In spite of herself, Janis had always harbored some lingering fantasy that one day Regina would confess her undying love and come out for her. It had started with a hopeful wish in sixth grade that Regina would make everything right. Then her hopes for Regina fell, and fell, and fell, so that by junior year it was really just kind of a fucked up erotic revenge fantasy. But on some level, that fantasy was always there.

Then, in senior year, her fantasy came true, and it kind of ruined her life. Because when it came true, it came true for Cady Heron.

"Huh?"

She leaned forward a little. "Plenty of people hate it at these big tech companies and only come here because it looks so good on a resume. And, like, plenty more get here and find out they hate it and can't wait to leave. But if you don't stay at least a year, you have to pay back your signing bonus, which obviously blows. So you stay for one year and one day and then you bail. It happens all the time, we call it working your one plus one."

Cady blinked. "That's a thing?"

"Totally." Regina slid closer on the couch until her knee was touching Cady's, and looked intensely into her eyes. "I'm gonna make sure you have, like, the best one plus one. And then you can go back to your boyfriend in Chicago or whatever."

Regina George was never supposed to be reaped. Cady Heron was never supposed to be remembered. Together, they'll create a love story so compelling that Panem will never forget.

Regina- godsdamned- George; the pretty, perfect daughter of Aphrodite. The queen bee of camp. Cady Heron’s fatal flaw.

Of course the daughter of Athena would never admit that, ever.

Cady perched in a tree, with an arrow knocked just in case someone found the flag. Silently praying that Damien or Janis would find the other team’s flag first.

Regina sauntered over, every bit the daughter of love.

Perfect, beautiful, terrifying.

Cady watched her, Regina’s lackeys: Karen and Gretchen following her. Karen was a daughter of Dionysus and Gretchen was a daughter of Tyche (whuch was ironic considering that anyone in the general vicinity of Gretchen Weiners should be considered unlucky).

Regina ploughed her way through Cady’s team: her rose-gold staff ,because of course Regina would’ve found a way to make celestial bronze pink, swinging it as if it was no more than a huge ribbon.

“That side Gretchen! No not like that, Karen!” Regina barked out orders like a true general, anyone who said that the children of Aphrodite were weak-willed were sorely mistaken.

Regina was now within ten feet of the flag and Kevin G was struggling to hold the relentless blows back. He got hit and tripped into his back and Cady made her split second decision…

She jumped from the tree, bending her knees to stop the full force of impact as she’d been taught. With full force, she knocked an arrow, it wizzed past Regina’s ear, making her look at her.

Cady grabbed Kevin G’s sword (despite his ridiculous objections), dropped her bow and faced Regina.

But she didn’t look cocky or determined. She laughed, “I’m pretty sure it’s not good etiquette to stab your girlfriend”

Cady couldn’t, even if she wanted to ur was against the rules, “I’m not- I wouldn’t. What ?!”

“Hey you want a fight, I’ll give you a fight,”

She lifted up her staff and lunged at Cady who jumped away and swiped at Regina’s legs, gaining a blow and knocking Regina to the side.

Now I’ve knocked her off her feet literally and metaphorically, she thought

Regina jeered at her; it was equal parts teasing and equal parts flirty and Cady just knew Regina was trying to distract her. Cady didn’t want to admit it was working.

Cady went for a final swing but Regina used her staff and managed to disarm Cady and knocked her to the floor- Regina held the point of her staff to Cady’s chest as she straddled her.

“I win,” she panted, grinning, “And it’s because you got distracted and now I can-“ Regina stood up and Cady turned to see her walking over to the flag.

Cheers echoed across the woods.

Cady laughed and clapped her hands as Kevin G helped her and her teammates up. Janis was carried into the clearing being carried by Aaron and Damien and it was all Cady could do to not laugh at the expression Regina had.

She turned over to her, “Don’t worry about it Regina.”
