Believe in Justice & Hold a Determination to Fist

We’re about two weeks into the summer season, so I figure it’s about time to sum up what I feel about the shows I’ve watched so far.

Classroom Crisis wasn’t initially a show I thought I’d be watching, but watching it live and reading the basic plot description it sounds pretty alright. The idea of an Engineering class working for both the school and an actual company is kinda neat, especially considering one of their classmates is one of their employers. 7/10

I hope I don’t need to explain this one, it’s just Dragon Ball Super. Sure it seems like they’re going for a slow start with this one, but I’d rather them get the filler out of the way in order to have the action flow in the later episodes better. It sounds like they’re heading straight into the Battle of Gods plot in the next few episodes anyways based on their descriptions. 8/10

GATE: Jieitai Kanochi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri is probably my least favorite out of all the things I’ve watched thus far. Sure the idea of modern military vs roman-level tech sounds pretty silly enough to be a decent premise, but GATE somehow manages to fall flat on it’s feet and feel like it’s pandering too hard to make the Japanese Self-Defense Force look good. I hear that it’s worse in the manga, so I’m not sure if I’m gonna stick with this one. 4/10

In a world flooded with people hyping up Sword Art Online as the next best thing since sliced bread, Overlord reminds me of a simpler time when all we had was the .hack// Series. It takes the “Protagonist is a normal guy trapped in a game” plot that we’ve been seeing enough of in the last few years and kinda turning the tables on it by making the Protagonist the only human in the game. It’s kinda neat so far, but with only one episode to base off of so far I’m not sure how this is gonna play out right now. This might be one to watch out for. 7/10

You’d think I’d actually like the lone mecha show this season, but Aquarion Logos is off to a rough start for me honestly. Maybe it’s the focus on Kanji that gets lost in translation, or the fact that none of the usual staff is working on this (May’n is alright, but it’s not Aquarion without an Akino OP). Maybe it’s the art-style, I dunno, but this one isn’t clicking with me as much as EVOL did. I’m still gonna stick around for the ride though. 6.5/10

Speaking of rides, Symphogear GX still manages to hold onto the title of wildest ride this season. Two episodes in and it’s already full of the same twists and turns alongside a top-tier OST that made the first two seasons fun to watch. Easily one of the best shows this season, but only if you watched the first two seasons, of course. 11/10

It’s weird, having both Symphogear and Gatchaman Crowds airing in the same season again. Insight feels pretty much the same as the first season of Crowds did, and that’s honestly okay. Heck they’re even using the first season’s soundtrack, so you’ll get your GATCHAMAAAAAAAAAN fix. The only worry I have so far is how they’re gonna handle the VAPE/Red Crowds thing, since so far it just seems like a repeat of S1. 8/10

Last off is probably the best “new” show this season, Ushio & Tora (I doubt this really counts as new since it’s based off of a manga that’s 25 years old). It feels good having another show that just screamed early 90′s action/humor after dealing with so many harem shows in the last decade. 10/10

All in all, this season is actually pretty good, loads better than last one at least. I might pick up one or two more shows, but I’ve got enough to keep me satisfied over the summer.

Oh yeah speaking of harem shows I watched the first episode of Monster Musume on a whim and I’m honestly sure why I decided to watch something that was pretty much borderline porn.
