sit tight and let me tell you a story.

when that seed was planted by a gardener, or by random chance, that tree’s destiny was already sown. it was to become the most famous tree of all its family.

all its ancestor trees were never so well known… there was a great-great grandmother tree who was once proposed under, one lovely afternoon - and abe lincoln once admired a distant ancestor in another part of the country - but that was before he was president, so it doesn’t really count.

and so this little tree grew up with no idea what it would become…… the most hated tree on the planet

despised by voyeurs from every nation

and yet, its sole, innocent purpose - besides exhaling oxygen so one misha collins and jensen ackles had air to breathe while canoodling - was to block the view and shield what was (perhaps) a tentative first-ever cheek kiss, from the hungry eyes of millions.

all the tree’s ancestors are very proud.

and frankly? misha and jensen probably don’t mind this tree either. because who knows what full-view publicity so early in their relationship would have done to alter the course of true love. especially when jensen was so nervous and shy, and always more so around misha.

this tree will live happily ever after, whether we all hate it or not - because it had a destiny, and it fulfilled it in 30 glorious seconds. and now, post-censorship (censor-ship, if you will), it has a new purpose - be the best tree it can possibly be. it will grow new leaves every spring, and sleep, dormant, every winter. and it lives every day remembering what a good tree it is, and how well it did on its big day.

maybe its children will also be the protective guardians of private first kisses. the saviours of budding relationships, which have not yet had a chance to blossom in their own sweet spring-time. knights, perhaps: firmly rooted in their quests to let strangers’ young love bear fruit before the fall.

they are protector trees. these trees exist among us, standing tall in our world.

and if you look outside…? perhaps, if you’re very lucky, you might notice a tree that has shielded you from some experience you never intended to be a part of. bird poop, perhaps. or a gross pervert who enjoys open windows. or maybe a tree simply kept you from being battered by an eager wind, or stung raw by the summer sun.

never forget that each and every tree is here on this planet for a reason, just like you.

Well based on that excellent episode from Davy Perez, Sam’s endgame should be getting out of hunting, which let’s face it, he’s always wanted to do. His heart isn’t in it, as narrated for us via the body-parts auction, which, in selling his heart to the monsters tells us Sam’s heart needs to be rescued from them/ the Life. 

And Dean’s endgame should be hunting with Castiel by his side. Because what wasn’t possible for Donna (as her romantic partner couldn’t handle the monster-hunting life) IS possible for Dean. Cas knows all about monsters, and has already promised to go to death and the ends of the earth with Dean.  

But will the show really separate the brothers in this way at the end? 

It would be healthy for them, as characters - the perfect character development for each of them.  

Of course, they would still be close. 

Dean and Cas would visit Sam’s place all the time. 

Sam would be a kind of Bobby on the side, with the lore books, but he’d also have a regular job, as a teacher or a lawyer, helping kids who are having a rough home life in particular.

A/N - so I was hoping to finish this off completely before tonight’s episode, but I have company coming and clearly that isn’t going to happen. I’m so sorry! I’m leaving off in what I think is an appropriate place though, and it’s more than twice as long as the other chapters, and there will be just one final (happy, fluffy) chapter after this, so I hope I’m forgiven! When Castiel wakes, he’s alone, and in pitch darkness. He flinches instinctively before he remembers himself. He closes his eyes anyway, refusing to let fear get the better of him, trying to concentrate his breathing so he can focus on what little information he can glean from his limited senses.

He’s ashamed to admit that Ketch took him by surprise, overpowered him easily. Dean had been gone for longer than Cas thought normal, and he’d followed to the bathroom where he’d barely had time to process Dean’s unconscious form, slumped and bleeding on the floor, before he registered the face of Arthur Ketch standing in wait.

“Hello, angel,” Ketch had said, before slugging Cas across the temple with the butt of his gun.

It’s the last thing he remembers.

He can smell something metallic, taste it in his mouth. He’s bleeding, he realizes. Probably from where Ketch hit him with the gun, based on the primary source of his pain.

“Dean?” Cas whispers now, hushed. He listens for a response, but it’s only a formality. He’s certain that Ketch would have kept them in separate rooms.

He’s also relatively certain that Dean’s alive, that Ketch would have kept him alive, at least for now.

Castiel tests his restraints. The cuffs are uncomfortably tight, and his fingers scrabble for purchase, but there’s nothing he can grab onto. Ketch has done his job well.

He exhales slowly, feeling lightheaded.

He has no powers, and he definitely isn’t going to escape based on sheer strength.

He needs to think.

He needs a plan.

He needs it fast.
