If you’re a Leftist, if you support Palestine, it’s absolutely detrimental that you read this. I actually encourage that everyone should read this:
“The Palestinian People have consistently made it crystal clear that our enemy is the colonialist and racist ideology of Zionism, not Jews.”
“I have zero interest in memorising or apologising for centuries old tropes created by Europeans, or giving semantics more heft than they warrant, chiefly when millions of us confront real, tangible oppression[…]”
Words by Mohammed El-Kurd.
Palestinians are told the words we use dwarf the decades of violence enacted against us by the self-proclaimed Jewish State. A drone is one
just noticed this is from before october
Wait are we called mammals after mammary glands? Are mammals named after tits???
ARE WE THE BOOBS CLASS?
We are. And we also named our galaxy after boob juice. Twice.
"milky way" is obviously milk, but the hidden part is that "galaxy" comes from the Greek γάλα (gála), meaning "milk".
It's the tit-goo path tit-goo-thing. We are very, very breast focused as a species.
Eukaryote (good-kernels) as opposed to prokaryotes(before-kernels). We are the Domain of Fortunate Cellular Nuclei.
Animalia (of the anima.) we are in the Kingdom of the Breathing, or the Air-Souled.
Of the Phylum (tribe or clan) Chordata (having a string). We are the Clan of the String, referencing the spinal cord.
Class Mammalia, of course. the division of the titties.
Order Primate, which is a bit stuck-up, but I suppose the people doing the naming get to pick. Primate is of course primary, or First/Highest. Interestingly, this is in the sense of it being a job; a primate is a bishop of Christianity. This is reflected in the medieval Scala Naturae, where “primate” is an office held by the “natural” or divinely appointed top being in each tier of existence. Seraphim are the primate angels; humans are the primate people; lions are the primate animals; oak trees are the primate plants; and diamonds are the primate minerals. Translating the intent here, we are the Order of Ordained Authority, which we share with other natural bosses such as lemurs.
Depending how you want to do this, we are also suborder Haplorhini, the dry-nosed. This is separated from wet-nosed apes.
After this we land in the repetition of Homina-homina-homina-homina where there are several classes that drill down ever further, all of them rooted in “hominid.” Everyone knows homo is “man, human” but the root of why it’s “man” is because it is first “earth”. Human means “earthling”, and is rooted in “not-divine.” We are the family, subfamily, tribe and genus of earthlings.
By the time you get to species we are very lonely indeed, with only one species in our genus. This is actually a terrifically lonely place, and in this we are “sapiens.” This doesn’t mean just “wise” but “being wise,” which is more of a duty than a descriptor.
When you put it in context: Domain of Fortunate Nuclei, Kingdom of the Air-Souled, Clan of the String, Class of Milky Boobs, Order of the Bosses, Family of Earthlings, Tribe of Earthlings, People of Earth, Earthlings, Thinking Earthlings.
The point of taxonomy does seem to be making oneself a box that excludes all others in order to feel properly lonely and alone in it; one’s place in the world defined until one is alone. however, zooming out a bit, it does make for some stirring company.
me seeing "clan of the string" and feeling suddenly Very Extremely Connected to everything with vertebrae:
@elodieunderglass love this, but you forgot my favorite part- our subspecies is Homo Sapiens Sapiens, "aware" of being "aware", or Self-Aware Gang 😎
And that is extremely ironic and on-brand of me, thank you!
Woe, my passion project be upon ye-
And that's it! For Now!!
Thank you so much for reading and i hope it comes in handy for any of your wingies needs :3 This took me... a While, more than it should've, but is finally here! And maybe i've been slacking a little on the tagging for this blog specifically, but i recommend besides reading all of this, to go check my Guides tag, as i'm missing a few little things here and there that i couldn't for the life of me find a way to explain, and i've already re-done this Way too much for my liking o(-(
But you can also just go around this blog to get some inspiration :o I got a Lot of different wing styles here, and again i gotta go back to tagging (and fix my blog web theme, don't worry about it—) but other than that, you're free to explore this lil blog of mine
Two last things—First, i did all of this for free, i want it to reach as many people as possible (which is why soon-ish i'll translate the entirety of it to spanish and add image descriptions to both versions, i need a break....), but if you liked this enough and would like to leave a lil' tip on my kofi (@/rainbowpinyata), i would appreciate it a lot... Second, my inbox is always open if you or someone you know is in need of a more in-dept explanation on any of the parts of this, as i had to resume most of the info, or just needs a little bit of advice. I'm gonna explain wings Much more than i already have on the next part, but that... is going to take a bit, so...
Anyways, many thanks to my friends for always being there for me, i don't think i would've gone past the first draft or the many others after that without their encouragement, suggestions and general help with keeping me going. It means everything to me.
Also, click for better quality pls, the pages are pretty big but... this site....

A general cane guide for writers and artists (from a cane user, writer, and artist!)
