man i'm so sick of seeing clone ocs or whatever with tā moko. please stop drawing tā moko on your characters if you aren't māori. i promise your māori character can have a deep connection to their culture without having tā moko done and you are not going to draw it correctly if you don't know what everything MEANS. each individual line has meaning to māori and at best you'll get the individual designs right but won't understand the meaning behind them so you've created a meaningless moko and, much more likely, you'll just butcher an incredibly sacred art.
i'd say to pay for a tohunga tā moko (moko artist) for a design if you literally cannot keep your hands off of it but in reality? please don't. you still have to draw the moko every single time and you are gonna mess it up. ESPECIALLY FACE MOKO. THOSE ARE SO SACRED STOP DRAWING THEM
i have a set design for my character's moko that i essentially take hours setting up to trace every time i draw ia and even my character having tā moko is iffy culturally as a tohunga tā moko didn't create it! it's one thing to simply create kōwhaiwhai, it's another altogether to depict tā moko. i plan to pay a moko artist to design moko for my oc eventually as well.
just, don't please? it's contentious and you are going to mess it up and look stupid at best.
(and DON'T trace an existing moko. that's even worse. tā moko is unique to the individual with the moko and you essentially just copied someone's identity and family line onto your oc for an aesthetic design)

This is the real time up to date version of the post about residential schools and boarding schools in Canada Alaska and Oceania that targeted our Indigenous children and September 30 Orange shirt day as I find more art research context and resources
"If we held a moment of silence For every Native, Arctic Native, and Hawaiian and Indigenous Pasifika child who died in a residential and boarding school. We would be silent for 134 or more years." "No matter what the numbers are." "There arent supposed to be graveyards at schools." Ever."
The last residential school closed in 1997…Klanada always talks about truth and reconciliation for some fucking reason. Truth and reconciliation? How about truth and motherfucking consequences? “KKKanada is not polite. It is a settler state that is still committing genocide.”
“There are at least 973 American Indian, Alaska Arctic Native, and Native Hawaiian and Indigenous other Pasifika children died while attending schools in the system. The Department acknowledges that the actual number of children who died while attending Indian boarding schools is likely greater.” “The investigation also confirms that there are at least 74 marked or unmarked burial sites at 65 of the schools. One initiative proposed in the report is to identify and repatriate the remains of children who never returned home from the schools.”

Remember that there is what we call haole sanctioned boarding schools in Pasifika Oceania Where they beat you for speaking your Indigenous te reo, praying to your gods goddesses and demigods, or practicing any facet of your Indigenous Pasifika culture It was a facet of cultural genocide in our island homes
There is a reason why many of our ancestors elders and kin cant speak our te reo Indigenous lingua franca Or spoke in in hush quiet behind close doors out of fear of being beaten again Or in shame The fucking settler state engineered it this way
“In 1985, Hawaii had just 32 Kanaka Maoli kids under 18 who could speak Hawaiian. Not because it died out naturally. A law banned it from every classroom in 1896. By 1902, zero schools taught it.
In 1983, a few parents opened ’Aha Punana Leo, literally “the language nest.” They could barely convince four families to enroll.
Today 27,000+ people speak Hawaiian at home. They immersed a generation in it. This time, the language didn’t go under.”
Does Oceania Pasifika Have a separate day for our Haole sanctioned schools they built in Moana? Or is it also included in September 30th?
“That’s the same throughline as everything else here. Why Wôpanâak had to be rebuilt from paper. Why Hawaiian fell to 32 fluent kids by 1985. Why elders have gone quiet. Same policy, local variations, across an ocean. Language and tattoo revival isn’t nostalgia sitting beside that history. It’s the direct answer to it.”
“Aotearoa is a clear case. Sir James Henare a respected Māori leader, recalled being sent to cut his own switch from the bush. Then beaten with it for speaking te reo Māori at school. Told plainly that English was the price of earning a living. By the 1980s, fewer than 1 in 5 Māori were native speakers of their own language.”

Since their first arrival in the new world a number of religious entities began the project of converting Indigenous Peoples to Christianity. This undertaking grew in structure and purpose, especially between 1831 and 1969. When the governing officials of Canada joined with monotheistic churches to create and operate the residential school system.
"In the 40s and 50s the Canadian Department of Pensions and National Health performed nutritional experiments on already malnourished Indigenous children in residential schools. The information was later used to create Canada’s food guide." Everything in Klanada begins with settler violence
On September 30th many people across Klanata Turtle Island wear bright orange t-shirts to honour and raise awareness of the thousands of Indigenous children who were sent to residential and boarding schools.
Children were forced from their homes, endured horrific torture, subjected to deliberate suppression of their cultures and languages. Many never returned to their families.
On Orange Shirt Day, we also remember the Survivors of these institutions and the long-standing effects on generations of First Nations, Métis, Native Hawaiian and other Indigenous Pasifika, and Inuit and other Arctic Native Peoples.

“When Phyllis Webstad was a little girl, she was forced to attend a residential school in Williams Lake, British Columbia. On the first day of school, she proudly wore an orange shirt her grandmother had given her. The residential school staff stripped her of her belongings, cut her hair, and took away her clothes, including her orange shirt.” Phyllis is one of the thousands of children between the ages of four to 16 who attended residential schools in Canada between the 1830s and 1996.
The schools were operated by the Canadian government and church organizations with an aim to eliminate Indigenous languages, cultures, and practices. A deliberate act of colonialism and assimilation.

“We were children.” “Roman Catholic church in downtown Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. The graffiti was done on the same day Cowesses First Nation, announced the discovery of 751 unmarked graves from schools funded by the federal government and operated by the Roman Catholic Church.”
“The Dept. of the Interior’s Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative report, released 2024, confirmed at least 973 American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian and Indigenous Pasifika children died in schools run or supported by the federal government. From 1819–1969, across 417 schools in 37 states/territories.”
“The report also found at least 74 marked or unmarked burial sites at 65 of those schools, and states plainly the true death toll is almost certainly higher, since record-keeping then was inconsistent or deliberately absent.”
