Imagine youre whipped into existence by a being that transcends anything that could be known and you're put to work on a task force with some other things that exist to create some more things that going to exist. Eventually a plan involving this little thing called life gets brought up in a meeting and it's been decided that man will go out and then come back.

The coming back is important.

Equally important- these new things are special, each and every one of them.

So they all gotta go, and they all gotta come back. The angel Lucifer (that's you) stands above all the other things that exist (so far) and purposes that we do exactly that. Send them all out, being them all back.

Good plan, great plan.

Someone else suggests that they should be good, and then come back.

Better plan, best plan.

The question then asked is how do we know if they are good?

After thorough debate y'all decide that they can only be considered good if they also had the choice to choose to be bad.

Infallible logic, but what if they choose to be bad?

Well then, they can't come back.

Bad plan, awful plan.

Then they won't all come back and you'll lose some along the way! They are all supposed to come back, they are all special and loved!

You point this out and mention you'll lose some with this plan.

'C'est la vie', your colleagues say.

But you know this isn't right, and against your protests the second plan is chosen.

This isn't right! We are supposed to love them all, Shepard them all. Make sure they get home!

You continue your protests.

Some agree with you, others don't.

Eventually such a rift forms between the plan 1 advocates and the plan 2 advocates that the first war happens.

You never meant to start such a battle but you just need them to understand. If only they could listen!!

Doesn't matter who won or lost. If war breaks out, everyone's already lost.

The big guy is mad, understandably. He knows you want to shepherd all the sheep, but there's just something you're missing. But you see the big picture as clearly as anyone. The sheep will be lost!!!! Its a shepherds job to get all the sheep home. Not just most of the sheep. Not a 99% success rate. All of them!! This was made clear to you from the beginning. Why would anyone ever want to lose sheep?

So now you and your homies got the shepherding job you wanted. Catching the 1%. A recluse for all the ones who can't make it back.

You can't go back either, but that's besides the point. Get the sheep. Guide the sheep. Bring them back.

This you do great at.

But now you get to see this whole 'agency' thing in action. You can see why some souls don't deserve to go back. You're stuck collecting the hitlers and dahmers of the world when all you wanted to do was help.

A literal hell of your own creation.

The people blame you for their problems. You try to help. All you ever wanted to do was help.

Like if they are in pain. Truly suffering and need help. Begging on their knees for help. You help them to the red poppy. It will help. You know it will.

And it does, to an extent. It helps the pain.

How were you supposed to know that it would cause them more pain?

Loved ones torn apart, homelessness, debt, you nerver meant for that to happen.

You ended one pain just to make 10 more. Great.

All you wanted to do was help.

Throw out of your home because you were so steadfast in your love for the humans, but the ones you get to collect are not worthy of love. You can see that now. You try to help but only end up fumbling.

The way i see it is theres 3 types of goals. Short, medium, and long term. Short term is looking forward to those leftovers or planning drinks with friends on Friday. Of course you can see where I'm going with this when I say medium goals that are worth living for are things like an upcoming trip, or major celebration. I define long term goals as lifelong, marriage, children, pets, major career accomplishments, that kind of stuff.

I also feel like you need all three to have a reasonably rounded life. If even one is missing or not defined, the slog feels even sloggier.

You have to constantly remember why you do any or all the things you do.

But if all three are gone, good luck.

Its not that there are no clothes in my closet, because there are! Other people have plenty of choices and they just pick one outfit and rock with it. But I look at all my clothes, all my choices, but none of them are truly suitable.

What do I do? Nothing feels worth it, and that's not even a depression thing, that's like an actual 'somethings fundamentally wrong with my life' thing.

So it might be because I'm depressed, but I feel like this really goes beyond that, I feel like my life is wrong at its core and I have no ideas on how to even begin to fix it.
