Something you could say against these Online Bills!
Hello, I am writing you today as I know that there will be meeting this [Date and time of meeting] to vote on [Bill Name/Number]. I ask you to consider these reasons before you vote on [Date of the meeting or voting session] and why I am making the decision I am making.
First off, [Rep. Name] - I understand the need to make technology and the internet more safer for children, I can completely understand that. However, the way that this bill goes about it - is just wrong. Massive surveillance and requesting credit cards/ID's are personal pieces of information. Which is a serious breech of privacy and makes it a prime attack for hackers!
To further support my cause, we have seen where some states and websites have already implemented such procedures and to put it blunt - that information was not safe! Hackers were easily able to take that information! A very good example of this is Discord!
With that said, moving onto the second point of why this bill should not be passed. If you care to look at most online spaces - this bill is received very negatively. Nobody wants this bill, most people I have talked too - DO. NOT. WANT. THIS. BILL! The only people that want this bill are big tech companies and lobbyists that want to be off the hook for how they have harmed children! They also want this - to have information that they can use against us. This bill practically hands this to them.
Also for what is worth, these bills do not protect children/people, in fact - you may be causing them more harm. Many children/people use the internet as way to find connection(for hobbies or similar interest), address problems in their lives and find information on what to do (Think: abuse, bullying, mental health, physical health, etc….). Many children/people also use the internet to find much needed resources and aid. By introducing age into the equation, less children/people will able to find connection or use those resources.
Not to mention, this bill also harms adults in other ways - the requesting of credit cards/ID's or DL's - assumes that everyone is privileged to have one. That is not the case - and so - this bill is also classist and may even fall into discrimination of not just class, but disability. Which I am happy to discuss more if you so wish to do so!
With this in mind, I will leave this last message, that by limiting the internet - all that creates is that people find ways around the system and that is where more harm could be done. As they could get into a really dangerous situation and have no where else to turn too! You could make the analogy that this akin to some of the Abortion Bans passed and I would argue that they could be connected in some ways - but that is discussion for another time!
Lastly, if you want to make the internet more safer for children - the answer is not constant surveillance and the giving up of private information to access the most basic forms of technology. Might I suggest a media literacy class or some type of media education that can go a much longer way than what is proposed in [Bill Name/Code]. It does take more time, but there is no shortcut for good!
Please vote against the [Bill Name/Code] and any other bills like this in the future!
Thank you for taking the time to read this message, I'll look forward to your response!
