A couple things Iâve learned
just for some babes who may find them useful
1) This shit
Self-adhesive medical tape is one of my new favorite things. I wrap it around the tips of my fingers like a thimble type deal. It doesnât stick to your skin but stays on your fingers; you can type with it on, and itâs imfuckingpossible to pick while wearing it. You can get a buttload for $12 on amazon here.
2) These fuckers
Look dumb? Heck yeah they do. I use them for mirrors, âcause we all know how tricky those are. They occupy both your hands, you can twist them into shapes like the 5-year-old you are, and if both your hands are playing with it, they arenât skimming your face. You can buy three for $10 here.
3) Whatever the fuck these are
donât even know what to call them tbh; my therapist gave them to me and I use them while at the computer. You roll them around on your fingers and the spikes sting ever so slightly so be careful if you regularly pick your fingers, but the sensation replaces the sensation you might expect from picking and keeps you aware of your hands so they donât stray to your skin like the sneaky fuckers they are. You can get a pack of ten for $10 here.
Iâll update with more later on, but these are the main ones Iâve had real success with. The trick is to use them consistently around your typical trigger areas or situations where you pick the most often, so your brain learns to associate those things with the fidget and not with picking. As always, if anyone else has tricks or fidgets that really work for them, donât hesitate for a nanosecond to add on. Happy healing, you gorgeous little shits you!
I think this speaks for itself. Accepting a person doesnât mean you get to put limits on their freedom. You canât be an ally and want us to stop talking, or labeling, or demanding to be heard. Â
Acceptance has no exceptions. Period.Â

So I asked my doctor if I could get a medication for my acne and I got these pills called minocycline and they've really been clearing up my skin and as a result I've been picking less. Like I still do, I can't stop, but like it's really helping. The problem areas are still scarred but they have less acne but my forehead is completely clear. I just wanted to share this positivity because for the first time in my life I felt like I could go out without makeup and I could beat this thing!
(I havenât been able to check this in a while, so this was very nice to come back to!)
I'm so upset right now I could cry... it's been a extremely stressful week and I told myself I would not pick and I broke down last night and I picked my face and arms awfully. Now I have a large spot on my chin and it's very noticeable but I'm afraid to put a bandage on it(even around family) it's so embarrassing. Any tips on how to heal it quickly? I just need to heal my face quickly and stop doing this to myself. Thank you for being here... seeing I'm not alone really helps
Wash it, moisturize it, then leave it alone. Leeeeave it alone. Donât use drying products like antibiotics or tea tree unless it gets swollen and you think it would be appropriate.
So I've been struggling with my derma recently, and I've noticed that cleaning my face (to the point where it feels really really dry and clean) can help a little when I can feel specific spots to pick or am in front of the mirror. Is there any other info on this and is it something that tends to help people? And are there any tips on how to clean my face so much without drying it out? Thanks, ~Becca đ
A lot of people clean their face using things like olive oil, and thatâs amazing for your skin. However, if you like the dry feeling then thereâs no way to do more of that without drying out your skin more. Something that comes to mind is doing a mask that hydrates a lot, and then cleaning it, so it is moisturized but then also very clean.
are there any bfrbs associated with bodily fluids? when i self harmed i did it for the blood, not the pain, and now my skin picking on my face is almost exclusively with the intent of seeing pus come out of pimples :/
Thereâs a fine line between bfrb and self harm in terms of intent. Your thing sounds more like self harm that is done by picking, rather than picking from stress or boredom. At the same time, Iâm not entirely informed in that area. Try to notice when specifically you do the actions, and work from there
can dermatillomania also extend to scratching? i have a form of eczema on my legs, causing my skin to be very rough and bumpy. i constantly scratch at the bumps, often leading to bleeding, and then i scratch at the scabs. sometimes i scratch my legs so much i actually get hives. i also scratch my arms a lot, to the point that a classmate saw the marks and asked i was okay (she thought they were self harming scars)
if youâre scratching eczema i think that wouldnât necessarily be derma. I think if you scratch because it itches, Iâd say no. But if you scratch as like a nervous thing or when youâre stressed, then it could be. It depends why you scratch, and if itâs more scratching an itch or picking from nerves.

my picking was really bad today and now i can't sleep because my fingers hurt so badly...
Read! watch something! meditate, paint your toenails, try to not be mad at yourself! and bandaids on the fingers also tend to be an okay prevention method too.
Hi. I've not been diagnosed with dermatillomania but I think I may have it. I constantly pick at the skin on my scalp, face(mostly my forehead), chin, shoulders/arms, back and chest (I also can't stop myself from picking a scab f I have one) and now have many scars because of it. I tried to tell my counsellor about it because it's getting really, really bad but she just wrote it off as a bad habit and I want to know how to get properly diagnosed so I can get proper help for it. Please help.
Please donât give up and try to find another counselor or therapist. To get a diagnosis thatâs really important. Search online for a list of therapists near you, and it should say if they have a specialty in anxiety disorders.

