My early premonitions were correct. My choir bombed. Not terribly, but enough that I'm disappointed. The Ave Verum Corpus just kept dragging and dragging and they got slower and slower and I was genuinely frustrated at the organ trying everything to make the pulse as obvious as possible, but, it's a futile effort because the organ is a wind instrument and not a percussive instrument. From the congregation's perspective I'm sure it was okay, but, it's just not at all what we practiced. The other motet we did was falling apart much more noticeably and I don't even want to relive how badly that one went. It was a relief when we landed on the final chord.

I'm losing my fucking mind I'm like nauseous laughing. Someone posted this clip of their SunoAI vocalist randomly being shot to death in the middle of their song. And then it starts playing sad music. This is literally some creepypasta shit I'm kind of inconsolable.
Now if I had full license to be as pretentious as possible and full authority to inflict my pretentions upon my congregation and to the further catholic world I would MUCH rather bring back c clefs and old mensural notation
Even setting the literal work of art aside, this notation is so much more beautiful than neume notation, and the old renaissance clefs are so much better than modern clefs.
Like if we're going to put this stuff out there for a congregation that can't even read music, what difference does it make if you use neumes or puncta?

I really just don't care for gregorian chant. It's not that I hate it, but I don't necessarily love it. It just is what it is, most of which I happen to believe is fake 20th century music dressed up as 11th century music. But in all these catholic music director groups I'm in, these people fetishize it so heavily. It's the only thing they ever talk about. They love to post screenshots of their gregorian chant pdf collections, or pictures from their binders at the organ showing off that they can read neumes. "Are you guys singing LAUDA SION today? Look at my arrangement!", with the same exact 1970s arrangement everybody else is singing.
So I'm pretty much the only contrarian in the group that thinks "gregorian chant" is fake, is a conflation of various historical traditions recontextualized as one single thing that it never was, often composed in the 19th and 20th century, often utilizing modes ahistorically (like Lydian melodies throwing in B naturals all the time when they were almost always flattened. "Lydian sometimes has B natural, so let's exploit it so people can definitively tell this is not a standard f major scale" is a 20th century attitude), and so on.
I really don't want to beat this dead horse all the time but this one issue is thrown into my face disproportionately almost daily because of my job and my interests. I again reiterate that polyphony is the true heritage of the church, and that gregorian chant is a stripping away of the polyphonic tradition.
And I find it so pretentious, and I am incredibly pretentious myself so that is saying something, when you see catholic bulletins and missalettes notating all of the music in neumes just to show off how catholic they are. Simple plainchant notation with just the note heads and without the stems is sufficient for chant style, you don't need to pretend that you can read gregorian chant, because I know for a fact that 90% of these people can't even read neumes.
“It was the end of civilization, the end of all that men had striven for since the beginning of time. In the space of a few days, humanity had lost its future, for the heart of any race is destroyed, and its will to survive is utterly broken, when its children are taken from it. There was no panic, as there would have been a century before. The world was numbed, the great cities stilled and silent. Only the vital industries continued to function. It was as though the planet was in mourning, lamenting all that now could never be.”
— Childhood’s End, Arthur C. Clarke
I'm pretty nervous today because my choir is going to do two difficult pieces, and frankly, I don't believe in them.
