My current read of Jazz in G1-adjacent continuities is that he makes friends easily and is a fun-loving, open-minded, supportive guy everyone loves and admires... but that he really struggles with opening up. Now that I've seen him in so many different series, it's really become clear to me that while he is so kind to everyone and is such a good friend, basically all of his relationships with others boil down to "the person he works with" or "the person he has fun with" or some combination of the two. Even dynamics like the one between Jazz and Optimus, which you'd think would be more specific since Optimus is his leader and Jazz a sort of advisor or right hand, come across to me as respectful yet almost distant.

From the outset I thought Jazz just doesn't "rank" friendships, like maybe he practices one form of relationship anarchy and sees each one as beautiful and unique in their own way, in-keeping with how he is so excited about so many different aspects of Earth's dances and music genres. And I think that seems like what he'd want to do. But now that I've seen him more, it sort of seems like he's really failing to do that, and instead practicing... I don't know, relationship conformity? By keeping everyone at arm's length? Which is sad because everyone really cares about him! For most of his dynamics with other characters, I can describe each of them in like, a sentence!

It's been shown that when Jazz is given the chance to open up emotionally, he chooses not to take it. He can also extremely minimize even horrific suffering he's been through:

In a way, how avoidant Jazz is regarding vulnerability is a bit like Ultra Magnus always passing up care or recognition due to his low self-esteem and dutiful nature, but it's almost... more than that? Like, at least it's clear when Ultra Magnus IS suffering even when he doesn't think he deserves help. I think Jazz's cheerful personality and the fact that he excels at so many things disguises issues like this well, and that's really interesting and sad to me.
