Here’s the thing to remember about anti-racist book lists:
Read these, yes. But then read books that were not written as treatises on racism. Seek out Black art not only because it can teach you something about race but because Black people are simply doing extraordinary work.
Read Morrison as much for her prose and her mastery of pacing as for her politics. Read Ross Gay’s Book of Delights, an ode to little wonders and a reminder to look at the world with gratitude. Read Elizabeth Alexander’s stunning testament to grief and marriage, The Light of the World, and note the innovations in form as she mixes memoir with poetry and recipes, a collage meant to mirror her late husband’s paintings. Read NK Jemisin’s The Fifth Season and marvel at the worlds she builds.
Just a small reminder. Black art does not exist solely to educate non-Black people. Always be expanding your horizons.
In the midst of all of this people gloss over who filmed George, a young black girl named Darnella Frazier who is traumatized and been bullied ever since. Here is the description which was written by her mother and the GoFundMe is run by her:
DONATE
I didnt even know poor girl WAS a girl. So many news sites and place kept calling her a woman and grown. WHY THE FUCK IS THE MEDIA NEVER ALLOWING OUR BLACK CHILDREN INNOCENCE?😡😡😡

“if you’re going to protest, please watch this. we are the techie side of tik tok, this is how to secure your devices and identity while protesting.
1. do not post on social media about your attendance of your whereabouts. do not click ‘attending’ on facebook events. cops go through these to make arrests weeks to months after protests. 2. download the signal app to communicate with your friends. they encrypt your messages and automatically delete them after a certain period of time. (3.) disable location services on all of your apps, most of them track you in the background. but don’t put your phone totally on airplane mode so that you can still be reached by your friends. (4.) disable the fingerprint or facial id lock on your phone, use passcode only. cops have been known to force people to unlock their phone using these methods. (5.) write the number of the aclu or a local lawyer who is supporting protesters on your skin in case your phone dies or gets confiscated. do not write the number of anybody you know that can be used to track them and you. (6.) wear a face mask to protect against the virus and against facial recognition software. cover any distinguishing tattoos or features including special hair colors, etc. also blur these features out of the videos that you post of your fellow protesters to protect them too. not just their faces, these features. leave your phone locked when filming and taking pictures. wipe metadata from your photos by screenshotting and posting the screenshots.”
