobody’s getting flan tonight.”
Mirabel pretending she’s allergic to Isabela whenever she’s annoyed with her.
The adults and Dolores are sitting in the living room quietly. Dolores looks up from her book, listens for a moment, and says, “Mirabel and Camilo are going to see who can jump off the highest branch in the tree by the river.” There’s a pause, then every adult runs out of the house.
“So help me, Camilo, if you turn into a zombie to scare your brother one more time…!”
Augustín: “Okay, does anyone wanna tell me how the donkey got on the roof?”
Kids: *avoid eye contact*
Augustín: “Luisa?”
Luisa: *covered in hay* Uh…….it was Isabela.
Dolores: “Señor Rivera is a horse.”
Isabela: “No, he’s not.”
Dolores: “Is too! Señora Rivera called him a pot-bellied stallion last night and asked him for a ride.”
Bruno: “…have we tried earplugs yet? Like really good earplugs??”
“LUISA! Put that tree down!”
“MOOOM! Camilo’s copying me!”
Pepa and Felix give up on telling Antonio he can’t bring all of his animals to church and compromise by letting him bring only one each week.
The kids lose Mirabel playing hide-and-seek outside and because she’s the oldest, Isabela has to go inside and tell all the adults and she opens that announcement with “Hey, uh…remember Mirabel?”
