(Like, it's not subtle. Ratigan is a self-hating rat who identifies as a mouse. His insistence on this point in spite of not being remotely mouse-passing is both a running gag and the motivation behind his most heinous acts of on-screen villainy. Basil pronounces "sewer rat" like it's a slur, and mocks Ratigan by calling him a stenchus rodentus, a piece of faux-Latin nonsense imitating the forms of Linnaean taxonomy, literally putting Ratigan in his place by locating him within a scientific hierarchy of races. Ratigan's downfall ultimately comes about not as a product of Basil's cleverness, but due to Ratigan's inability to restrain his own inherently savage nature. All of this is in the surface-level text of the film.)

I kind of wish that the polarities of violence and sex in popular culture were reversed. Like, I wish that writers and filmmakers needed to justify up the wazoo their decisions to show a murder on screen when "they could have just done it tastefully in shadow or something," but no one even batted an eye at a sex scene. I kind of wish that erotic video games were the norm but FPSs were a considered a weird and loser-ish thing to play.

I mean, I really wish that you didn't have to justify either, but it bugs me that, of the two, killing is the one that you can use in wholesome family friendly entertainment but fucking is the one that you forever need to shield your children from even knowing about.

I don't think that this difference is innocent, either. Like, I think that sexual repression is a good means of control whereas the state always needs an army of young men who are willing to kill people.

this is the one art form I genuinely just cannot get my brain to accept as real. I’ve watched sped-up videos of it being done, read about it, seen in-progress marble statues and I still just can’t get it to sink in or stick. My mind doesn’t want to believe that any person has ever been able to start with a big block and break little bits off of it until it looks like a finely detailed person. At some point it has no recognizable shape and they still know where and how deep they should take a chip out of it that’ll still be the right decision 50,000 fucking chips later?!?
