Some days, you deserve a medal for getting out of bed.
Grounding
WHAT IS GROUNDING?
Grounding is a set of simple strategies to  detach from emotional pain for example (cravings, self harm urges, emotional eating behaviour etc.) Grounding can also be a way of returning your attention to the outside world and away from yourself. In the case of dissociation.
WHY PRACTICE GROUNDING TECHNIQUES?
When you are overwhelmed with emotional pain, you need a way to detach so that you can gain control over your feelings and stay safe. As long as you are grounding, you are more likely to be able to overcome urges. Grounding âanchorsâ you to reality.
Many people with PTSD and dissociative disorders struggle with either feeling too much (overwhelming emotions and memories) or too little (numbing and dissociation). In grounding, you attain balance between the twoâconscious of reality and ability to tolerate it.
GUIDELINES:
§ Grounding can be done any time, anywhere and no one has to know.
¡      §  Use grounding when you are: faced with a trigger, having a flashback or dissociating.
¡      §  Keep your eyes open, look around the room, and make sure the light is good to stay in touch with the present.
¡      §  Rate your mood before and after to test whether it worked. Before grounding, rate your level of
¡      §  emotional pain, or your level of dissociation. Then re-rate it afterwards. Has it gone down?
¡      Try not to make judgements or think negatively. The idea is to distract from the negatives.
¡      §  Stay neutralâno judgments of good or bad.
¡      §  Focus on the present, not the past or future.
¡      §  Grounding is much more active than relaxation exercises and focuses your attention.
Grounding is deemed to be a better way of coping with PTSD and dissociative disorders than relaxation practice. As during relaxation the focus is too much within the body, which at the worst may bring on flashbacks.
WAYS TO GROUND
MENTAL GROUNDING
o  ⣠ Describe to yourself in detail your surroundings: For example âThe walls are white, there are three pink chairs and a blue sofa. There is a picture of a brown border collie on the wall with a gold frame around it.â You can do this out loud if appropriate, or in your head if you are in public.
o  ⣠ Play a game like âScattergoriesâ in your head or with a friend or family member. Choose a letter of the alphabet and try and come up with as many examples of a category you choose as you can. For example C ⌠Boys names: Christopher, Curtis, Carl, Charles etc.
o  ⣠ Do an age progression. IThis can be particularly useful if you have dissociated or regressed to a younger alter or state. For example in my experiences I have an alter who is three. So I might say⌠Now I am four, I am at home with Mummy and Daddy and I can do (an example of an age appropriate activity) alone. Work your way up until you are back to your current age. This may not always work for little alters, but can help.
o  ⣠ Describe an everyday activity in great detail. For example if you like gardening âI open the shed door and pull out the lawn mower, I connect it to a power supply and climb on. I turn the key and put it into driveâŚ.â
o  ⣠ Imagine. For example make up a nice little story in your head, or out loud. âI am putting some roller skates on, and I am slowly gliding away from all my emotional suffering down a beautiful smooth lane, having fun listening to my favourite music LOUD!â
o  ⣠ Say a safety statement. âMy name is _________; I am safe right now. I am in the present, not the past. I am in _____________ the date is _____________.
¡      ⣠ Read something, saying each word to yourself. Or read each letter backwards so that you focus or the letters and not on the meaning of words.
¡      ⣠ Use humour: For example have a âFunny Memory Bankâ where you store up your favourite witty moments for those detached, rainy days. Â
¡      ⣠ Count to 100 or say the alphabet very slowly or very fast.
¡      ⣠ Repeat something meaningful to yourself, such as a prayer or quote. For example you could use the Serenity Prayer.
PHYSICAL GROUNDING
Ăť Run cool or warm water over your hands.
Ăť Â Grab tightly onto your chair as hard as you can.
¡      Ý  Touch various objects around you: a pen. keys, your clothing, the table, the walls. Pay close attention to colours, weights, textures etc.
¡      Ý  Firmly stamp your feet on the floor, literally grounding yourself. Feel the tension of your feet against the pressure of the floor.
¡      Ý  Carry a ground object in your pocketâa small object such as a rock, stone, crystal, bead, piece of string or cloth, or a stress ball that you can touch whenever you feel triggered.
¡      Ý  Jump up and down.
¡      Ý  Stretch reach upwards and pull yourself tall. Extend your arms, legs, fingers and toes.
¡      Ý  Walk slowly, noticing each footstep.
¡      Ý  Eat something yummy. Notice the flavours, textures and feelings that come up for you.
SOOTHING GROUNDING
¡      ⼠ Use Cheerleading statements, as if you were talking to a small child. For example âYou are having a difficult time adjusting to these chanes, but you are doing so well. You should be proud of yourself.â
¡      ⼠ Think of favorites. Think of your favorite color, animal, season, food, time of day, TV show.
¡      ⼠ Picture people you care about. Even get a photobook made of positive pictures or pictures of people you love! Such a simple nice way to ground, and you can get A4 photo books at the moment from GroupOn for under £7!! (I in no way endorse them I just thought it was a good offer!)
¡      ⼠ Remember the words to an inspiring song, quotation or poem that you like or feel positively about. Maybe write out the words and decorate it for your wall.
¡      ⼠ Remember a safe place. Describe a place that you find very soothing it could be when you went on holiday to the beach, or walking in the woods. Or just a time you felt safe and peaceful at home in your living room or in bed.
