Under the table, Mira’s sneaker nudges Zoey’s boot. It’s a rhythmic, absentminded contact, but it sends a hum up Zoey’s spine— a low-frequency buzz that makes the rest of the room go blurry.

Mira doesn’t feel like someone she has to earn. Doesn’t feel like someone just out of reach, someone she has to stretch herself into shape for.

With Mira, things just… happen. Conversations flow without effort. Silences don’t press in uncomfortably— they wash over them like a blanket.

Mira starts to pull her hand away, an instinctive shift from public to contained, from something shared to something cut off cleanly before it lingers too long.

But Rumi doesn’t let her. Instead, she stops right there, just outside the entrance.

And before Mira can process it fully, Rumi’s already moving. Her mask slips down, quick and deliberate. Her other hand comes up, brushing Mira’s hat back just enough to expose her face.
