Okay I'm rewatching Daredevil s3 and there's a question I've been wanting to ask. Is Poindexter an accurate representation of Borderline Personality Disorder?
Because I do not have BPD but I know a fair amount about it based on what I've heard from people online and their experiences as well as their reasonings for headcanoning characters such as Jinx from Arcane or Blitzo from Helluva Boss as having BPD. And Dex doesn't seem to portray any real signs of having BPD but again I can't be sure.
Like what's really getting me is the scene with kid Dex and his therapist. Dex admits that killing his coach wasn't an accident and that he feels no guilt/remorse for what he's done. And immediately after he says this his therapist writes down on her clipboard, "BPD with psychopathic tendencies". Obviously no hate to those who struggle with/have low empathy, but I don't think that's a defining indicator/trait of BPD?
Also, his therapist talks to him about how he's "surrounded by all of this emptiness". I know emptiness is a part of BPD but I thought that was regarding self identity and how they see themselves as a person. But in this scene they're talking about it in regards to Dex's struggles with empathy and emotions.
To me, the way Dex behaves seems more aligned with Antisocial Personality Disorder. But again I'm not an expert on this shit and that's why I'm asking.
i actually think dex is a really strong and nuanced representation of borderline personality disorder. he was diagnosed young, and while that’s one of the few inaccuracies, since bpd typically isn’t formally diagnosed until early adulthood, it’s not unrealistic to believe he was already developing the disorder by age 12, especially given the extreme trauma and emotional neglect he experienced so early on. in dex’s case, the writers likely used the diagnosis at that age as a storytelling device to clearly communicate what kind of mental illness he was struggling with.
when dr. mercer wrote down that dex had borderline personality disorder and psychopathic tendencies, it wasn’t just because he showed no remorse for what he’d done. it was also because of the drastic way his perception of coach bradley shifted. after years of seeing bradley as a safe, supportive father figure, dex immediately viewed him as “bad” and untrustworthy the moment he felt rejected, when he was benched during the game. this is a textbook example of splitting, a term used in bpd to describe the inability to hold both positive and negative feelings about a person at the same time. people with bpd can idealize someone one moment and devalue them the next, often triggered by feelings of abandonment or betrayal. it’s not manipulation, it’s an emotional survival mechanism, and in dex’s case, it had devastating consequences.
you see the core traits of bpd all over how dex moves through the world. his intense fear of abandonment, unstable sense of self, emotional dysregulation, black and white thinking, impulsivity, and the way he forms attachments way too quickly and intensely like with julie, fisk and even later, with matt. he doesn’t know how to exist without someone anchoring him, and when he loses that anchor, his world collapses.
the most important thing is this dex is not a villain because he has bpd. the show never frames his diagnosis as the source of his violence. his bpd helps explain how he views the world and relationships, but it doesn’t make him evil. what pushed him to the edge was a lifetime of being hurt, used, manipulated, and failed, over and over again. and that’s what makes the representation actually pretty decent. it’s not perfect, but it doesn’t reduce him to a stereotype. he’s written as a person with mental illness, not a person who is his mental illness. his struggles are real, but they’re not his moral failings. it’s grounded, it’s human, and that’s what makes it work.
