In Alabama working on a film where the character is absolutely 100% nothing like me and also exactly 100% just like me. It’s chaos. An absolute mind flip. Everything I’ve ever dreamed of. I’m completely grounded and calm and focused but I’m flipping out and twirling and 15 years old. On a different note, I was a little nervous to come to Alabama. Haven’t had many visits to the South and the few I’ve had have been… interesting. But this is coming from a woman who is California born and raised. Anyway, I wasn’t sure about me and my interracial family taking the leap down South for a bit. The director even recommended we come early, fly into Atlanta, and then drive to Huntsville. “Enjoy the time.” But, too many stories from friends, family, America… I just wasn’t interested in driving through the South with my family. So, I declined. Kindly requested that we simply fly into exactly where we’re shooting, work, and fly home as soon as possible. But I just have to say, most people were so kind and so hospitable, and so friendly and sincere. I was deeply touched by this trip. Not just because I got to shoot a film but because of the light that shines through so many Americans. And this isn’t to deny the issues and the problems that America has. It’s just a shout-out to the kind American people who give a hand when your luggage seems to be getting heavier and your kids are tired of traveling. The folks who are super patient when your two year old decides to belt out the Gummy bear song on the airplane and won’t stop. The grandparents who tap you on the shoulder to tell you it’s okay. And reassure you by telling you their grandkids are just like our kids. The people who play peekaboo with your baby just to keep him distracted so I can rest my head for 45 seconds. The Americans who (without asking) lead you in the right direction when your lost… I just think America needs a better PR team. It seems that all we hear about is the bad. But everyday good people are all around us. And they should be talked about more. That’s it. That’s all I want to say… Oh! This is my grandmother, Ruby L. Floyd (1914-2018). Today, as I reflect on the courage and work of Martin Luther King Jr., I can’t stop thinking of my grandmother who encouraged me to post photos of Black history heroes all over my bedroom, while I was growing up. Today, she has been so heavy on my heart. I am thinking of her and all the people who fought and continue to fight for equal rights all over the world. In this article from the 1930s, my grandmother (at the time Miss Ruby L. Midgett) stood out as a singer who was chosen to sing a solo for First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. This was one of my grandmother’s greatest achievements. Greatest memories. At the time, she thought this moment would boost her career as a singer, it did not. Racism continued to rear its ugly head and it was very difficult for her to pursue her career. So, she received her Associates Degree from State Teachers college in Elizabeth city (now called something else). But after, she ended up cleaning white people’s homes. This broke her heart. Years later she was able to receive her Bachelors degree from Temple University and became a teacher. She was an incredible teacher whose lessons I still live by.
