I’m an incoming freshman and I just signed up for jrotc. Do you have any advice?

Definitely join a team if you can. I found a nice group of friends and mentors on the drill team, but any other team has a good group of people too. It all depends on what your interested in.

Also, freshman year is about working on your leadership and confidence, so focus on growing your potential because next year (that is if you stay) your probably going to hold a leadership position and you’ll have people looking up to you for advice. I’d say find yourself a good mentor that can help you out, and train you up.

Other than that, have fun and be open to all the opportunities the program gives you!

My team got 3rd place overall and I got 1st overall individual and I have earned my place to compete at Navy Nationals! I’m just so excited that I can’t stop posting this wherever I can!

just got back from a very emotional awards ceremony. eight of our seniors are enlisting, five marine, two air force, and one army. one girl is going to the naval academy and one guy is going to the air force academy, two girls are joining air force rotc in college. one guy is going to medical school, another is off to be a welder. one girl is going to be an apprentice to an artist in new york, another is marrying her fiancé who enlisted in the marines last year. one girl is moving to paris and one guy is going to be a missionary in africa. we’re all going our separate ways, but this is what jrotc is all about. a group of teens from all backgrounds and all paths of life who are going to make the world a better place, one step at a time. i’ll miss them so much but it’s their time to shine, and as tx-20011 cadets, they’re gonna shine brighter than all the stars in the sky ❤️

I’m sitting here going through old photos and feeling nostalgic. I keep wondering if other cadets had the same guidance and insight I had before I joined the core. If I could give any cadet advice this is what I’d say:

Put your uniform together three days before you must wear it.Getting your name tag perfect is hard, so why struggle more than needed? If you don’t sweat very much and you’re able to go through a day without getting food/dirt/grime on your shirt, don’t wash it; re-wear it a few times. Shine your shoes, then shine them again. Shoe shining is one of the most therapeutic things there is. I promise you, I’m not kidding about it being therapeutic. If you want a shine that lasts a while and just looks brilliant melt your polish before you apply it. then let it dry. Buff it with a horse hair brush. Finish it off by either spitting on it or sprinkling some water and buffing with tights. SHINE YOUR ENTIRE SHOE AND NOT JUST THE FREAKING TIP! Learn EVERY DRILL MOVEMENT. You should know how to day a counter, hand salute, and how to go to sling arms. Show your SASI, ASI and cadet officers respect, especially the cadet officers. The jobs they have are hard and time consuming. Learn your chain of command and always use the proper channels. If you’re a girl avoid having your hair layered. It’ll make putting it up easier. Bobby pins are your friend! Be confident about your uniform. Lastly, get involved. Join drill team or raider team or rocketry club! volunteer to help plan/decorate military ball. Invest time in other cadets. The bonds you make in that room last. xoxo

Alaina Petty was a passionate member of her JROTC program “She would always make sure her uniform was just perfect, not because she had to, but because she cared that much” Alaina’s enduring passion for the class did not go unnoticed, as she was promoted to sergeant, the highest rank a freshman could receive and was awarded Cadet of the Month during the second quarter.

“She came in with such professionalism, such curiosity… both in and out of uniform. From the moment she walked into the room she was destined to be a leader in the program… she was more than a participating cadet, she wanted to do everything,” Major Peter Mahmood said.

From then on the whole class would joke that Alaina would most certainly end up as the battalion commander by her senior year, commanding over the entirety of the program as the highest rank a high schooler could achieve.
