Dungeons and Dragons exploded in popularity around the early 80s, which is also when New Teen Titans was being written. Obviously the timeline has shifted to accommodate for the characters being as young as they are in the modern day, but I still kind of like imagining certain ages happening in the era they were written (as in, the Fab Five using 60s slang, the Young Justice roster being 90s kids, etc.)

So if Dick is familiar with D&D to this extent, he must’ve gotten into it during his NTT days. Thus begs the question: who else did, and what did they play as? Did they have campaigns based on their villains? Did Dick do this under the excuse of “war games and strategic role play” because he had too many sticks up his ass to admit he just wanted to spend time with his friends? The world may never know.

You see, I hear all of you, and I raise you: Dick learned how to play dnd with the Titans so that he could play with Tim, because Tim was still kind of distant and overly hero-worshippy and professional at the beginning. Dick comes back after A Lonely Place of Dying already thoroughly brother pilled, but with no means of getting through to the kid who adores him as a figure but doesn’t yet know how to connect with him as a person, and Dick thinks “he seemed like a nerd, he probably likes nerd things”, and thus uses the Titans as practice.

Then he may or may not “coincidentally” bring it up the next time he visits, to loosen Tim up a bit, and it works. This begins a very disjointed, years-long campaign with sessions any time either has time to visit (when Tim goes to Blüdhaven or when Dick visits Gotham respectively). They did a lot in the Clench recovery, and maybe during parts of No Man’s Land where they were waiting around and there was nothing to do.
