Johnny knew these weren't usually things people laid awake at night thinking about when it came to their best friends. He knew he didn't notice half of what he did about her in anyone else. Not once had he given any of his other teammates faces a second thought, and don't ask him anyone else's eye color, or how the fabric of their clothes cling to their skin, or the way the wind moves through their hair.

It was just her.

It was always her.

So many times, he'd been so close to saying something. "Just fucking say it already, ye daft bastard." He'd tell himself the countless times he had his arms wrapped around her, holding her as tight as he could, as though he couldn't get her close enough. The words, however, wouldn't come out.

Why?

Because it was better to be by her side and forever live with the ache of never truly having her, then to open his gob and risk losing her all together.

For all that he studied her, understood her, could map out every freckle on her skin, he missed one crucial detail.

That she'd been noticing him all the same.

She loved the mole by his mouth that sat hidden behind his beard, easily missed unless you were really looking. His strong hands that made her feel so safe, made him look so capable. She could remember every story and every incident that belonged to every scar. As much as she made fun of his hair, she'd learned it well enough to cut it for him. It came out perfect to his liking, every time.

For every time he'd almost said anything, she was having the exact same crisis.

"Fuck, fuck. I love you. I love you so fucking much. I wish I could just fucking tell you."

It was tragic, really. Two idiots in love that were both too stupid to speak up.

Both of them looked back and wondered how they were sitting here today, married and living in his home country with their bairn playing with her dinosaur toys that she loved so much by the couch, happy as can be. A little girl who would never had to wonder if she was loved, not a single day.

"We did good, hen. No idea how, but we did."

"I'm not sure what's more insane. That we both got out of the military alive or that we finally fucking made out one day."

"Definitely the second one."

"Even with that bullet hole in your head?", I smirked, tapping his scar playfully.
