ocean sounds for those of you who need it
thanks i made a little painting about it
listen. i know it's not 2014 anymore and i know it's just a throwaway line and that the russo brothers didnt intend for marvel action blockbuster captain america the winter soldier to become the tragic gay love story that never was but man. having steve say "it's kind of hard to find someone with shared life experience" in a conversation about romantic relationships right before the bucky reveal is so cruel. it's not just about steve and bucky obviously having the shared experience of being "out of time," it's the fact that they've both been stripped of their humanity in opposite directions. steve is a legend, he is an american hero and a national icon before he is a human being the same way that bucky is a weapon and a killing machine before he is a human being. steve knows that anyone who falls in love with him in the 21st century fell in love with captain america first, and that's just not him. but then the one person who knew him first and knew him best and loved him (not captain america, that little guy from brooklyn) so much he died for it is alive, impossibly. and it's a miracle because he's back and it's horrific because he's back under the worst possible circumstances. but to steve, the winter soldier is worth tearing the world apart for because he's always been bucky first. they find each other and suddenly they're human again. and maybe, despite it all, being "out of time" becomes a blessing, because in this century they'd finally be allowed to love each other the way they've always wanted to. like real people do.
like. no. the captain america trilogy isn't about two queer men traumatized and alienated by war and modern life rediscovering and reclaiming their humanity through their love for each other. but. i mean. it couldve been

"this thing is rare and only affects 1% of the population" dude that's 80 million people can you shut up
"this thing is so rare, if you put everyone it affects on an island it would be the 20th most populated country in the world, more than the UK, more than South Korea, and more than Canada AND Australia AND Tunisia all put together. we can literally forget about it that's not many people"
#is this about autism?
it's about autism and EDS and intersex variations and about trans people and also it's about golden blood and it's about blind people, it's about screaming all day long and howling the night out that you exist even if you're not everywhere, you're small but your heart beats and your lungs pump air and they want you forgotten in the pages of a book they won't read
Itβs that time of year again so here is your yearly reminder that the world isnβt ending and people donβt hate you. The sun is just setting at 6 pm.

I bring a real 'actually people who are pregnant do deserve some special consideration because they are effectively at least temporarily disabled if not permanently after some complications' vibe to the party that a lot of people don't seem to like
They supporting
I've been thinking about the increasing tendency to refer to trans women well into their 20s and 30s - or just the whole demographic of trans women - as 'trans girls'. IMO, This is happening at the same time as a tendency of cis women of the same age groups referring to themselves as girls, but it has some other subtleties to it.
While cis 'I'm just a girl' and 'going out with the girlies' language appears to be a merger of the traditional bio-essentialist infantilisation of women (on the rise with conservatism) and a millennial sense of being unable to access the economic markers of adulthood and thus of women hood,
Trans references to themselves as girl appear to be a mix of that same sense of lack of access the economic markers of adulthood (dialed up to 100) and a desire to reclaim a girl teenage life that they didn't get to have in the closet.
As such, when a trans woman in her late 30s refers to herself as a girl, I'm a lot less annoyed by it and generally don't hear a low-key-conservative undertone that I often hear in cis women 'girl' statements.
But when viewed at a group level I think the collective impact - the infantilisation of women - might still be there. Just look at how collective referrals to trans girls and trans women by trans people and allies differ, statements with the word girl in it often emphasize vulnerability ("support trans girls, put a trans girl on your couch") while statements with the word women in it emphasize strength ("trans women fought for your right to have Pride").
And while it is definitely true that trans women are under attack and need our support, speaking of trans women mainly as vulnerable underestimates how much strength it takes just to be a trans woman, to make it this far, to name your truth in this world. The trans women I know might not have access to the economic markers of adulthood, but they have each summoned the strength to take control of their own lives and claim self-determination in a world that responds to them with hostility.
So while I'd never tell trans woman in her late 30s not to call herself a girl (I'm happy that she gets any moment in her life to feel like a girl, at whatever age that happens), I'm absolutely not going to assume that any adult trans woman wants to be referred to as a trans girl and I'm not going to refer to trans women collectively as 'girls'.
i used to hear a lot of "you're not really a man, you just hate how women are treated" directed at trans men, and lately i've been hearing a lot of "if you don't like how women are treated, you're probably not actually a woman" directed at women, and i've gotta say i'm not a fan of either of these.
"Clearly I wasn't talking about disabled people-" yeah part of the problem is that the existence of disabled people just isn't considered in your worldview like that's the problem we're criticizing not a get out of jail free card

More of you need to learn about these βοΈ
leopard seal
It's fascinating (and infuriating) to live in an age where almost everyone I know is languishing in Dickensian poverty but social media is slap full of professional-managerial computer-touchers who've never known hunger insisting that the economy is fine because their metrics say rich people are still rich.
A bad economist and a bad engineer are often bad in the same way; they're both people who, when reality doesn't conform to the model, decide to get mad at reality instead of adjusting the model
And they kill people
easy to miss that one of the reasons maternal mortality is diminished so extremely by modern medicine is that modern medicine makes it so much more possible to identify the pregnancies that will die and take you with them, or are otherwise unacceptably high risk. and then discontinue those ones safely, before it's too late.
thought about this because it's so frustrating when people argue that 'dying in childbirth' is a historical sort of event that doesn't happen nowadays (false) and therefore is irrelevant to the legal status of abortion, since it's not a real danger.
except it super is, and i think a lot of people haven't noticed that this argument in addition to simply being incorrect is basically the same as when people say we don't need vaccines for deadly diseases because no one gets those now anyway.
like yeah one reason for that is we vaccinate everybody ffs.
Note: after the end of Roe v Wade in the US, the maternal mortality rate (and the infant mortality rate) are showing clear increases in the states with the strictest anti-abortion laws.
Forcing people to carry high risk or non viable pregnancies to term kills.

Can I be honest with yall I don't want to hear SHIT against cishets at pride this year
"But it's not FOR them!!!" The biggest military power in the world belongs to a christofascist nation overseen by a felon found guilty of 34 federal crimes and has greenlit a gestapo with more direct funding than the entire military of Canada for the purpose of ethnic cleansing. Let Hetero Jessica throw some biodegradable glitter at a municipal parade
At this point if anyone is trying to exclude anyone benignly pro-queer from a pro-queer space I'm just going to assume you're a fed or something idk like something something destabilize the movement from within or whatever
