Pirates, traditionally, went to the Caribbean by leaving the west coast of England and the west coast of Ireland. I am fortunate that my father had an Irish accent, quite a strong Irish accent, and my mother came from the port of Bristol, which is where pirates - and Liverpool as well, but pirates mainly came from Bristol, and her accent was a Bristol accent, which is sort of like that, and so I thought, if I sort of did an impersonation of my dad and my mom, then Iād sort of sound quite piratey. ā¦Ā
I must tell you something funny - when we read the read-through of the first movie, I had the first line of the film, and so I said - the little girl was singing, āYo, ho, yo ho,ā and I said, āQuiet, missy. Cursed pirates are sailing these waters,ā and Geoffrey Rush looked over at me, aghast, and went, āThatās exactly the accent I was gonna do.ā But, as we didnāt meet in the first film, it didnāt matter.Ā
The shit really hit the fan in #3, when he had to say to me, something like, [in the accent] āAh, the green flash, have you ever seen the green flash, Mr. Gibbs?ā and I said, [in the accent] āYes, I think Iāve seen my fair share,ā and he said, āWeāve gotta stop this.ā He said, āSomebodyās always got to speak in between us, so that the audience donāt realize weāre doing exactly the same performance.ā
So he said to me, āWhat can I do if anybody ever spots this?āĀ
Ā And I said, āWell, I always tell people that I have got my accent because I had a mother from Bristol and a father from Ireland.ā So I say, āWhy donāt you tell everybody that you had a mother from Ireland and a father from Bristol, and thatās a completely different accent?ā So now thatās what he does.
