The Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, and the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Eric Williams, at the Red House, April 18, 1966.
One year earlier, in 1965, Dr. Eric Williams had travelled to Ethiopia and invited Emperor Selassie to visit Trinidad and Tobago. He helped organize a Caribbean Tour for the Emperor, whose first stop was in Trinidad and Tobago, followed by Barbados, and then Jamaica.
The Emperor stayed in Trinidad for four days, during which he was taken on a tour of the islands, including visits to Parliament, the University of the West Indies, and the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Arouca — the first nation outside of Africa and Jerusalem to receive the Ethiopian Orthodox Church was Trinidad and Tobago, in 1952. He was celebrated with a Rally at the Queen’s Park Oval where crowds gathered to see him and his Royal Family tour the streets in an open-air vehicle. After three days in Trinidad, he was escorted on a trip to Tobago.
The picture was published on the front page of the Daily Mirror newspaper on April 20th 1966.
