Zutara.. The completely PG enemies-to-friends ship where one of them goes through probably the most detailed redemption arc in recent entertainment history which is constantly held up as the gold standard over traditional 'heel-turn-im-a-good-guy-now' arcs.... The one with the hugs and the pep talks..... That Zutara??????

In the whole history of romantic storytelling.... This is the deepest depths of immorality we can go to?? This is what they think makes a pairing "dark and intriguing"?????

So you're telling me that Mai saved all of them, Zuko saw this happen, definitely knew what the consequences would be, and indeed Azula was going to straight up KILL Mai before Ty Lee paralyzed her, we know this because she got into the pose for summoning lightning, but he seems to not even think about her again until that one part of the final episode where she shows up to the palace for his coronation (how did she get in there?).

"Mai! You're okay! They let you out of prison?" BITCH WHO IS "THEY"???? HE IS THE FUCKING FIRE LORD!!!! HE IS THEY!!!!!!! WHO WROTE THIS??????

I'm supposed to buy that he is in love with her when he didn't seem worried about her a single time after she sacrificed herself for them all and then apparently also didn't think of her when they won the war? Didn't think to say "Hey! My girlfriend Mai, someone needs to find out what happened to her and where she is and report back to me immediately! I need to know if she's okay!" and then immediately have her released? Her uncle had to pull some strings???? Not Zuko, who is the Fire Lord, but her uncle the warden?????? And yeah I know he wasn't crowned yet but that's more of a ceremonial thing, he still had the authority.

And yeah I know Zuko had a lot on his plate but this is the girl he's supposed to be IN LOVE WITH, she should be one of his first concerns if you want people to believe he's in love with her.

I'm supposed to think the girl he literally tried to DIE for is just a friend and he feels nothing for her but the girl he is allegedly IN LOVE WITH he basically just left behind to die. He was willing to die for Katara, but was willing to put his concern for Mai's life and wellbeing aside for the sake of the mission.

Obviously, from a doylist perspective I don't think this is what the writers intended, but from a watsonian one, this is the conclusion we are led to.

He chose Katara's life over the mission, over his own life, but he chose the mission and his own life over Mai's life.

And I'm supposed to think he was in love with Mai and felt nothing for Katara.

It's laughable but it enrages me too bc WHAT WAS HE EVEN DOING THERE?

HE SHOULD'VE BEEN TOURING SOMEWHERE WITH HIS OWN MUSIC CAREER.

I hate the writers Is2g. I get that Matteo was the main lead and so they gave him everything he wanted etc etc. But to completely sideline a character whose MAIN FOCUS was music. Who literally composed VALIENTE and other VERY SUCCESSFUL SONGS. It just goes to show that they never gave a fuck about him. They always just used him as the third in a love triangle (hell, even in season 3 when Luna got momentarily confused with him). It's just bad writing by this point, and I'm not even saying that out of spite, it's just true. Because you're not writing a full dimensional character; you're writing a prop. A useful tool you place in the scene whenever you need it and then let it rot somewhere.

I'm not even saying they had to make him successfull if they didn't want to! Making it in the music industry is hard, we all get that. Hell-- THAT would've been a better plot for his character! Make him so poor he feels isolated from his rich, successfull friends. Make him so poor he couldn't follow Ámbar wherever she went-- not without making her pay everything for him and he refused to be a weight she carried. Make him so poor he's thinking of giving up entirely and work a 9-to-5 at a bank.

'But then his storyline would be too similar to Luna's' -- WELL, GOOD!!! Make them parallel each other!!! Make them both mad at the other bc they think the other has MORE chances of following their dreams and they're not taking them. Make them both support each other and resent each other in equal meassure!! Make one of them start getting back on their feet first and then help the other out too!! "I know what you're going through, I was there too, but there's another path." !!!

HAVE SIMÓN END THE SEASON WITH HIS LONG-AWAITED BREAK IN THE INDUSTRY AND LUNA BACK ON THE SKATING COMPETITIONS, AND EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW THIS MEANS LIFE WILL TAKE THEM IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS, IT'S OKAY, BECAUSE THEY KNOW HOW BAD THE OTHER WANTED IT !! AND THEY'RE JUST HAPPY THEIR BEST FRIEND IS HAPPY WHENEVER THEY ARE!!!

This is a guide for fic writers want to write a canon-era story set in the Fire Nation, or featuring Fire Nation characters. A quick little primer on the tiny details of everyday life that you might not think about, but certainly stuff that would make me, an asian person, wince if I were to encounter it. BRUSHES, not quills. CHOPSTICKS, not forks. 

(note #1: this was partly inspired by a chat with @elilim​) 

(note: #2:  I originally intended it for zukka fic writers before realizing that other writers might find it useful. so apologies for a slight Zuko-bias for that reason)

(note #3: this is all stuff i was thinking about when writing firebender’s guide, in case anyone was wondering)

1. CLOTHING

Okay, I think the most straightforward way to describe what everyone’s wearing most of the time is “tunic”. They’re all just…tunics of different colours and varieties. Later when Zuko’s the Fire Lord he wears robes. The show provides a better visual guide than I could, here are a few notes to keep in mind:

a) Japanese people wear their collars LEFT crossed over RIGHT

I don’t think this would come up in writing as much as it would in art, but it’s considered bad luck to do it the wrong way because that’s only for dead people. Let my boy Zuko demonstrate:

b) There are no buttons

This is picky, but Wikipedia says “Functional buttons with buttonholes for fastening or closing clothes appeared first in Germany in the 13th century.[6] They soon became widespread with the rise of snug-fitting garments in 13th- and 14th-century Europe.” I kinda believe it. If you look closely, characters’ clothes are always tied together or wrapped in some way with a belt. If there are fasteners, they’re braided frog closures that go into a little loop, like the qipao-style dresses women wear in Ba Sing Se, or Zuko’s casual prince’s clothes in the topmost image. Anyways, I don’t think Zuko or Azula or the Gaang would technically button or unbutton anything when they’re changing clothes. Clothing is designed to be tied, not buttoned.