Disclaimer: Though I have been using a cane for 6 years, I am not a doctor, nor am I by any means an expert. This guide is true to my experience, but there are as many ways to use a cane as there are cane users!
This guide will not include: White canes for blindness, crutches, walkers, or wheelchairs as I have no personal experience with these.
This is meant to be a general guide to get you started and avoid some common mishaps/misconceptions, but you absolutely should continue to do your own research outside of this guide!
The biggest recurring problem I've seen is using the cane on the wrong side. The cane goes on the opposite side of the pain! If your character has even-sided pain or needs it for balance/weakness, then use the cane in the non-dominant hand to keep the dominant hand free. Some cane users also switch sides to give their arm a rest!
A cane takes about 20% of your weight off the opposite leg. It should fit within your natural gait and become something of an extension of your body. If you need more weight off than 20%, then crutches, a walker, or a wheelchair is needed.
Putting more pressure on the cane, using it on the wrong side, or having it at the wrong height will make it less effective, and can cause long term damage to your body from improper pressure and posture. (Hugh Laurie genuinely hurt his body from years of using a cane wrong on House!)
(an animated GIF of a cane matching the natural walking gait. It turns red when pressure is placed on it.)
When going up and down stairs, there is an ideal standard: You want to use the handrail and the cane at the same time, or prioritize the handrail if it's only on one side. When going up stairs you lead with your good leg and follow with the cane and hurt leg together. When going down stairs you lead with the cane, then the good leg, and THEN the leg that needs help.
Realistically though, many people don't move out of the way for cane users to access the railing, many stairs don't have railings, and many are wet, rusty, or generally not ideal to grip.
In these cases, if you have a friend nearby, holding on to them is a good idea. Or, take it one step at a time carefully if you're alone.
Now we come to a very common mistake I see... Using fashion canes for medical use!
(These are 4 broad shapes, but there is INCREDIBLE variation in cane handles. Research heavily what will be best for your character's specific needs!)
The handle is the contact point for all the weight you're putting on your cane, and that pressure is being put onto your hand, wrist, and shoulder. So the shape is very important for long term use!
Knob handles (and very decorative handles) are not used for medical use for this reason. It adds extra stress to the body and can damage your hand to put constant pressure onto these painful shapes.
The weight of a cane is also incredibly important, as a heavier cane will cause wear on your body much faster. When you're using it all day, it gets heavy fast! If your character struggles with weakness, then they won't want a heavy cane if they can help it!
This is also part of why sword canes aren't usually very viable for medical use (along with them usually being knob handles) is that swords are extra weight!
However, a small knife or perhaps a retractable blade hidden within the base might be viable even for weak characters.
Bases have a lot of variability as well, and the modern standard is generally adjustable bases. Adjustable canes are very handy if your character regularly changes shoe height, for instance (gotta keep the height at your hip!)
Canes help on most terrain with their standard base and structure. But for some terrain, you might want a different base, or to forego the cane entirely! This article covers it pretty well.
Many cane users decorate their canes! Stickers are incredibly common, and painting canes is relatively common as well! You'll also see people replacing the standard wrist strap with a personalized one, or even adding a small charm to the ring the strap connects to. (nothing too large, or it gets annoying as the cane is swinging around everywhere)
(my canes, for reference)
If your character uses a cane full time, then they might also have multiple canes that look different aesthetically to match their outfits!
When it comes to practical things outside of the cane, you reasonably only have one hand available while it's being used. Many people will hook their cane onto their arm or let it dangle on the strap (if they have one) while using their cane arm, but it's often significantly less convenient than 2 hands. But, if you need 2 hands, then it's either setting the cane down or letting it hang!
For this reason, optimizing one handed use is ideal! Keeping bags/items on the side of your free hand helps keep your items accessible.
When sitting, the cane either leans against a wall or table, goes under the chair, or hooks onto the back of the chair. (It often falls when hanging off of a chair, in my experience)
When getting up, the user will either use their cane to help them balance/support as they stand, or get up and then grab their cane. This depends on what it's being used for (balance vs pain when walking, for instance!)
That's everything I can think of for now. Thank you for reading my long-but-absolutely-not-comprehensive list of things to keep in mind when writing or drawing a cane user!
Happy disability pride month! Go forth and make more characters use canes!!!
[ID for the last image:
where to put your stuff
purses/ bags: a lot of size range. can mess with balance. zippers are too hard with one hand. handheld means you have no hands, over the shoulder only.
fanny pack: accessible with one hand. limited space. good for balance.
backpack: very physically comfortable. evenly weighted. holds a lot (medicine, foldable cane, emergency supplies, etc). can't access without fully stopping and putting cane down/ hooking cane on arm/ dangling it on strap.
pockets: can only use on free side. many outfits don't have good pockets. end ID]

The Causal Chain And Why Your Story Needs It
The most obnoxious thing my writing teacher taught me every story needed, that I absolutely loathed studying in the moment and that only later, after months of resisting and fighting realized she was right, was something called the causal chain.
