I'm standing on the broad wooden deck of a seaside restaurant, at a cocktail party, when a wall of water rises up on the other side of the rail. I wait, rooted in place, for the massive wave to crash across the deck and sweep us all to our deaths. It rises and rises, ten stories up, twenty stories. I see schools of fish, octopuses, squids, turtles and sharks and jellyfish, and a great blue whale that fills my view. The wave keeps rising, right in front of me, close enough to touch, nothing between me and doom but an inexplicably unbreaking surface tension. Awe pushes out fear. To render this properly, I'd need a sheet of paper twenty stories tall. Three feet by two is the best I can do at the moment. #art #artistsoninstagram #watercolor #ink #bluewhale #wallofwater

Before and after. My great-grandmother's holiday rolls. They're a lot of work - nearly a 24-hour process - but the connection I feel to my family history while I make them would make it worthwhile even if the deliciousness didn't. Mixing up the dough in the very bowls she used when my grandfather was a child, kneading it down as she did, rolling out each batch as she did, spiralling in butter cinnamon sugar raisins as she did, watching them bake up as she did, I feel in my hands the memory of my great-grandmother, who must have learned to make them from her mother or grandmother as a child in Ireland before getting on a boat, still a teenager, to travel across the ocean for a new life. I never met her, but this bit of her legacy has passed to me through my great-aunt and then my aunt, an unbroken chain of Fitzgerald holidays and next-morning breakfasts with tea and jam going back 100 years or more.
