In case you haven't heard the term "BroncoVision" before, let me enlighten you: it stems from the idea that the entire student body at Cal Poly Pomona is, on average, at least 2 points lower on the 1-10 attractiveness scale than the rest of the world. Therefore, BroncoVision is the gradual lowering of standards, so that someone who might usually be a "7", now looks like a "9" - basically, long-term beer goggles.

I OBJECT. Besides being overtly shallow and gross, BroncoVision is based on a flawed premise. The grass is always greener on the other side. I present you with some photographic evidence:

Look at Erin. Erin is a Bronco.

Both of these girls go to Cal Poly Pomona.

Madeleine goes to Cal Poly Pomona.

Emily is a Bronco too.

I think you would have to be in a special state of denial not to admit that the Cal Poly Pomona ASI election system is a complete joke. I don’t pretend to be any better than the rest of our student body – I had to look up most of the candidates names just to write this article – but I think it’s time to recognize the problem.

As Winston Churchill famously said, “the best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter,” and on the Cal Poly Pomona campus this certainly holds true. I brought up the ASI elections in several of my classes and found that most of my peers couldn’t name a single person who was running. Our current ASI president, Chris Osuala, is quoted in an article on the university website as saying “when I was a freshman… I didn’t even know we had a president of this school.” That’s disheartening.

I went online to try and find out more about the candidates, and discovered there was absolutely no information on the official CPP website. The Poly Post had profiles on the candidates, but stuck to glittering generalities such as “the goal of their campaign is to ensure student voices are heard and their ideas are implemented,” or “both candidates want to reach out to as many students as possible and really engage them in different things so they know that ASI is more than just programs and events.” Hard-hitting stuff. The attendance at most of the debates and info sessions is notoriously low, so the only way students can get their information is from online – and this is what they’re offered.

Did you know, for example, that one of the candidates is a first-year? That one has a GPA below 2.5? That one got puking-in-a-planter drunk at the Heaven and Hell frat party this year? Probably not.

How do you feel about the current ASI candidates? The Student Success Fee? Your classes? Parking?