Simply put, the causal chain is the linked cause-and-effect that must logically connect every event, reaction, and beat that takes place in your story to the ones before and after.
The Causal Chain is exhausting to go through. It is infuriating when someone points out that an event or a character beat comes out of nowhere, unmoored from events around it.
It is profoundly necessary to learn and include because a cause-and-effect chain is what allows readers to follow your story logically which means they can start anticipating what happens next, which is what is required for a writer to be able to build suspense and cognitively engage the audience, to surprise them, and to not infuriate them with random coincidences that hurt or help the characters in order to clumsily advance the author's goals.
By all means, write your story as you want to write it in the first draft, and don't worry about this principle too much. This is an editing tool, not a first draft tool. But one of the first things you should do when retroactively begin preparing your story to be read by others is going step by step through each event and confirming that a previous event leads to it and that subsequent events are impacted by it on the page.
When your character is standing knee-deep in literal or metaphorical shit with a weapon in one hand and their last hope of surviving evaporating around them, and they’re wondering how their simple smuggling job/adulthood ritual/simple morning in an ordinary village led to ALL OF THIS, both they and the reader need to be able to backtrack through every single choice, mishap, attempt at fixing earlier problems and panicky flight or fib led them unerringly to this moment. That chain cannot have breaks in it, or you lose the whole impact.
Hi, do you have any resources for writing a fantasy story set in a desert kingdom? Like, something how the characters would dress, what would they eat, etc. Thank you :)
I don’t have any resources like that because it entirely depends on what kind of worldbuilding you’ve done. “Desert” is incredibly vague. What kind of desert are you talking about? Do you mean coastal deserts? Semiarid deserts? Cold deserts? Hot and dry deserts? Every single one of these and the multitude of other types of deserts each present different types of living conditions and it’s part of being a writer to make those world decisions and then go do the research for it. It’s all about following the logic of a world:
What kind of temperatures are typical for your desert?
What types of land formations are common?
What is the weather like in your type of desert?
How often do storms roll through?
How much lightning is associated with those storms?
Are wildfires common?
Do intense rains cause flooding or mudslides?
How intense are the winds?
How often are the formations swept away, if at all?
Are sandstorms common?
How do your people plan for, alert of, and protect themselves from sandstorms?
What kinds of vegetation live in your desert?
How many of those types of vegetation are edible?
Are any of them able to be farmed, or will your culture need to engage in the more nomadic lifestyle of foragers?
What kinds of animals live in your kind of desert?
Are any of them particularly well-suited to husbandry?
What kinds of materials can be salvaged from the types of vegetation and animals living in your particular type of desert?
How do they make the things they need from these materials?
What kinds of cloth can be made from these materials, if any?
How much cloth can be sustainably made?
What kinds of outfits could be made from the available materials in the area that would appropriately protect against the types of weather suffered in your type of desert?
How often does it rain in your desert?
How is water collected and stored, if at all?
What other sources of water are there?
Are there animals that can be milked?
Are there plants that store water that can be utilized?
Do your people have a way to extract groundwater?
What kinds of dwellings would make sense for your people to live in given how they must live in order to bring in enough food for their population?
Water is a crucial part to your peoples’ survival. Without a stable and reliable way to obtain water, they will be unable to sustain larger populations and they will likely remain small in size.
Population size and governing style are closely tied to how food is obtained. Foragers are less likely to have large populations, but they also cannot become a large state society if the land they’re living on will not sustain agriculture and allow for settling down. You cannot superimpose immense populations on lands that cannot sustain that.
Your culture will be heavily focused on that which is required for survival before they every have the time and ability to think about things like specialized workers (I.e., individuals who only perform one kind of task for the society such as carpenters or basketweavers or artists). Everyone does everything until their lands can prove sustainable for their population size and they’re able to settle in one place to become sedentary. That’s when free time even starts to become a thing and specialization comes into play in cultures.
Many cultures living in deserts are on the smaller side. Their size is often able to be correlated to the amount of available vegetation. The more vegetation available, the less they need to move to find food, the more likely they are to be able to sustain themselves as sedentary peoples, and the larger their population can become. The less vegetation, the more they must move to find food and water, likely employing a seasonal migration pattern, the smaller their population will be.
Look into researching peoples living in the type of desert you’re trying to place your people in. What is their culture like? How embellished is their culture able to be? Where do they get their food and water? Where do they get their materials? Are there peoples they trade with? How larger is their population? How much do they move? Why do they move? Where do they move to?
While you don’t want to simply rip a culture from our world for your story, you can learn how the logic of the world influences how people come to be who they are and live the way they live by examining those who live that way in our world first. Get your research boots out, Anon, you’ve got some ground pounding to do!
Good luck! -Pear
