I feel so bad for Dain. I get his side of things but I also get Violet’s side. She wants him to believe in her and have hope but Dain is constantly thinking in risk assessment and fear for his best friend he genuinely cares about. I know she’s not what he needs right now but man, I’m bummed cause I really like him. I wish he’d find hope and see the positive but it’s clear Basgiath has done a number on him if he has to live in this constant state of fear.

I feel like Violet has proven she can defy odds and I’m so proud of her for that. It’s sad that part of her lost respect for Dain because she realized he simply just can’t bring himself to hope and root for her, just expecting the worst.

I already know Violet and Dain are not it sadly and aren’t going to get a chance it seems at this point so I hope Yarros does give Dain the character development that allows him to find hope against all odds. I want this man to be happy. He’s not a bad person, he’s just flawed.

Her brow knits, and Dain flinches. “I’m going to hurt you.”

“Gods, don’t I know it.” He nods. “But you’re not going to kill me, no matter how badly you want to. Now do it.”

Her mouth tightens, and Dain grits his teeth.