¡      ⼠ Plan out a safe treat for yourself, such as a trip to a coffee shop with a friend, making a nice dinner or a bath with some nice toiletries or candles if you feel safe to use them
¡      ⼠ Think of things you are looking forward to in the next week. Perhaps schedule your time so you build some structure for chores and pleasurable activities. It can help to know what you are doing and also not just sit at home with nothing to do. This can cause difficulties.
WHAT IF GROUNDING DOESNâT WORK?
â Practice as often as possible. Even when you donât feel overwhelmed or dissociative. This way it will come more naturally to you when you are struggling.
â Practice faster. Speeding up the pace gets you focused on the outside world quickly. â Try grounding for a Ioooong time 20 mins at least, and then repeat !! â Try to notice whether you do better with physical or mental or soothing grounding.
â Create your own methods of grounding. Any method you make up may be worth much more than those you read here because it is yours.
â Start grounding early in a negative mood cycle. Start when you begin to feel the early warning signs of dissociation or when you have just started having a flashback.
This is for another mental illness, but I think a lot of these could help when youâre in a picking or pulling spiral.

November 1: I have no energy to do anything other than work, come home lay on the couch and watch tv and knit. I want to have energy to go and exercise, to hang out with friends, to enjoy life but Iâve found recently that Iâm just waiting for this day to end, then the next day to end and accomplishing nothing in those days. Iâm started medical school in February and am scared that if this continues I wonât be able to cope. November 3: I wrote that when I was feeling pretty down and exhausted. I just left in drafts since I didnât necessarily want to share my sorrows. Now even though I just got off a night shift this morning I had a great day. I did little things like do laundry and have a shower. But I was also able to accomplish big things like exercise, going on a 4 hour hike, the first exercise Iâve done in over a month! They all seem like small insignificant things but theyâve made me feel so great that I was able to do something other than watch tv in bed in my free time. For about a month I was feeling like I was just wasting my life away but things do eventually get better! :) this too shall pass
Hello! Have you (or anyone else) used a Tangle or Figet to help avoid picking? I'd like to try one but I'm not sure how helpful they are; I'd like to hear from some people which ones worked and why. I have trich (eyebrows/eyelashes) as well as derm (everywhere all the time) and since both of them are such different sensations I'm not sure how successful one of these toys would be for me.
Tangles are one of the most popular fiddles! Spinner rings can also help â they provide an alternate repetitive behavior, and, while they may not stop you from picking or pulling, they can help. Maybe some others can tell us what their favorite fiddles are and why?Â
I use a tangle but sometimes the urge to pick is accompanied with wanting to feel the sensation of picking skin so I use a fidget for your digit which I love. It is a lot more sensory than a tangle and it keeps my fingers busy. I also knit whenever I watch tv to keep my hands busy and productive. Also if I'm going out and don't want to have to carry my tangle I wear a loom bands bracelet and play with that. I'm able to stretch it and twist my fingers up in it so I don't pick.

What are BFRBs? Body-focused repetitive behaviors, including trichotillomania and skin picking disorder, affect at least 2-4% of the population. Much more than a bad âhabit,â the psychological impact of BFRBs can be severe, including intense feelings of shame, isolation, and loss of control. But there is nothing to be ashamed of â BFRBs are neuro-biological disorders, and genetics plays a role in their development. Share this post if you believe BFRBs are under-recognized and misunderstood - no one should suffer alone. âŞ#âBFRB⏠week Find âŞ#âtrichotillomania⏠âŞ#âskinpickingdisorder⏠info @ www.trich.org
This infographic was created by Task Force member Nicole for #BFRBweek! Great job, Nicole!
If you need help explaining what a #BFRB is⌠share this handy umbrella around to educate others & spread awareness!Â
Why are you raising awareness?
FYI
Who is affected and when does it typically develop?
Most BFRBs begin in early puberty/adolescence and many continue into adulthood. In childhood both males and females are affected equally, but in adulthood more females are seemingly affected. Anyone can be affected by a BFRB.
Why do I pull or pick?
Research indicates these behaviours are possibly related to genetics/ environmental causes, but there is no concrete answer yet as to why people begin these behaviours. The symptoms are not personality traits or something that a person can just âsnap out ofâ or stop.
I think my child has a BFRB, what should I do?
First and foremost, be there to support your child and NEVER punish them for the behaviour. Although it may seem like a good deterrent, BFRBs are a group of disorders, not just bad behaviour that can be solved by punishment. Keep in mind that your child very likely doesnât want to pick or pull, and is probably ashamed of the behaviour. They probably want to stop just as badly as you want them to.
Knowledge is power! Educate yourself about BFRBs and if you take your child to the doctor for the behaviour(s), bring some printed materials/ information along with you. It will take some effort, but find whatâs best for your child as they deal with their BFRB(s).
What help and/or treatments are available?
Therapies (e.g. psychotherapy, Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT))
Medication
Peer Support Groups (In person/Online)
Online Resources
My doctor has never heard of BFRBs, now what do I do?
Many doctors still arenât familiar with BFRBs and their specific needs when it comes to treatment. While there are specialists out there working to properly treat these disorders, if there isnât one in your area or that you can reach out to, be sure to go prepared with BFRB information the next time you see your doctor.
Is there a cure?
At this time, there are NO cures. If you see a website or product claiming to be a cure, the chances are that it is a fraud and it should be avoided. With treatment, BFRBs can be reduced to a minimum (although even that isnât guaranteed), but there is no cure-all to stop completely. With that being said, there ARE people who have been able to be pull/pick free for years.
