For all the issues and complaints about Disney's Hexed changing the main character to a girl, and the loss of a story with a mother-son dynamic that we haven't seen much of in animation, I completely forgot there was one short from Pixar film about a mother and a son.
I feel regret forgetting about Bao (directed by Domee Shi, who would later direct Turning Red) because it's actually one of the best shorts Pixar ever had.
Without giving too much away for those who haven't seen this short, the film is about a mother and her son, and the struggles that come as he grows and wants to do his own things while the mom wants him to stay in her life. And yes, there's also a divide in tradition and culture vs going against it/chosing the modern that ties into the conflict.
But it highlights why mother and son relationships are different than father and son relationships. Mothers are usually the nurturers (though some moms have had to take up the workload of two parents in real life), and they want what's best for us, even if we don't see eye to eye. And ironically, its the dad who plays a crucial role in this story that you think would normally be suited for the mom.
I still have a few guesses as to why Hexed changed Billie to a girl, but until Disney can provide us with a story about a mother and a son and actually make it past the concepts, we thankfully have this short from Domee Shi and Pixar.
