When I was a kid, I always thought Mannie Fresh was a joke. Maybe because while everyone else on Big Tymers and Cash Money were in videos snarling showing off grills and jewlery, this guy was always smiling like he was trying to win a beauty pagent. Maybe it's also because he is a black dude from Nola with a name like a Hasidic Kosher bodega in Brooklyn.

The man is a genius producer, musician, rapper, hype man and promoter. Manny is an underappreciated hip-hop kitchen god who puts food on the table and welcomes everyone to eat. He makes fun, bouncy beats that are unapologetically cheerful. And he was doing it when every other southern rapper was ripping paranoid samples from two-note John Capenter horror movie soundracks and threatening to stab you in your sleep.
