Phil later on confirmed that totems don’t prevent you from dying, but that they bring you back to life. That means Techno did in fact die on the day on his execution. It might be because of this brief dance with death or because of Philza's immortality or Wilbur's passing, but one thing is clear: Technoblade is undeniably afraid of dying.

It explains why he spends so much time gathering resources and totems of undying despite already having plenty. It explains why Tommy's reconciliation with Tubbo hurt him so much. Not because he didn’t see it coming — Tommy was always very clear about still loving Tubbo and wanting to make amends with him — but because he felt vulnerable having so many armed people, all willing to kill Techno, surrounding him. It explains the genuine fear he felt when Sapnap almost killed him during Doomsday. He has down to two hearts. One more hit and Technoblade would’ve lost his first canon life.

However, Techno was willing to give his life for Phil if it meant he would be ok. If it meant he would be safe and fine and happy. “Phil! Phil, what did they do to you?!” is such a powerful line, but the phrase that follows is even more raw. “You leave him alone! Just take me!”. I love you so much that I will do whatever it takes for you to be ok, even if it means I’m not around to see it happen. I know that Techno would technically still be alive, but that doesn’t matter. In the same way Friend having infinite canon lives didn’t matter to Ghostbur. It goes way beyond that.
