Anyway, I think that what modern Star Trek really needs is not some writer who knows the canon inside and out (because you can always hire someone for that), but someone who genuinely believes in it.
Not in the sense that, "Oh, they believe that a series will be successful", but someone who looks at all of cheesy stuff and all of the cringey stuff and all of the stuff about utopia and humanity's infinite potential and working to better yourself and the rest of humanity and the value of truth and science and diplomacy and reason over conflict and just...believes in it. Not pay it lip service in between action spectacles; not try to subvert it; not try to ignore it; but believe.
I think Lower Decks and Prodigy have been the best of the new series precisely because they were written in large part by people did believe in it.
