One of the most interesting things mentioned by the creators of BES is how they wanted Mizu and Taigen to be opposites in many aspects, finding in each other what they lack themselves.

This contrast is also reflected in how they enjoy food.

If you rewatch the series closely, you'll notice that Mizu hardly enjoys food. For her, eating is simply a necessity to survive. She always eats quickly, without enjoying the moment or showing any interest.

The only time we learn about her culinary preferences is when Mikio mentions that she likes dried mackerel.

Perhaps in her happier days, Mizu allowed herself to enjoy food more, but it seems to be another pleasure she now denies herself.

This contrasts greatly with Taigen, who has several interactions where it's clear he thoroughly enjoys food:

-In his first appearance as an adult, in the exchange he has with Akemi, he brings her a candy.

-Upon finding out that he is engaged to Akemi, he goes to celebrate at the brothel with his friends, having a grand banquet.

-When he sees Ringo cooking, he shows interest in what he is cooking and even starts to smell the ingredients.

-Later, after spending a few days with Ringo and Mizu, we know he loves Ringo's food so much that he wants to hire him in his kitchens. He happily shares this while eating an onigiri made by Ringo.

-When he meets with Heiji, even in serius situation, he can't resist trying the bean cakes, keeping the tray on his lap.

-When Mizu and he are at the Sword Father's house, he brings her some gyoza to cheer her up, wanting to share something he enjoys with her.

I think Taigen has a lot to learn from Mizu, but this ability to enjoy the little things in life is something Mizu should learn from him.

It's true that Taigen is an idiot, but I find this trait of his quite charming and positive. I believe it brings out the best in him, as he initially judged Mizu for scavenging in his trash for food, but ended up sharing with her his favorite from Kohama.