The âHow are you?â checklist post -Winter Holiday Edition
⢠Donât worry, you look amazing. ⢠Drinking at a holiday party? Donât forget to have a glass of water between drinks. ⢠You do not have to drink just because itâs a celebration/holiday. Itâs okay to say ânoâ.Â
⢠Have you taken your medication? Bring a small dose with you to a gathering, just in case. **Especially anti-anxiety medication.Â
⢠Family gatherings are great and fun if youâre up for it, but theyâre not actually mandatory. If you donât feel like you can deal with a crowd/certain family members or friends, please donât pressure yourself or allow them to pressure you into being there. Stay home, pet a cat/dog, eat microwaveable mac and cheese if that feels right. You can also set a time limit for yourself. Tell them you can only stay for an hour, or just stop in to say âhelloâ. Youâre âallowedâ to look after yourself during the holidays. Itâs okay. ⢠Have you had enough sleep?
⢠Going out on a frozen lake/pond with friends? 1: Walk like a penguin. Spread your feet out, and bend your knees to lower your center of gravity. If you slip, try to protect your head. 2: ALWAYS make sure the ice is thick enough to walk on. When in doubt, only go in areas that have been checked by the authorities.Â
⢠Do you need to be alone right now? Find a bathroom or somewhere you can step away from the gathering/party to take a breather. Literally, take a few slow breaths, and take some time to yourself. ⢠Be the photographer! Hide behind the camera, and get great shots of people snorting popcorn out their nose.
⢠If you feel like youâre disassociating, try counting your fingers or looking at your finger whorls. Remember that they are unique to you, that you are real. Affirmations [basically a verbal anchor] can also help you settle the anxiety that comes from being triggered. If none of your usual techniques work, donât be afraid to ask a friend or family member to help you find a place that feel safe and comfortable for you. Also, please try not to be hard on yourself if you have to leave.
⢠If you are having a panic attack: [These may or may not work, depending on your personal disposition.]
1: Ground yourself to reality with something familiar like a keychain or even pictures of something on your phone. [Cats and dogs are good.] Also, do not trust everything your mind/body is telling you right now. Thoughts like, âiâm going to dieâ, âeveryone is leaving meâ, âeveryone hates meâ, are a part of the panic, try not to linger on them, because they will only make it worse.
2: Find a space that feels the safest for you, and stay there. If you canât get out of a crowded room on your own and no one you know is around, try to find some space to move freely and call/text a friend to come help you out.
3: Take slow, deep breaths. After breathing in, hold it for a few seconds before breathing out.
4: Stimulate your mind with something simple, and not stressful. Tap your fingers, re-read nice messages from someone, play a game one your phone that doesnât require any thought or is timed.
5: You are doing a really good job. You donât have to feel embarrassed. You are not alone. You are strong. ⢠Hang out at the kids table. You donât have to be an adult. Plus, there are probably no politics at the kids table.
⢠Donât feel guilty for feeling upset or overwhelmed, youâre allowed to be.
⢠If someone misgenders you, and youâre out, correct them if you feel comfortable enough to do so. If youâre not out, or you donât feel safe enough, please remember that there are people who do know, and who support you. Weâre with you today, weâve got your back.Â
⢠Youâre family is not always right.
⢠You donât have to be brave.
⢠Take another deep breath. ⢠No one should treat you like less for any reason. ⢠If youâre having a hard time with your family mistreating you to due to your gender, sexuality, choice in partner, choice in jobs, race, foods, etc, please try to remember that your life, your needs, and your choices are valid. You do not exist for your family. You do not have to be thankful to them for your existence. [Anyone saying something of that nature is possibly emotionally manipulating you.] You are you, and thatâs okay.
⢠If youâre wearing a binder, raise your arms and take several deep breaths. Cough to clear your lungs. ONLY WEAR YOUR BINDER FOR 8 HOURS AT A TIME.
⢠Donât be afraid, youâre not alone. ⢠Itâs okay to want to be alone.
⢠If youâve been sitting a while, stand up and stretch. If youâve been standing for a while, take a break. Try to stretch your legs out horizontally if you can.
⢠Eat something sweet. (If you like it) Treat yoâ self!
⢠Youâre awesome.
⢠You do not have to eat that food item your friends/ family are pressuring you to eat unless you absolutely want to. Food allergies are not a joke. Eating disorders are not a joke. Being a vegetarian/vegan/ is not a bad thing. Eating meat is not a bad thing. People who tease you about it or pressure you into eating foods you canât or wonât eat are being rude, and should be aware that they could make you really sick. People pressuring you into eating more or less food than youâre comfortable with are being rude and, again, could lead to you becoming very sick. â˘Â 1 (800) 273-8255  National Suicide Prevention Lifeline [USA] International Suicide Hotlines
⢠If you know someone problematic/triggering/abusive is going to be at a gathering, please consider telling the host that you donât want to or canât deal with them (if you can) or donât go to the gathering. You donât deserve to suffer through any negative or harmful interactions for the sake of the holidays or your family. â˘If you run into someone who is problematic/triggering/abusive, itâs okay to turn right around and avoid them for the rest of the event. Itâs also okay to have a reaction. [See above for panic attacks.] ⢠If you have bad memories associated with a certain holiday/seasonal day, you donât have to explain them to anyone. Itâs okay to just say ânoâ, and leave it at that. You donât owe anyone an explanation unless you want to tell them. ⢠Remind yourself that itâs okay to change your personality from your private space to a family gathering/party. Itâs okay to act/feel/seem like a different person around family. ⢠Religion is important to some people, and not to others. Itâs okay to feel strongly about it, or not at all. ⢠Forgot someoneâs name? Donât panic, itâs okay. You can try one of those tricks like asking them to put their number in your phone [hopefully theyâll type their name in too], or introducing them to your friend, [Hey, this is my friend Billy Bob, Billy Bob, meetâhold breath and hope theyâre polite], you could ask them how to spell their name/ask what nickname they prefer, or ask someone else once theyâve moved away. Or, you could let them know that youâve forgotten. Itâs alright, youâre not a bad person for forgetting. ⢠One mistake does not make you a failure. [This also counts for multiple mistakes, if youâre counting.] ⢠Try using thick/wide tape, or a folded, damp paper towel when picking up broken ornament pieces or glass. ⢠And please try to remember that not every tip/advice will be applicable to you or your situation.Â
