Another #FlashbackFriday, another look at some crocheted blankies. (Mostly written up before the latest contretemps with my son.)
Son graduated college (B.A. in Philosophy) in 2020, so of course I decided a commemorative blanket was appropriate. Using some leftover Cascade 220 Superwash, I crocheted up a test square, blocked it to 6”x6” (15cm x 15 cm), weighed it in grams, multiplied it by 169 (13 squares x 13 squares), and added a few balls for the edge. (Lots and lots of math in there.)
Next: I don’t know why I let him pick the colors - usually I don’t give people any choice, hahahaha - and sent him to the yarn dot com website to look at Cascade 220 Superwash colors. (My local yarn store had closed by then, 😭😭, plus it was C19 times.) These are the two colors he chose:
My daughter was confused. “Why did he pick ‘Joker’ colors?” Son replied that he was going for “Hulk” colors and texted a comic book photo of Bruce Banner all greenly Hulk’ed, clad in fetching purple pants.
“I don’t care what he says,” responded Daughter; “to me it’s always going to be The Janket.” (Nice portmanteau word coinage! “Joker” + “blanket” = “Janket.”)
Although the Lime Sherbet order came right away, I had to wait several weeks for the Purple Hyacinth to show up. Hmph. But it finally did, and here are the first two columns:
There was a definite system:
Crochet 13 squares according to the chart (I designed it all myself)
Stitch the 13 squares into a column
After another column was crocheted, blocked, and stitched together, attach it (single crochet) to the main body

Next came a “janket” for my daughter (even though she is not a college grad), but in these colors (from a favorite “Kamen Rider”):
It was exactly the same pattern and size, and took approximately the same amount of time:
The first time I babysat the grandcats, I gave the original Janket a test - slept underneath it (and only it) for a few nights. How warm was it? “Not very.” I even woke up a couple of times from being too cold. Hmph again.
However, here is the ultimate endorsement, from Guzy the cat:
My younger sister opined, “That’s Guzy’s blanket now. You’ll have to crochet another one for (Son).”
Look for the helpers, and believe women.
